Dear Parent/Carer Exam Preparation As the GCSE examinations are now underway, we thought it timely to offer parents and carers some practical strategies and advice about how best to support your child during this very important time. Your child has his/her own examination table; it is important that you have discussed this with him/her, highlighting the start time, length and the venue of each examination. You should have also received a letter with the dates and times of blocked periods of study time for certain subjects, please talk to your child about this too. It is important that he/she takes advantage of these study support sessions, delivered by subject specialists to ensure that she is ready to do her best in the examinations. Being ’exam-ready’ means helping your child to maintain a healthy mind and a healthy body. It is very important that your child is eating healthily, keeping well hydrated and getting sufficient rest and sleep; this can be helped by making sure he/she is avoiding caffeine and food and drinks which are high in sugar. Moreover, exercise is a very good way of keeping oneself relaxed and your child should make sure he/she keeps active, even if this is just a short walk in the fresh air when he/she has time. This year, Ramadan falls within the examination period; many members of our school community will carry out religious observance at this time. Schools across the country have been issued with guidance and advice for young people and their families during Ramadan. This advice and guidance has been endorsed by a wide spectrum of leaders for the British Muslim community. The advice includes: adjustments to routine, eating healthily, staying hydrated during the times when one is permitted to eat and drink, make sure preparations for the school day and examinations are completed the evening before, remembering that if you are experiencing illness/dizziness/drowsiness that the fast can be terminated and the time made up later.

Following many hours of hard work on the part of your child and his/her teachers, we are confident that he/she will be able to achieve his/her best. If you have any questions regarding how to support your child, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Green, Pastoral Leader Year 11 or Miss Watts, Assistant Headteacher with any further questions that you may have. Yours sincerely
