(Saturday, Oct. 7 2017) – Mercer head football coach Bobby Lamb and linebacker Lee Bennett provided comments following the Bears’ 24-14 win at No. 17 The Citadel on Saturday at Johnson Hagood Stadium. Head Coach Bobby Lamb Opening comments… “I can’t say enough about our guys for holding on and earning that road victory we needed. We went 1-0 today and that’s what matters. I think we outplayed them in the running game…[The Citadel] had more passing yards than we did. We couldn’t get the ball over their heads, but we finally got our running game where it needed to be by the third quarter. On difficulties passing the ball… “We had a couple opportunities on deep balls that we just couldn’t connect. The Citadel probably blitzed way more today than the tendencies show, and that gave us some trouble. You can’t say enough though…we had fourth [down] and three inches [to go] on our own 25…the offense was begging me to go for it but I just couldn’t do it. Our defense was playing great, so you always kick in that scenario.” On the defense’s performance… “I can’t say enough about our defense. They were flying all around, in and out. It starts up front. I saw Dorian [Kithcart] in there a lot and obviously Isaiah [Buehler] was in there too. We knocked six balls loose – I mean we knocked them loose – and ended up with four turnovers. We were really getting after it. I was really proud of the way they played. “When you come [to The Citadel], you have to hold your breath until the end because it is always a battle.” On Lee Bennett’s performance… “I’ll tell you, he’s sideline to sideline. Several times The Citadel had a big-time play and he came through with a stop. That’s the kind of effort our defense gives. I can’t say enough about Coach [Mike] Kolakowski and our defensive staff; they continue to impress me every day.” On the impact of the heat during Saturday’s game… “I’m standing in the shade with the sun behind the clouds right now and it is the coolest I’ve been all game. I’ve been hot a lot in Macon, Georgia, but it was extremely hot and humid today. I was worried

about our players, but for the most part we made it through. It shows what kind of condition our guys are in.” On what it takes to earn a win in Charleston [at The Citadel]… “Toughness is what it takes to win here. At the end of the day, the toughest team is going to win. I can’t say enough about our guys. The great thing is seeing how happy those guys are in our locker room right now…it makes me emotional. They worked so hard to get to this point, so hard. We’ve got to continue it. We finally slayed that fourth-quarter dragon and we can move forward. In the fourth quarter, I got kind of crazy like I usually do, and our coaching staff was in my head set shouting, ‘P.M.A.’…Positive Mental Attitude. We talked about it in our team meeting last night and this morning. Sometimes everyone else needs to settle the head coach down. “Great day to be a Bear!” Lee Bennett, LB On the win over No. 17 The Citadel… “We took it one play at a time today, trusted in ourselves and it paid off. Hard work pays off. We felt like we could take advantage of some weaknesses we thought [The Citadel] had and that plan came through. “This is unbelievable to be a part of. You guys see it…we work hard every day in practice and preach toughness. Every play we bring that toughness and do our job.” Follow the Bears For complete coverage of Mercer Football, please follow the Bears on social media at @MercerFootball (Twitter), /MercerFootball (Facebook) and @MercerFootball (Instagram) or visit the official home of Mercer Athletics at MercerBears.com. -###-
