DesignWorks - CutWork Skillbuilder Creating Appliqué Letters The following exercise covers the basics of a CutWork Appliqué. For detailed CutWork Software instructions, review the DesignWorks manual. Go to Help> Help Topics. Click on the Index Tab and enter these topics in the search box: • Text • CutWork • Appliqué Double click on the listed topics to find out more information about the topic or select the topic and click on Display. Open the DesignWorks Software • Double click on the DesignWorks icon to open DesignWorks. • The Wizard will open. • Create New is selected; click Next. • In the Fabric dialog box, click Next. • In the Artwork Source dialog box, place a radio dot by New Graphic. • From the Hoop drop down selection, choose BERNINA Large Oval 255 x 145, #44C hoop. Click Finish. • If DesignWorks is already open: • Select File> New. The Wizard opens with the Fabric dialog box. • Work through the Wizard, following the same directions listed previously. Rotating the Hoop • Select the Manage Hoop Options icon. • Place a check mark by Rotate by 90º. • Click OK. Adding Text • Select Edit Text. Click on the screen and type in uppercase, CREATE. • While the text is highlighted, select Forte from the Font Name choices in Tool Options. • Select the Rectangle Selection icon.

Notes: Exercise includes: * Editing Text * Converting to CutWork * Creating Appliqué To complete this exercise, CutWork module must be activated in the DesignWorks Software. Each module is activated through the purchase and installation of access codes available from the local BERNINA Dealer. Instructions are written for full DesignWorks Software Suite installation. Refer to User’s Guide (Help > DesignWorks on -line Help) The Wizard will walk through the steps needed to begin creating the design. Adjustments are made to the stitch types for the design, according to the fabric selected. Choose color either for visibility on the design space or choose a color that most closely resembles the finished project media to preview Crystal/Thread/ Paint color options as they will appear on the final project.

By default, DesignWorks Suite selects Paint Fill. The software will remember the last font type that was used. If Tool Options dialog box is not visible, go to View> Toolbars. Make sure that Tool Options is checked. .

Sizing Text: • Select the Zoom In icon and drag a box around one of the corners of the selected lettering. • Rest your cursor on the corner until the double-arrow resizing handles appear and drag the lettering to the desired size. You may also resize the width and the height independently with the resizing handles on the respective sides of the lettering (located in the middle of the selection box). • In Tool Options, make sure Proportional is not checked. • Change the Width to 195 mm; the Height to 65 mm. • Select the Manage Hoop Options icon. • Place a check mark in front of Center Design to Hoop. • Click OK.

Notes: You can change the Font Size in Tool Options while the text is highlighted or you can change the size visually on the screen.

Adding/ Changing Color • With the lettering selected, click in the upper left corner of the black color chip in the Brushes Palette. This changes the outline color to black. • Use the scroll arrow to the right of the Brushes Palette to find additional colors. Click on the lower right corner of a pink color chip to change the fill color to pink. Creating the Cut File • While the lettering is still selected, in Object Properties, click on the Outline Tab. • Select the CutWork icon. • Place a check mark in front of Running Before and change the Offset to 1 mm. • Switch to the Fill Tab and select None in Object Properties.

Notice that there are no colors in the Brushes Palette now, but there is an Outline Color in the Threads Palette.

Previewing & Saving the File • Click on Slow Redraw to watch the design stitch. Select Start to begin. Click on the X in the upper right corner to close the dialog box. • Select File> Save As and navigate to the location to save the file. Name the file, Cutwork Letters and save the file. Click on Export to export the file to your machine. Select the appropriate icon for your compatible machine. • Note: If you wish to move the CutWork letters within the

hoop, you can select the Edit Shapes Nodes icon. Click on the node at the bottom of each letter to move them to fit within the hoop. Make a copy of the lettering before you move the letters so you can easily create the appliqué file from the pasted letters. © 2013 BERNINA of America, Inc

Appliqué Stitch Type • Return to the Outline Tab in Object Properties. • While the letters are still selected, click on Running in Object Properties. • Select the Appliqué Stitch. • Place a check mark in front of Length. • Change the length of the stitch to 2.5 mm. • Select Enter to activate the changes.

Notes: To see the icons in Object Properties, you must have something selected.

Changing the length of the appliqué stitch in Object Properties will also change the width.

Create Appliqué • Click on the Fill Tab. • Click on Appliqué. • Place a check mark in front of Cleaning. • From the Cleaning drop down menu, choose Laser Cut for the type. • Navigate to the location to save the file. • File> Save As, name the file, Appliqué Letters. • Export to the machine of your choice.
