ELDON HAZLET STATE PARK

Come visit and enjoy your stay! Eldon Hazlet State Park is located on beautiful Carlyle Lake, the largest man-made lake in Illinois. The park offers recreational opportunities for every family member–from various sporting activities, to hiking, to bird watching.

The Illini trail, located across from the store, leads to the Illini fishing pond, which is a great location to take young children fishing. The fishing pond is open to bank fishing.

The shy, retreating nature of this snake makes it hard to find. Should you come upon a snake, please do not kill or disturb it, but report it to the park staff, a campground host or call (618) 594-3015. Your cooperation is vital if we are to learn about this state endangered species. The areas on and around Carlyle Lake are home to an abundance of wildlife, including the Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake, an Illinois endangered species. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, in conjunction with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service initiated a study to learn more fully the habits, range and habitat necessary to sustain this protected species.

The following features in the Illini Campground are handicap accessible: All three shower buildings; campsites 93, 94, 96, 158, 159, 265 and 267; campground store; rent-a-cabins; playground and shelter at north end; Illini Amphitheater; campground bulletin boards; basketball court; and the public pool.

The Osage Youth Group Area is a primitive camping area for Youth Groups. It will accommodate approximately 200 people. The area consists of a picnic shelter, barbeque grill, outdoor privy toilets, water hydrant and a large open area for tent camping. With easy access to hiking trails and the lake, this area is a favorite of Scout and Church groups.

Eldon Hazlet State Park has more than nine miles of hiking trails throughout the park. Many trails are wheelchair accessible. All hiking trails are closed Wednesday through Sunday from early November to early January due to a controlled pheasant hunting program in the park during these dates. A hiking trail brochure is available for detailed information.

Boat Ramps

For your convenience, three boat ramps are located throughout the park. Allen Branch, one of the most popular on the lake, offers a four-lane ramp with a handicap accessible courtesy dock. Apache ramp, which is located near the Hazlet Cottages, has a two-lane ramp and a separate high water access ramp. Peppenhorst Branch has a graveled small boat ramp. Open seasonally, fish cleaning stations are located near the Allen Branch and Apache ramps.
