Old and New: Combining Traditional and Digital-Based Media to Art and Photography Classes, $2,500 Project Description: The purpose of this project is for the applicant to learn how to use and combine “old” or traditional media with “new” digital-based media at the high school level. This project will be a springboard and catalyst for students to create their own beautiful artworks that combine traditional media with digital technology. To Attend AP Summer Institute at St. Johnsbury Academy in Vermont, July 2017, $2,090 Project Description: AP Summer Institute in St. Johnsbury Academy is a preparatory class for those wishing to teach AP Studio Art in Drawing and Two-Three Dimensional Design. Participants will work toward a course outline for their own AP Program through simulated grading of sample portfolios, become familiar with grading standards and procedures. To attend the Georgia O’Keeffe Artist and Writer Immersion Workshop at Ghost Ranch in New Mexico, September 2017, $1,575 Project Description: To attend a Georgia O’Keeffe Artist and Writer Immersion Workshop at Ghost Ranch, led by professionals who will share expertise on the artists and land that she drew inspiration from, which will enhance the art curriculum enable the educator to design lessons centered around themes of the Southwest and O’Keefe’s artistic style. Callie Slider, Maumelle, Arkansas. To Attend TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) Institute Summer Course, July 2017, $1,335 Project Description: Grant to attend the TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) Summer Institute at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. this workshop provides training in the specifics of student choice-based pedagogy in art education while directly relating to the National Visual Arts Standards.

To Purchase Compasses, $500 Project Description: Students will be introduced to architectural structures from three different religions that incorporate geometry into their construction. The compasses will be used as students execute personal geometric designs inspired by the images they have been introduced to.

NAEF Research Grants Karen T. Keifer-Boyd, State College, Pennsylvania. Fostering Upstanders to Injustice through Art Encounters, $10,000 Project Description: How can art educators connect social justice education to their teaching and art curricula? This study is designed to motivate and prepare art educators to bridge social justice education with art teaching. A team of art curriculum scholars and practitioners, known as the C-Team, developed encounters with a series of artworks that comprise the Holocaust heroes: Fierce Females (H2F2) – Tapestries and sculpture by Linda Stein (2015). Our purpose is to foster critical consciousness for upstander action to challenge injustice, through experiential activities surrounding the study of art. This project entails research that considers the effectiveness of the H2F2 curricular encounters towards teaching social justice through art. Oksun Lee, Edmond, Oklahoma. The Status of Foreign-Born Art Education Faculty in U.S. Higher Education: Demographic Characteristics, Cross-Cultural Experiences, Challenges, and Contributions, $9,900 The proposed research examines the demographic status of foreign-born art education faculty and the nature of their cross-cultural experiences in U.S. higher education. Yiwen Wei, Richmond, Virginia. The Role Social Class Plays in the Cultures of Visual Art Classrooms, $10,000 Project Description: My research proposes to examine the similarities and differences between the cultures of two selected visual art classrooms with distinct aggregations of student socioeconomic status (SES) in the U.S. context. Using qualitative research methods, I will conduct ethnographic research on the cultures of these two art classrooms within public elementary schools located in contrasting higher and lower socioeconomic sectors in the same state.
