ASA tourney cut short due to heavy rains Sunday morning Nearly 1200 archers were in town for the Illinois Pro/ Am Championships on Friday through Sunday; however, due to heavy rains that hit the area Sunday morning, the competition was suspended and awards were given out at 10 a.m. from the tallies of Friday and Saturday score sheets. Organizers felt attendance was down some from last year, due to the campground being closed following historic flooding earlier this spring at Fort Massac State Park. On a brighter note, 281 shooters participated in the annual Superman Classic, competing for $15,000 in prize money. “We had record attendance on the first day of the threeday Classic, which is great news for our tourism efforts,” said Angie Shelton, Metropolis Tourism director.

Overall winners in each class for the Superman Classic are: • Bow Novice: Alan Kuhnert of Taylorville, score 624 • Hunter: Andy Horton of Depew, Okla., score 599 • Men’s Known Distance: Sam Wolthuis of Mountain Grove, Mo., score 659 • Men’s Pro: Joseph Goza of Henagar, Ala., score 624 • Semi Pro: Darin Deneal of Thompsonville, score 581 • Men’s Unlimited: Royce Wilson of Glenpool, Okla., score 514 • Men’s Open A: Michael Fryfugle of Lucedale, Miss., score 625 • Men’s Open B: Cody Bryant of Mountain City, Tenn., score 606 • Men’s Open C: Ronnie McDonald of Blairsville, Ga., score 595 • Senior Master: Phil Jacobs of Bedford, Ind., score 578

The

MCHS softball players Kaylee Childers and Shianne Guice were recognized June 19 for outstanding seasons. The teens were both named to the Southern Illinois Coaches Association All South Team, and Childers was also named to the Illinois Coaches Association All State third team. In two years of high school ball, Childers has amassed some impressive statistics. As a pitcher she has put together a 31-17 record on the heels of a 12-6 season this past spring. Childers has rung up an impressive 304 strikeouts in two years. This spring she struck out 121 batters in 104 innings and walked just 20. Childers has also flashed some serious leather, maintaining a .949 fielding percentage. Childers finished with a .413 batting average, led the team in hits with 31, led the team in runs scored with 27, stole nine bases [17 of 18 for her career] and struck out just eight times this past season. Guice, a senior, capped off a solid high school career with a sparkling senior season. She earned co-offensive MVP for the spring and earned the most improved player award for 2011. She hit a sizzling .404 and led the team with four home runs. She scored 15 runs, led the team with 19 RBI on the strength of 23 hits and stole four bases. Guice indeed saved her best for last as she was one of the offensive keys in Massac’s last two weeks of play. For the last two weeks or so of the season, she hit over .600, hit three of her four home runs and led the Lady Pats to their first regional victory in probably 10 years. Childers joined teammates Courtney Copley and Madison Stephens on the SIRR Ohio Division All Conference team while Guice received honorable mention for all conference.
