2006 CROSS COUNTRY REVIEW The Northern Illinois cross country team began the 2006 season with a solid fifth-place finish at the Elmhurst Early Bird Invitational. The competitive field boasted a total of 17 teams from the Chicagoland area and sophomore Meghan Ginter led the Huskies with an eighth-place finish (11:55). In the second week of competition, the Huskies traveled to Peoria to compete in the Bradley Open where Ginter once again set the pace for the NIU runners with a time of 19:32.03, good for a 19th place finish. Junior Mia Supanich-Winter turned in NIU’s second-fastest time with a 33rd place finish of 20:12.88 as the Huskies finished in seventh-place overall. The Huskies faced Mid-American Conference competition in week three as they squared off against Ball State, Eastern Michigan and Western Michigan at the Bronco Invitational. The Huskies finished fourth, and for the third week in a row Ginter collected the fastest time for the Huskies (19:15) with the rest of the team close behind her. The next stop for the NIU cross country squad was South Bend Ind. for the Notre Dame Adidas Classic, where they finished 19th out of 24 while competing against some of the best programs in the nation. Ginter placed 69th overall with a time of 19:15, giving her the top Huskie time for the fourth consecutive race. Supanich-Winter, who was just six seconds behind Ginter, finished with a mark of 19:21 for 77th place. The NIU cross-country team continued its domination of the Benedictine Eagle Invitational by winning a fifth-consecutive title. The Huskies placed four runners in the top 10, including Ginter (fourth, 23:42.7), Ashley Rittenbacher (sixth, 23:49.7), Supanich-Winter (seventh, 23:50) and Jessica Schauff (eighth, 23:51.5).
Ashley Rittenbacher was the second-fastest Huskie runner at the Elmhurst Invitational with a time of 12:41 helping NIU to a strong fifth-place finish in the first event of 2006.
The Huskies followed up their first-place finish by taking third at the UW-Parkside Invitational. It was Supanich-Winter’s turn to lead the Huskies as she finished in eighth-place with a time of 19:15. Three other NIU runners finished in the top 25, including Schauff (13th, 19:39), Rittenbacher (18th, 19:45) and Ginter (22nd, 19:58). The NIU runners finished 12th at the MAC Tournament. Supanich-Winter claimed the top finish for NIU with a 26th-place finish of 21:33.05. Schauff completed the race in the second fastest time for the Huskies to earn a 44th-place finish with a mark of 21:57. The Huskies wrapped up the 2006 season in Minneapolis, Minn. with a 20th-place finish at the NCAA Midwest Regional. Supanich-Winter was the first Huskie to cross the finish line, as she was 88th in 23:21.32. Ginter added the other NIU top-100 finish with a 94th-place mark of 23:26.47. Two NIU cross country participants were honored with postseason awards at the conclusion of the 2006 season. Ginter and Schauff were honored for their work on and off the course as they were named to the Academic All-MAC Cross Country Team. Ginter was the Huskies’ top runner in five out of eight races and maintained a 3.9 GPA in Nursing. Schauff earned a 3.86 GPA in accounting while competing in all eight meets for the Huskies. As a team the cross country squad ranked first among all Northern Illinois athletic programs in cumulative GPA for the spring semester. Meghan Ginter posted a season-best 19:15 at the Notre Dame Classic. In addition to being a standout on the course, Ginter earned Academic All-MAC recognition for her work in the classroom.

2006-07 Cross Country and Track & Field Media Guide
2007 TRACK & FIELD REVIEW Led by seniors Ashley Morrow and Lorene Skipper, who picked up titles in the season opener at Illinois State’s Redbird Open Dec. 9, 2006, the Huskies charged out of the blocks in 2007. Junior transfer Coretta Evans also proved her worth early on with a pair of third-place finishes in the 200 and 400-meter dash. The stage had been set, Morrow and Skipper would need to continue to perform at high levels and the other athletes would need to fill any voids left by 10 departed seniors. The first to fill those voids was Evans, who started the new year by setting a new school record 300-meter dash (40.9) while Skipper set a new record in the 500-meter (1:15.29) at the Notre Dame Open. Skipper had also set a new record a week prior at the Illinois Invitational in the 800-meter run (2:14.12). Not to be outdone the throwers, led by Morrow and fellow senior Margaret Gorski, left their mark at every event. Joining them on the tear through the indoor schedule was freshman Cora Caulfield, who picked up her first title as a Huskie in the Cardinal Invite with a mark of 42-1 in the shot put. The record breaking continued as Morrow set a new indoor shot put mark at 47-10 and Evans sprinted to a new 200-meter record (25.72) at the Wisconsin Elite Invitational. It would not take long for the Huskies to add to this historic indoor campaign, as Skipper would took second-place in the 800-meter run at the MAC Indoor Championships. Skipper’s performance earned her second-team All-MAC honors and was the highest finish in school history at the Indoor Championships for a Northern sprinter. As a team the Huskies ended the competition with 22.5 points, the highest point total in school history. “It’s a huge honor to be acknowledged by the conference for your hard work,” said head coach Connie Teaberry. “Lorene has worked very hard and she deserves the recognition. She has really done a great job and I am extremely proud of her.” Skipper continued her strong senior season with a second-place finish in the 800-meter run at the Baldy Castillo Invitational, the outdoor season opener. It was during the outdoor season that freshman Jessica Statler emerged as a force for the Huskies. After a second-place finish at Arizona State, Statler went on a tear. She won the next four high jump titles at NIU’s next four meets, including a jump of 1.75m/5-8.25 which broke the school record and qualified her for the NCAA Regional Championship.
Freshman April Anderson had the Huskies’ top mark in the long jump clearing 18-2.5 at the Baldy Castillo Invitational.
Northern Illinois University
The Huskies’ record-setting 4X400 relay team, Carolyn Vasquez, Coretta Evans, Brittany Houghton, and Lorene Skipper. The quartet set the mark at 3:46.84.
The distance runners showed flashes of excellence as sophomores Meghan Ginter and Stacey Rosch provided much needed points and were rewarded for their consistency by being named to the 2007 Outdoor Academic All-MAC squad. The Huskies entered the MAC Outdoor Championships hoping to improve on their record-breaking performance at the indoor championships. They finished a disappointing 11th place, but did leave with some new school records. Sophomore Shoshanna Brown made the jump of her young career in the triple jump final as she broke her personal best and the school record (11.59m / 38-0.25) on her way to an eighth-place finish. Not to be outdone, Evans broke her third and fourth records of the 2007 season by crushing the 400-meter record (55.59) and ran a leg on the 4x400meter relay team that eclipsed NIU’s previous best time (3:46.86) with a fourth-place finish. Skipper, Carolyn Vasquez and freshman Brittany Houghton joined Evans on that record-breaking team. Joining Statler in qualifying for the Regional Championships were Gorski and Morrow, both participating in the shot put. This would be where the greatest mark of the 2007 season would be made. While Statler would foul out and Gorski’s season ended, Morrow excelled as never before. The senior thrower who had anchored this team for the past few seasons finished fourth in the shot put (15.47m/50-9.25) making her the first Huskie since the program re-opened (2000-01) to make it to the NCAA Championships. Morrow was named to the All-Mideast Regional Team and traveled to Sacramento, Calif. where she finished her stellar career as the 26th-place shot putter in the NCAA. “Her NCAA experience was well deserved because she has worked so hard over the three years that I have known her on and off the field,” said Teaberry. “We are very fortunate to have had her as a member of our team. I am proud of her as is NIU for being the first to make the NCAA Championship since the program has been back.” The 2007 track and field season was full of record-breaking moments and surprising performances. The program looses top performers in Skipper, Gorski and Morrow, but have record holders returning in Brown, Evans, and Statler to lead next year’s squad. Together this team broke nine school records and compiled 23 titles.
