2006 Season Review The 2006 Creighton baseball season was one of many ups and downs. The Bluejays finished the year with a 31-21 overall record and a 13-1 1 conference mark, good for fourth place. The Jays opened the 2006 campaign with a road trip to Arkansas-Little Rock. Head coach Ed Servais observed at the time that there were 19 players on the bus who had never taken an at bat or thrown a pitch in a Division I baseball game. The inexperience showed as the team lost leads of at least three runs in each of the two games at UALR to begin the year 0-2. The team would open the next weekend with a tough 3-2 extra-inning loss to eventual Horizon League champion Illinois-Chicago in Mesa, Ariz., on February 17. Despite the setback, the UIC game was special as ambidextrous relief pitcher Pat Venditte would throw with both arms in a game for the first time in his college career, striking out batters from each side. Switching arms would become commonplace for the sophomore reliever and garner him national attention throughout the season, including a live appearance on ESPN2 in Scott Reese May. Creighton would turn around the slow start in dramatic fashion and did not suffer another defeat until March 24, a 15-game win streak that matched the second-longest in school history. The Bluejays briefly held the nation’s longest overall and road win streaks during that time, and jumped onto the national scene with a No. 27 national ranking from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper on March 20. Chris Gradoville also made a splash nationally with one of the best offensive weeks in school history during the streak. The catcher belted six homers and drove in 18 runs over a five-game stretch in Tennessee. He was honored as the national player of the week by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the NCBWA, and had three consecutive multiple-home run games against Tennessee Tech. The win streak would end with a series loss at Bradley to open MVC play, but Creighton would cap a 12-2 month of March with a dramatic 11th-inning walk-off double from Justin Mosley to defeat then-No. 13 Wichita State at Rosenblatt Stadium on the final day of March. The Bluejays started April where they left off in March, shutting out the Shockers 3-0 on April Fool’s Day before dropping the series finale. Baseball America recognized CU’s success by placing the team in the 21st spot of its April 3 poll, the highest ranking in any poll for Creighton since 2000. Creighton would stumble for the remainder of April, however, finishing the month with a 5-10 overall record and dropping to sixth in the league standings. As abruptly as the team began to slump at the beginning of April, it opened May in opposite fashion by taking two of three games on the road against Missouri State and following that performance with five more wins in a row for an outside shot at winning the conference title entering the final weekend at UNI. The Jays were part of history on May 16 as 21,158 fans watched CU and Nebraska hook up at Rosenblatt Stadium. The fans got their money’s worth, as Zach Daeges came within a few feet of hitting a walk-off grand slam before Nick Jaros caught the ball on the warning track to preserve NU’s 4-1 win. The crowd was the largest single-game attendance in college baseball in the 2006 regular season, and the ninth-largest regular season crowd in history. The game also outdrew seven of the 15 Major League Baseball games that night. Creighton closed the regular season at UNI, losing the opening game of the series to eliminate itself from Valley title contention. In game two, Chase Odenreider drove in all four CU runs including a three-run homer in the eighth inning for a 4-3 win. The Bluejays were guaranteed the fourth seed in the MVC Tournament even before losing to the Panthers in the final game of the regular season. In the opening round of the Valley Tournament, the Jays faced the tall order of MVC Pitcher of the Year Aaron Shafer on the hill for host Wichita State. Creighton jumped on the freshman early and often for seven runs in 2.1 innings, as the Jays cruised to an 11-8 victory with their sights set on the school’s first Valley Tournament title. In game two, the offense disappeared when Missouri State’s Ross Detwiler hurled a complete-game onehitter to send CU to the loser’s bracket. Collin Walker and Collin Brennan of Bradley were equally effective the next day, leading the Braves to a 1-0 victory that ended CU’s season. The season was not without its bright spots and left many reasons for optimism in the future. Creighton set the school and MVC record with 81 sacrifice bunts while leading the nation with a 1.56 per game average. CU was 8-7 against teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Jays return three-fourths of the infield, as Ryan Urzendowski, Chad Ogden and Darin Ruf will all be back in 2007. Freshman Zak Moore entered the startZach Daeges ing rotation late in the year and finished with a 1.91 ERA. Venditte also returns for another season, as does 2005 all-American Scott Reese, southpaw Ben Mancuso and all-conference players Marc Lewis and Gradoville.
