DEMOGRAPHY Southern Adelaide provides a home for approximately one fifth of the people of South Australia. Demographically, the Region can be sub-divided into 15 Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) for which considerable data are available in relation to a wide variety of indicators of health and wellbeing (listed in Appendix 2). Generally, data are not available to describe the health and wellbeing of South Australians at a level smaller than an SLA. A statistical map of the Region is shown below (Map 1): Map 1
Source: SA Dept of Health CSmart database – 2001 Census data
The estimated usual resident population of the combined SLAs in the Region at the 2001 census was 3163729.
9
Note data provided for SLAs by CSmart does not always tally with data from the same source for the whole Region. District totals from the 2001 census data used in this document are generally constructed by aggregating the relevant SLA totals in each District.

Districts within the Region In order to facilitate ease of understanding and a practical approach to population health planning, for the purposes of this Population Profile, the Region has been sub-divided into three Districts that share similar social demography and physical geography. Each of these Districts is a combination of SLAs as follows: •
Urban Beaches District (Map 2): six SLAs covering the plains suburbs to the north and west of the Region with an estimated collective population in 2001 of 131058 persons (41.4% of the Region)
Map 2
•
Hills District (Map 3): four SLAs predominantly covering the woods and hills suburbs to the east of the Region with an estimated collective population in 2001 of 73613 persons (23.3% of the Region)
Map 3

•
Outer Southern District (Map 4): five SLAs in the southern plains suburbs from O’Halloran Hill south to Sellicks Beach with an estimated collective population in 2001 of 111701 persons (35.3% of the Region).

Population In 2001 there were 316372 persons usually living in the Region10. In general, taken as a whole, the population of Southern Adelaide reflects the diversity of people living across South Australia and closely follows the age profile of the State with a slightly higher proportion of “baby boomers” and their children (Figure 1). Births The Fertility rate for Southern Adelaide is similar to that of the metropolitan area overall. However, rates vary substantially with greater rates in the Outer Southern District and the SLAs of Marion South and Onkaparinga Reservoir compared to the Region as a whole (Table 3) reflecting the younger age profile of these areas compared to the rest of the Region. The greatest number of births in the Southern Region is in the Urban Beaches and Outer Southern Districts with particularly high numbers in the SLAs of Marion Central and Onkaparinga Woodcroft being the largest two SLAs in the Region in overall population. Household Income In 2001, the vast majority of households in every SLA of the Region had incomes between $200 and $2000 per week. The small group of households with a very low stated income is very diverse with this group including retirees with substantial assets, households whose finances are arranged such that their stated income does not reflect their standard of living, students living away from home but who may benefit substantially from family support and some pensioners receiving non-financial support from others. Most of those in the Southern Region were non-family households. In 2001, households with incomes above $2000 per week were also relatively rare in the Southern Region (less than 7000 in total) and were largely family households. Throughout the Region, the distribution of household income varies depending on family type and location. For family households, those in the Urban Beaches and Hills Districts were most likely to be in the highest income band whereas those in the Outer Southern District are most likely to be in the middle band (Figure 11). However for non family households, those in the Urban Beaches and Outer Southern Districts were most likely to be in the lowest income band whereas those in the Hills District were most likely to be in the middle band. In 2001, weekly income varied by family type with nearly 70% of couple families with children receiving between $500 and $1999 whereas only 47% of one parent families received this amount (Table 9). Conversely, about 39% of one parent families received between$200 and $499 compared with only about 5% of couple families with children receiving this amount. The weekly income of couple families without children was fairly evenly spread between $200 and $1999. 16
