Big Picture: 2 Samuel continues the climb to the pinnacle of Israel’s history as it develops its kingdom. It focuses primarily on the reign of David. The initial focus is the gradual end to civil war within the kingdom and the subsequent coming to power of King David. The progress and advancement of Israel is seen during David’s reign as well as the picture of forgiveness, compassion, and love in an unattainable way except through the power of God. Through the effects and consequences of sin, David is forced to flee his throne yet again and avoid civil war. At the end of the book, the foundation is laid for a stable kingdom and a construction of a permanent temple dedicated to God.
