Program Implications:

 This lesson teaches important skills and identifies crucial resources that 9th graders will need to access in order to be successful in promoting to 10th grade at the end of the year and maintain continued success throughout high school. As this year is the foundation for the rest of their high school career, it important for students to establish good school-related behaviors early in the process. The data indicate that students can recognize good study habits and time/task management skills. We did not collect data, however, on students’ actual behaviors. The classroom environment is not conducive to assessing such practice. Counselor individual and small group sessions, however, allow for the assessment and encouragement of good study habit and time/task management skill practice.  While the lesson conveys crucial information to students about good habits and information specific to resources at Battlefield, counselors have discussed the large quantity of information in this lesson and the challenges of having limited time to convey it to students in the classroom. We are proposing to administration the creation of a “Freshman Academy” on PSAT day next year so that we may have extended time to delve more deeply into these and other topics with 9 th graders.  One aspect of this lesson that directly relates to the counseling department’s closing-the-gap goal is discussion of PreAP and AP class opportunities and the benefits of those courses. This discussion is a jumping off point for further student/counselor exploration of challenging and rigorous courses that students may take.
