The Miracle League and Union Football, a Tradition of Service by Carina Sorrentino, The Concordiensis On Saturday, September 20, members of the Union Football team ventured to East Greenbush for their annual day of volunteer service with The Miracle League. The Miracle League was founded in 1999 as a response to the overwhelming number of disabled children in Atlanta, GA who had never received the opportunity to participate in sports. It now has over 250 locations nationwide. The program gives children with a variety of disabilities, including those in wheelchairs or with walkers, the chance to play sports like baseball to football in a safe and friendly environment. The Miracle League in East Greenbush is only a short 30 minutes away from Union. Saturday morning's visit was conducted by Union Football Head Coach John Audino and 11 football players. While only there for a few hours, it was clear that even beyond the gates of Union, these athletes maintain an interest in enriching the community. The young men played flag football with a variety of people with disabilities, from 10-year-olds to those in their early twenties. This is something that the team does every year, and Tyler Valenti '16 served as a liaison to the organization this year, encouraging his teammates to get involved. "When you think about the cause, then you see the kids show up and enjoy themselves, it just turns into a lot of fun for everyone," Valenti stated. "Everyone who goes is great with the kids who are there to play, and it's really amazing for us and them." Similarly, in the winter and spring, the team hosts an ongoing mentoring program with fourth- and fifth-grade boys at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. Each Union player is paired up with a child for the term and spends about 30 minutes helping the children with their homework. The next 30 minutes or so are spent playing football and working on the children's athletic skills.

Miracle League (continued) Both programs represent a commitment that it is often difficult to make for any athlete. With rigorous schedules for practices, lifting, games and academics, spare time is not taken for granted. While it may be hard to dedicate time to anything outside of the sport and schoolwork, Valenti says that these programs are more than worth it. "We're a small Division III school, but it's always fun to see, with this and with the mentoring program, how excited the community is about what we do. The kids at The Miracle League had us signing programs for them, and that is just really something for us," he stated. The players who volunteer do so wholeheartedly, and usually after participating once, they will be found there the following year. Kyle Kalanta stated, "This is my first time being involved with the event, and my favorite part was in between the games when we got to meet the kids and interact with them a little more personally. It was great to see how they interacted with each other, and when we were off the field we could really get to know who they were as people, which was extremely rewarding." When questioned about the importance of making an effort outside of the demands of playing a sport, Valenti remarked that "it's just as important as anything you do on the field, because you don't realize how influential the program is until you're hanging out with kids who can name your stats and records while they ask you for autographs, and their parents are there looking at you in such a positive way. It's so important to give back for all of the support that you're getting." Later in the season, some of the kids from The Miracle League will be shuttled to Union to watch their favorite players in action, something that all of the players are looking forward to. Union students continually report that volunteer work is filled with a reciprocity of positivity and learning. The Miracle League and the Union football team will continue to foster a relationship over the next few years.

TODAY'S FEATURE - MEET DYLAN SCHUCK by Bob Weiner, Daily Gazette
Dylan Schuck used to be the hammer. Now, more often than not, he’s the nail. But the 6-foot, 210-pound senior fullback loves every minute of making key plays behind the scenes. Don’t be surprised to see Schuck in the middle of the Dutchmen’s offense when they host Springfield today at noon at Frank Bailey Field. Schuck, one of the team captains, wasn’t sure he would even be playing this season for the Union College football team after he tore his ACL and both meniscus just before the 2013 campaign. Schuck missed that entire season, but instead of handing in his cleats for good, he worked tirelessly to get his body ready for one final trip with the Garnet. “Right after the injury, I made up my mind that I was going to come back, no matter what it took,” said the graduate of J.F. Kennedy Catholic High School. “When something like that happens to you, it’s important to go 100 percent either way. Either I was going to give up football completely, or I was going to work as hard as I could to come back all the way. It was a lot of work, but I wanted to come back because I love the game. It’s such a fun sport, and I wanted to come back and be with all the guys one more time.” Schuck worked so hard in his comeback bid that he received the 2013 Trainer’s Award. “It was absolutely worth it to come back,” he said. Although Schuck has played tailback, fullback and even a little bit of tight end this season, he has come to love the position of fullback. “For me, the biggest difference between fullback and tailback is that at fullback, you’re looking for someone to hit. At running back or tailback, you’re looking for someone to avoid. As a fullback, you’ve got to clear out the way for the tailback to run through. It’s all about having a certain kind of mentality,” he said. Earlier in his career, Schuck’s specialty was as a goal-line runner. In 2012, he ran twice for 49 yards and scored a touchdown against the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. He then scored two touchdowns and ran for 16 yards on nine carries against the Springfield Pride, and he had another strong effort with 43 yards on five carries against St. Lawrence. “Although I ran the ball a little more when I played tailback, I really do love being a fullback,” said Schuck. “Blocking is a lot of fun. Often, I have to block a much bigger player, whether it’s on a blitz or trying to protect the quarterback by going after the defensive end. Again, it’s all about having the right kind of mentality. When I was a goal-line runner, I had the tough mentality to be that physical. Now, I have the mentality of being a versatile fullback who will do whatever it takes to win, whether it means blocking, catching the ball or running it.”
"(Dylan) brings a tremendous work ethic. He's so versatile. I've used him at fullback, tailback and even tight end. He can do it all." Head Coach John Audino
Dylan has played three positions for the Dutchmen. Schuck said about the only reminders of his serious knee injuries are the scars and the knee brace that he must wear. “The knee feels great, but when I’m playing fullback, I’ve got to use the brace, just in case someone rolls over it,” he said. Union head coach John Audino believes in Schuck. “He brings a tremendous work ethic, so I’m not surprised that he has come all the way back from that injury,” Audino said. “It’s pretty amazing, because Dylan even threw the javelin for the track team when he first came back. He’s so versatile. I’ve used him at fullback, tailback and even tight end against St. Lawrence last week. He can do it all.” Audino says Schuck’s versatility is special. “He blocks well, he catches well, and he knows how to get the tough yards inside,” Audino said. “He knows the game very well, and I’m so happy that he came back for one more year. He’s a very valuable player for us. “Against St. Lawrence, he made one key block that wiped out two defenders at once, and then he made another block later in the game that helped us score.” Schuck had numerous options when he graduated from high school, but he said a visit from the Union coaching staff convinced him Schenectady was the right place to spend his collegiate career. “I have no regrets,” he said. “The Union program has been great to me.” Schuck’s numbers don’t jump off the page this year, but he’s not playing to pile up stats. He’s carried the ball just seven times for 15 yards and has one catch for nine yards. More important are his leadership abilities and his excellent blocking technique. He’s all about team. Schuck also hopes to make major contributions after he graduates. The environmental science major hopes to help clean up the environment and sees numerous career opportunities in that field. He says the education he received at Union was just as special as his opportunities with the football program.
