Cremant Rosé
sArAH’s seLeCtIoN
As we’ve seen over the last few weeks, springtime in Colorado is really just a combination of winter days and summer days. In a similar way, rosé wines are basically a combination of red wine and white wine characteristics. Whispering Angel carries its red wine fruit tones—melon, wild strawberry and rose petals— on a white wine framework of oyster shell mineral and a zesty, sauvignon blanc-like grapefruit acidity through the finish. This unique combination of red and white wine character makes rosés incredibly versatile and undeniably delicious. There’s something for everyone to like. With few exceptions they are meant to be festive, to be quaffed more than analyzed. That’s not to say there isn’t a lot going on in this wine: it is well made, and beautifully balanced. One would expect no less from Sacha Lichine, the owner of Caves D’Esclans. The Lichine name looms large in the modern history of French wine, and he’s done his family proud with this effort. There is plenty here to please the critic, but a good rosé is at its best when served with friends and Reg. $23.99 laughter.

Over the next few weeks our rosé section will reach its peak with all of the new 2015s coming in. There are some old favorites that we bring in year after year, as well as some new discoveries. As the weather (hopefully) starts warming up soon, rosé season will be in full swing. Chateau Moncontour Cremant Rosé is a rosé we have year round, year after year, and for good reason; it is the perfect sparkling rosé for any time. I was drinking it over the weekend and watching the snow pile up, but chances are good I will grab a couple more bottles to enjoy while basking in the sunshine in the coming months. Chateau Moncontour is one of the oldest estates in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley in France, and they make this sparkling wine using the same age old method as Champagne production. This wine is 90% Cabernet Franc and 10% Chenin Blanc, and it displays the beautiful texture from the Chenin Blanc with the pronounced herbacious notes from the Cab Franc. Lean and crisp with notes of under ripe strawberries and watermelon with dried herbal tones, this is a delicious bottle of pink bubbles. Why not mix it up and the next time you reach for a rosé, try some sparkling rosé! Reg. $15.99 Cheers!

I have been waiting for almost a month to tell you about this amazing, difficult to find rosé from Spain! I wanted to wait until the unpredictable spring snow storms stopped and we finally get our warm days back later this week. We can get our hands on some very diverse styles of Spanish wines here in the Denver market, and while most wine drinkers have at least heard of Rioja and the white called Albarino, only the truly geeked out wine seekers have heard of or tasted wines of the smaller appellations of Spain. The truth is, there are some very fun styles that few people outside of their regions of production have ever consumed – even in neighboring Spanish regions. Txakoli and its even harder to find rosé sibling from Spain’s separatist Basque region, are great examples. Centered around the town of Getaria, the Hondarribbi Zuri and Hondarribbi Beltza vineyards stretch almost all the way to the shores of the Atlantic. Humid, wet, and cool weather create the citrusy and freshly acidic and saline style of this wine. The Ameztoi Rubentis rosé combines red berry fruit and floral notes with mouthwatering fresh acidity and palate tickling residual carbonation. Throughout the warm months, wines like this are consumed by the tankful at Spanish tapas bars, thanks to their versatility and refreshing style. In your backyard, it is the perfect gateway to your backyard cookouts or to go with your main dishes of shrimp, fish, or any other seafood. Get Reg. $22.99 this while you can!
