Location The town of Atherton is located in the Wigan Metropolitan Borough of Greater Manchester County and lies approximately 11 miles northwest of Manchester, immediately north of Leigh and five miles east of Wigan. Road communications to Atherton are provided by means of the A577 and A579 routes, which provide access to Leigh, and the A6 route respectively. Junctions 4 and 5 of the M61 motorway are within three miles and hence the town has good connections to the national motorway system. The town has a rail station on the Manchester to Wigan route. Atherton has a population in the order of 20,000 persons and originally developed as a coal mining town. This use has now disappeared and today the town provides service industries. Bolton Road is the A579 route and carries considerable levels of traffic.
