support, and the opportunity to learn leadership skills that would serve them for a lifetime. Charles “Skip” Thompson, who joined the Alumni soon after its inception in 1948, worked with Gerry on numerous Club events for over 40 years. “He was a great guy who hustled all of the time,” Thompson said. “He was a good friend one of our best fundraisers. He was never bashful about getting the job done.” In 2015, the Club honored Gerry by naming the annual Club golf tournament after him. The citation reads: “In respect and honor of Gerard Miller this event and those that follow will be known as the Gerard Miller “Children First” Annual Golf tournament.”

Remembering Gerry Miller By Paul LeSage

Longtime Club Alumni member Gerry Miller was a lot of things to many people, a passionate family man, a public servant and officer in the Pittsfield Fire Department, a union activist, and for the Club he worked tirelessly to ensure that Club kids received training, coaching, and other

Chris Jacoby, a former Alumni member and now Club executive director said, Gerry started our biggest fundraiser of the year. It is only fitting that he be honored in this way.” Per Jacoby, the Miller family continues to be active in the planning of the golf event. “They are continuing a proud legacy,” Jacoby said.

1st annual James Mooney 3x3 Basketball Tournament Saturday, March 12, 11 a.m.

Mooney Tourney set for tip off By Paul LeSage In a fitting tribute to a great gentleman and longtime Club senior officer, the late Jim Mooney, the first annual Jim Moony 3 x 3 Alumni Basketball Tournament is set for Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m. at the main Club on Melville Street, co-organizers, Cameron Warren and Shannon McMahon, have announced. ”The tourney is an attempt to bring back old club members, build the Alumni ranks, and help raise some money for the Club,” Warren said. The idea, per Warren, came after he found old jerseys from his Club playing days, took photos of them, and sent them out via social media to former teammates and others. The response was really great, Warren said. “One thing led to the others, and now we have the tourney. I’m really looking forward to it and seeing who will be coming to play.”

Affiliation with National B&G Club a plus Over the last year, the Club’s close affiliation with the national organization has begun to really pay off. Club Executive Director Chris Jacoby said, “National has provided $26,000 in financial support, guidance on promoting activities, especially for underprivileged children, extensive guidelines on safety, templates for hiring personnel, and other very useful information. This is a big plus for our organization.” In addition, the club has received grants from Walmart, The 99 Restaurant, 4H, and others. “We’re also now fundraising for the purchase of a new Zamboni for the ice hockey rink, which will be in the neighborhood of $100,000,” Jacoby said.
