will offer an outstanding public education to a socioeconomically, culturally and racially diverse community of students in a dual language immersion setting. We will offer at least one language track—Spanish. In kindergarten and first grade 90% of the day will be in the target language (Spanish) and the remaining 10% will be taught in English. As students matriculate, English will increase as the language of instruction by 10% every year, so that by 5th grade the instruction will be in 50% English/50% target language. The school will open with Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grades. We will add a grade each year. Our educational philosophy is progressive, hands-on and experience-based so that children will be encouraged to

students will become critical thinkers, problem solvers and will have a greater connection to those in their community and around the world. In a supportive and dynamic learning environment, our students will be given individual attention where they will learn together and from each other in an inquiry-based curriculum that fosters creativity and academic excellence. With the participation of our local community and Spanish-speaking countries around the world, we will strive to develop every child’s confidence, potential and individual responsibility as global citizens.
Why? Why immersion? Research shows being bilingual makes you smarter! It can have a profound effect on your brain, improving cognitive skills and the brain’s so-called executive functions — such as planning, problem-solving, critical thinking, perspective-taking and even empathy. A dual language immersion program is designed to educate BOTH native English speakers and English language learners within the same classroom, and fulfill for both groups the goals of full bilingualism and bi-literacy, grade-level achievement, and multicultural competency. Studies show that an early start, two way bilingual immersion program is the ONLY program that successfully and completely closes the learning and academic achievement gap between ESL (English as a Second Language) and EL native speakers. Studies also show that in all subjects including English, these students perform on par with, or often BETTER than native English speakers receiving English only instruction.
is one of the most architecturally diverse in the country and contains the highest concentration of historic cultural monuments in Los Angeles. City leaders and Hollywood stars of the silent era built homes here and the area was also a favorite among black celebrities in the 1940s and 1950s; notable residents included Hattie McDaniel, Joe Louis, Little Richard and Ray Charles.
Why Spanish? Spanish is the official language of over 20 countries including Spain and almost every country in South America and it is estimated that there are 400 million people who speak Spanish as their native language. Here in Los Angeles, Spanish is a dominant language and West Adams has a very large Latino population, which makes it an ideal location for a dual-language immersion school. Lastly, it is important for the first and second-generation Latino families in Los Angeles to maintain a connection with their non-English speaking family and with their heritage. Our dual-language immersion and culturally
Per the 2000 Census and 2008 LA Dept. of City Planning Estimates, the population of the West Adams neighborhoods is approximately 147,329 and is about 63.5% Latino, 17.6% Black, 9.6% Asian, 7.4% White, 1.9% Other and the median income is $28, 000. West Adams is one of the most economically and racially diverse and densely populated areas in all of Los Angeles.
