Strategies to create behavioural change on energy Philip Sellwood, Chief Executive Energy Saving Trust

The challenge in the UK • We need to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80% by 2050. • UK target of 15% of renewables by 2020.

What is the Energy Saving Trust’s aim? • To cut carbon dioxide emissions by giving people advice on saving energy, domestic renewables, sustainable transport, waste reduction, and water conservation.

Ways of increasing microgeneration uptake • Fiscal incentives – such as an annual reduction in council tax after installation. • Feed-in tariffs. • Encouraging community-based renewables. • Obligating energy suppliers to subsidise renewables. • Rolling out smart meters nationwide.

Changing behaviour • Focusing on the entire suite of ‘green’ issues facing the consumer. • Making the low carbon option the only option. • Providing advice and information that is specific and personally relevant. • Maintaining a consistent message on ‘green’ issues.

What sort of savings could we achieve by 2050?

Tackle private rental sector 3 MtCO2

Energy efficient products 4 MtCO2

Low emission cars 20 MtCO2

Water metering 1.75 MtCO2
