The Cost of Deficient Roads
VTA General Manager & CEO Nuria Fernandez addresses a news conference at Eastridge Transit Center
Current roadway conditions are costing California motorists a total of $53.6 billion statewide annually, $2,471 per driver in the San Jose urban area, due to higher vehicle operating costs, traffic crashes and congestion-related delays, according to a report released by TRIP, a Washington, DC based national transportation organization. The report, California Transportation by the Numbers: Meeting the State’s Need for Safe, Smooth and Efficient Mobility, also finds that throughout California: 37 percent of major locally and state-maintained roads are in poor condition; one quarter of California’s bridges are structurally deficient or functionally obsolete; and more than 14,000 people were killed in crashes on California’s roads from 2010 to 2014. VTA Board of Directors and VTA Advisory Committee Members: I-280 Corridor Study Interactive Survey Now Live The new, just published interactive I-280 Corridor Study map and survey is your opportunity to help VTA prioritize future projects in Santa Clara County along this busy transportation corridor. http://i-280corridorstudy.crowdspotmap.com/#page/welcome We aren’t just looking for comments about improving the roadway, however. Are there pedestrian and bicycle improvements at overcrossings that can be made? Are there needed safety improvements, both on the freeways and at interchanges? How can transit be better integrated in the freeway corridor? Should interchanges be modified or rebuilt based on traffic levels? Do you favor extended carpool lanes, or express lanes on I-280? You can register your input by going to the survey site and clicking on the map at your point of concern and then providing comments. An added bonus is you can also read what others have said about that same area. In addition to the on-line survey, you can come out and talk directly to VTA planners at a pair of public meetings slated for late September; 6 p.m. September 22 at the Quinlan Center in Cupertino and 6 p.m. September 29 at San Jose City Hall. Thank you. Office of the Board Secretary Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority 3331 N. First Street San Jose, CA 95134 408.321.5680

August 19,2016 The Honorable Sylvia M. Burwell, Secretary U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 200 Independence Avenue, S.W. Washington, D.C. 20001 Dear Secretary Burwell, We write in support of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's (VTA) application for grant funding through the Administration for Community Living's Disability and Rehabilitation Research Projects (DRRP) Program. VTA plans to use the funding to demonstrate technologies and transit options that will offer disabled veterans a new level of independence and mobility. The VTA plans to use the DRRP grant funding to conduct a demonstration project that will test different technologies to improve access to transit for riders with disabilities, including through the use of mobile applications, smart bus stops, and on-demand transit services using autonomous vehicles. These new technologies will provide critical first- and last-mile connections for passengers with disabilities to VTA's core transit system. VTA plans to test the new technologies and services at the VA Palo Alto Medical Center which provides medical care to 67,000 veterans with a range of cognitive and physical disabilities. The funding will help VTA implement this service in phases over the course of the grant, first testing the technologies on the grounds of the VA, and later expanding to create connections to nearby transit and commuter rail servtces. The VTA has requested a $2.5 million grant and will provide a 25 percent local cost share for the project. The DRRP grant funding will help VTA provide important services to our constituents in Silicon Valley, including the thousands of disabled veterans who are served by the VA Palo Alto Medical Center. Thank you in advance for giving the VTA's grant application your highest consideration in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. Most gratefully,
/
