Simon writes......13th November 2016 So, we now know that Donald Trump will be the 45th President of the USA. I know that many are still digesting this and trying to understand what it says to us as Christ-followers. It seems to be part of a wider populist-nationalist movement within political debate in a number of countries around the world...eg The Philippines, Hungary, Poland & described as ‘The American Brexit’. Of course, many will place their hopes in him delivering for them but ‘even the president of the United States sometimes must have to stand naked’ Bob Dylan – It’s Alright Ma (I’m Only Bleeding). Like all of us, Mr Trump is only human and he will have his work cut out to deliver on his promises to restore prosperity to those who feel the full weight of the economic downturn. (As an aside, I read today that the company that runs the Golden Globes has been bought by China’s richest man, Wang Jianlin. Economically, the Chinese are indeed coming and investing in the west!) As we gather for worship at this time of Remembrance – it is 100 years since the 141 day Battle of the Somme, in which over ONE MILLION men were wounded or killed – we should follow the request of St Paul to encourage our leaders in their pursuit of peace, harmony & reconciliation. Writing to his young colleague Timothy, he says......I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. TimothyService 2:1-2. 6th November. Next1Evening President-elect Trump, the people of the USA & the victims of war all need our prayers.
