Christi Farley at the University of South Carolina October 2017 Highlights
Fall Retreat. It happens every year around this time. This was my 11th Fall Retreat, 3 as a student and 8 as Cru staff. Sometimes I wonder if I’m getting too old for them, but then the students play bubble soccer (pictured right), where they dawn giant inflated plastic bubbles and run into each other and I laugh until I cry and I think, “I still got some Fall Retreats left in me.”
Our Fall Retreat speaker, Pastor Richard Smith, shared about some of the crucial moments in the lives of Abraham, Joseph and Moses, times that defined their walks with God and their lives. He brought the gospel home clearly. Please pray specifically for the Muslim student who came with me to Fall Retreat and heard over and over why Jesus is the only way.
As I’m getting to know all of our new students this year, I’m excited to find that some of them have become believers since getting involved in Cru in August! They were in a Bible study or sitting across from a Cru leader or heard something from a speaker, and they placed their faith in Christ. And then sometimes I’m talking to a girl who comes around and knows all the right things to say, and realize I don’t think she is a believer. Pray the Holy Spirit would come and convict students of sin and righteousness and bring glory to God. (John 16:7-15). Last week I sat on USC’s horseshoe with two freshman girls, and as we shared our stories, I was saddened to hear that both of them struggle with eating disorders. These beautiful girls made in God’s image have damaged their bodies and spirits pursuing unhealthy appearance standards. I was relieved that one of them has pursued help, and is seeing a dietician, doctor, and therapist, along with the help of her mom, to pursue healing. She teared up when I looked her in the eye and told her I thought she was beautiful right now, just the way she is. Pray that my times with these girls would point them away from worldly standards, and to Jesus, who is better. 2535 Treeside Drive, Columbia, SC 29204 ● (304) 716-6684 ● give.cru.org/0589303 ●
