Entrusted with the Gospel Imagine investing years of your life into building a company or renovating a house, and then realising the time has come to pass the fruit of your work on to someone else. (Some of our church family will need to use more imagination than others.) How would you feel? Paul’s second letter to Timothy gives us a window into just such a moment. Paul’s life is drawing to a close. He must entrust the work to someone else. So what will he care about? What does he hope and pray Timothy will continue to do once he’s gone? All of us have heard about Jesus from someone. And we are all used by God to pass on that message. So what is important as we teach our children and grandchildren about Jesus? What should they see in our life? This term is, once again, an exciting opportunity to grow in our knowledge of Christ and to share that good news with others. Praying for a life-transforming term, Russ
Check out a Growth Group One night a week for Growth Group sounds like a big commitment. It needs to be worth it. And we’re convinced it is. But what if you choose the wrong group? The time doesn’t work the way you’d hoped. Or maybe you just don’t click with the people in the group. We want to make trying out a group as low risk as possible. So here’s what we’re suggesting: Three week trial, no questions asked We’re making the first three weeks of Growth Groups a no-questions-asked trial period. Turn up to any group. Try it out. And if you don’t want to keep coming, no one will make you feel guilty. You’re free to stop, no questions asked. Every term, a clean slate Also, just because a Growth Group worked one term, we won’t assume it will work the next. Maybe you want to try a different group. So at the end of every term, we’ll ask you what you’re planning next term. Changing groups? Stopping for a while? Or continuing as-is? Just let us know and that’s fine. Again, we won’t make you feel guilty. The reason you should stay Because once you’ve tasted a Growth Group that works, we know you’ll want to keep going. So we’re not going to make you feel guilty just because it’s not working out.
None of the groups suit me You want to join a Growth Gruop. You’ve looked down the list. But none of the times will work for you. What then? Let Russ know Knowing the times and groups that will work best for you helps us plan how we’ll grow. So let us know you’re interested and what a group that works will look like. Find a friend? Maybe you can find someone else in the same situation. Maybe you could meet up with them and work through the study together. Plan for next time Right now your timetable doesn’t suit. But maybe that will change. Maybe you can change it. So be praying and look for ways to make it easier to attend a group. The reality is, life is messy. We understand. But that as we keep growing (numerically and spiritually), more and more people will want to be part of a Growth Group, and will find it possible to do so. Keep praying for this to happen.
We want you to stay in a group because it helps you grow. Because the people encourage you to know Christ and because you love studying the Bible with them. We won’t force you to settle for second best. Study Guide T1 2012 3
Connect ... what’s happening? We’ve been working at it, but how are we doing at connecting people to God through Jesus? We’ve been growing A few years ago maybe 120 people would visit our building on any Sunday. But some recent Sundays have seen more than 200. Numbers aren’t everything, but since hearing from God through the Bible is still the centre of our times together, it’s exciting to think how many more people are getting the chance to Connect to God each Sunday. Praise God for what he’s doing. Christianity Explained and Coffee As part of this growth, many people have asked to do Christianity Explained, either in a group or on their own. Others have been meeting over coffee to read the Bible with someone, exploring what it says. God is changing lives. Evangelism training Over the summer, some members of nightshift have also been developing skills in sharing the gospel. Pray for conversations to speak of Jesus.
The heart of serving Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. (1 Peter 4:10) We are blessed with so many people willing to serve in our church family. But sometimes we can serve more out of obligation than out of thanks. As we start a new year, 1 Peter reminds us that we serve for the sake of others in the way God has equipped us. If that doesn’t describe you, please let someone know. 4 Study Guide T1 2012
The same, but different Arundel Youth continues to be a great place to hang out with others who love Jesus and are in High School. But this year, things have changed. New experiences A big part of Arundel Youth is meeting with God by listening to his word. And we want to experience more of that. So we’re starting to meet in small groups each week, so that we can listen to God and discuss what he’s saying to us. It’s a fantastic opportunity. New time To make that possible, Arundel Youth is moving to Friday nights, 6–8.30pm. That makes Sunday less busy and maximises the time we can spend together, encouraging each other. Same people, Same God But Arundel Youth hasn’t really changed, because when we get together we enjoy being with the same great people and discovering more of the same great God that we serve. It’s a night you don’t want to miss out on.
Kids Camp Time!!! If you’re in Years 4–7, there’s a huge opportunity for you this term. Danny is taking a crew of kids to Kids Weekender, a camp run by the Presbyterian Church of Queensland especially for upper primary schoolers. The weekend promises to be a time of growing in God and having great fun. And if you go, and all your friends from kidZone go, then it just multiples the fun and the opportunity to grow in knowing Jesus. So make plans now to come. March 23rd–25th.
