TERRIERS IN THE OLYMPICS

@BUwhockey

From L to R: Jenn Wakefield, Marie-Philip Poulin, Catherine Ward, Tara Watchorn

Boston University now has a new “Olympic Four” after a quartet of Terriers claimed gold at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. As in 1980, the victory came in dramatic fashion, though in the case of MariePhilip Poulin, Jenn Wakefield, Catherine Ward and Tara Watchorn, the drama came in the gold-medal game rather than in the semifinals. With Canada trailing the United States, 2-1, late in the third period, Poulin tied the game with just 54.6 seconds left. She then became her country’s Olympic hockey hero for the second time when she potted the game-winner in overtime.

The Sochi gold medalists were honored at Agganis Arena during a men’s ice hockey game in February 2015, a year removed from their Olympic victory. Catherine Ward, Tara Watchorn and Marie-Philip Poulin were able to attend the ceremony.

Poulin emerged onto the international scene in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, where she scored both goals in a 2-0 win over the United States to win gold with teammate Catherine Ward. The duo then played together at BU the following season before teaming up again in Sochi for their second gold medal.
