Religion First graders learn about God’s plan of salvation for the world and for each of them as we study Bible stories from both the Old and New Testaments. A Learn by Heart verse, which correlates with our Bible story of the week, is said orally every Thursday morning. Additionally, first graders learn the Ten Commandments, Apostles’ Creed, Lord’s Prayer, and Martin Luther’s morning and evening prayers. We have a new religion series called One in Christ copyright-2011. Reading Our reading series offers opportunities for the students to develop fluency and comprehension skills by reading at their own level every day. Reading at home is also strongly encouraged. Reading books are sent home every Friday night to read over the weekend. Additional reading material/homework is sent home on Mondays. Our class participates in the Pizza Hut Book-It program, as well as a classroom reading club where children earn books based on the minutes they read outside of class. A life-long love of reading is the goal. Spelling We have weekly spelling lessons of 12 words. A spelling test is given each Friday over these words, along with a dictated sentence for the students to write. Writing Students develop their writing skills by making class books, writing in their journals, and responding to stories in their readers. Handwriting - copyright 2008 Proper formation of manuscript letters and numerals is taught and practiced in first grade. Math - series copyright 2009 A hands-on approach is used to teach basic addition and subtraction facts in first grade. Other skills such as adding and subtracting two-digit numbers, time, money, word problems, fractions, patterns, simple geometry, and measurement are also taught using the hands-on approach. Science
