GEORGE TOMLINSON NEWS Dear Parents and Carers, It’s been another busy week at George Tomlinson! This week has been anti-bullying week and we decided to focus on cyberbullying and social media. The week has been a great success and kicked off with parent workshops, assemblies and workshops for children on the theme and finished with a clever and very funny assembly from 6 AC. The new school council members met for the first time on Friday and will continue the discussion on anti-bullying with their class and feedback to us with their thoughts and ideas on the topic and how we can move the school forward with this. We are all determined to ensure the school is a safe and happy place. A big thank you to Miss Porter and Miss Chambers for the hard work they put into organising the week. I have seen some fantastic learning around the school this week. Children in Year 3 have been learning about healthy eating. They enjoyed making healthy wraps for Miss Carter and Dr Laban and advised them to stop eating unhealthy food such as chocolate! Children in Reception have been also been learning about healthy eating and have been writing their own information book. Please remember chocolate and sweets are not allowed in school or in packed lunches. We have started to launch a new approach to reading called ‘Destination Reader’. The first part of the launch requires the children to adopt ‘Learning Behaviours’ that help us work and learn successfully together. This has got off to a flying start especially in Year 5 and 4, where children are showing how well they Support and Actively Listen to Each Other and this week they have been focussing on how to Discuss and Explain Ideas. Whole school attendance was 94% this week. Our target is 96%. Please come to school every day and not miss out on any learning. It is so important and every day counts. We will be putting our new attendance policy on our website for you to read today. Thank you so much to all the children and parents who have been coming up to me and introducing themselves. I’ve been made to feel so welcome at George Tomlinson and I am very happy to be here with you all.

Class Cor ner – 2AK In 2AK this week we have been discovering lots of new and exciting things. In Maths we have been learning all about measurement, measuring our height and weight and looking at the different units of measurement. All the children were very excited to find out who was the tallest in the class! 2AK have continued to work hard in their Read Write Inc classes and have shown great progress in reading and writing. We have been visiting the Science garden and exploring the different living things that live there. It has been interesting to look at the plants and animals both dead and alive that live in the science garden. Everyone was excited to find lots of different minibeasts. In Topic we have continued to look at Water and have discovered the names of oceans and continents. 2AK continue to ask interesting questions about the world around them and actively engage in their learning. Year Two were able to take part in the Beauty and the Beast pantomime workshop and performance and all the chosen helpers did a fantastic job! This week we have been focusing on Anti-bullying and all the children have been extra kind and caring making sure there is no bullying, especially in the playground. Our Playground buddies have continued to show kindness and play with anyone who might need a friend. With everyone working so hard it’s sure to be a great term!

Not ices Tea with the Head Teacher Congratulations to these children who were invited to have tea with the Head Teacher today for exceptional behaviour. Well done!!
Parents Evening Parents Evening will take place on Thursday 24 th November from 2pm – 7:30pm. There will be a 30min break for Teachers between 4:30pm – 5pm.
Please note that the school day will end at 2pm Nursery As you aware, there will be an EYFS parents’ evening on Thursday, 24th November 2016 from 2pm to 7.30pm. This will be an opportunity for you to discuss your child’s progress with your teacher or in the case of Nursery, your child’s keyworker. Please ensure that you have completed your appointment request via the on-line booking system. IMPORTANT: Due to the timings of the appointments, please be advised that the Nursery pm session will not be available. There will be an opportunity for you to look through your children’s work prior to your scheduled appointment. For Nursery pupils, parents will be able to look through their special books and discuss their learning progress and how well they have been settling in. For Reception parents, your child’s Phonics, Literacy and Mathematics books will be made available. Additionally, Reception teachers will provide an opportunity for you to see further evidence of your child’s learning via Target Tracker. Target Tracker is an on-line learning journey and assessment tool which is now running across the school to track children’s progress and provide next steps for their learning. Please be reminded that each appointment is for 10 minutes. Should you wish to discuss any issues which you consider need more time, please arrange a further meeting with the teacher or keyworker to ensure each appointment does not overrun. They will be happy to provide you with their school email to arrange this. Kind regards Mrs Rachael Clements Interim Head of EYFS

Come and join us in the school hall and help us spread some festive cheer. There will be games, crafts for the children to make, festive drinks, a cake sale and Santa’s Grotto. See you there! We’ve had a great show of volunteers already, but the more people we can get, the more money we can raise for our kids. So please get in touch if you can help out on the day or in advance:

Free money for the PTFA when you shop. No, really! Download one simple widget and companies will make no-strings attached donations to George Tom PTFA every time you shop at a wide range of websites like Argos, Amazon, EBay, Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, John Lewis, The Book People and many others. Last year I heard about this, and I even went as far as registering with easyfundraising.org.uk, but I was inherently suspicious about "free" money and it all seemed a bit too difficult. Having wasted a year's worth of donations, I've since discovered that there really is no catch – companies want to give to charity and it really doesn't cost you anything. And the process is really easy too. Over the last couple of years more than £1,000 has been given to the school from this scheme. And it's not just you who can do it: your family and friends can too so spread the word! And if you sign up before all your Christmas shopping – and Black Friday! – just think how much more we can raise! Here's how to get free money for the school: 1. Register at easyfundraising.org.uk and select George Tomlinson PTA. 2. Download the widget to your computer and/or the app to your phone. 3. When you're browsing participating websites, the option to "activate" will appear. If you click that and then go on to buy something, easyfundraising.org will automatically send money to George Tom PTFA. 4. Tell everyone you know to do the same! Thank you! Elly, PTFA Secretary

Sports
Our football girls team went up against all the best school teams in the Borough on Wednesday 16th November. The team continued their great form playing 4 matches and managing not to concede a goal throughout the day. Despite narrowly missing out on the finals due to goal difference the girls played outstandingly. Player of the match; Hannah :) Keep it up girls!!!
