10 Most Controversial Bollywood Movies Ever Celebrities Remember, there is no such thing as a 'bad controversy'. A controversy only adds up spice to a story and makes it famous. What better place to dig out some controversies than Bollywood? From the actors, directors, producers and singers, nobody has been able to keep off controversies.  Sometimes, I don't really understand how the so-called censor board works with Bollywood movies. Movies like Bandit Queen, Kamasutra - A tale of love (Kamasutra, the book, was given to the world by India), Black Friday and a lot more quality movies have been banned by the censor board but then again, I'm going to talk about some of the most controversial Bollywood movies today that no one knows, why and how were not banned.   This system confuses me utterly and oh! the pain of being a Bollywood fanatic is real. 1. The most controversial movie ever, 'Satyam Shivam Sundaram'!

Satyam Shivam Sundaram is one amongst the most controversial movies of Bollywood. The movie was released in 1978 and was banned for some time because of the most controversial adult scene between Zeenat Aman and Shashi Kapoor. The provocative scene was highlighted, but the movie stood out as more than an erotic myth, soon becoming an evergreen hit. 

2. The biopic of 'Phoolan Devi'

Bandit Queen is a movie based on true story of 'Phoolan Devi' and the brutal reality of the Indian hinterland. The movie was in controversy due to 'Seema Biswas', the lead actor as Phoolan, being paraded naked, the rape scenes and the highly abusive language. 

3. First ever Indian movie on homosexuality.

The movie 'Fire', caught a lot of attention worldwide with many appreciations and awards, but it was also highly criticized and faced a lot of controversy in India as it was the first movie based on female homosexuality. 

4. Water

This movie is the third and final part of Deepa Mehta's Elements Trilogy, the first two being 'Fire' and 'Earth', covering the controversial subjects like misogyny and ostracism. 

5. Messenger of God

The movie was in controversy even before it was released as it was starring Dera Sacha Sauda sect chief head, Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh who 'tried' to portray himself as God. The movie was banned as the chief appeared in an attire similar to that of Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh guru, and would hurt religious sentiments of the Sikh community. 

6. Murder

It is as erotic thriller movie starring Emraan Hashmi and Mallika Sherawat in the lead roles. This movie was in controversy because of the bold scenes between the two actors and also as it was the remake of a Hollywood movie, Unfaithful.

7. A movie which needs no introduction.

Kamasutra: A Tale of Love, The film is based on Vātsyāyana's Kamasutra, an ancient Indian text in Sanskrit literature about human sexuality and was banned due to the bold, erotic scenes and content. 

8. Julie

This movie was released in 1975 and grabbed a lot of attention as it highlighted the issues of inter-caste marriage and premarital pregnancy. 

9. Siddharta

It is an American movie based on the novel, by Hermann Hesse. It was in a lot of controversies because of Simi Garewal's nude scenes which were shot in the holy city of Rishikesh. 

10. Insaaf Ka Tarazu

It was a blockbuster movie of its times but it stirred a lot of controversies as it showed a 13-year-old getting brutally raped on screen.
