KEITH BYRNES College: Plattsburgh State

Head Coach Keith Byrnes enters his sixth season as head coach of the Frostburg State men's soccer program. Byrnes has led the Bobcats to a 45-45-7 overall record, including a 23-14-2 mark in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. The 2006 campaign saw FSU post a 7-11-1 overall record and a 4-4-1 mark against the conference. The Bobcats advanced to the AMCC Tournaments semifinals for the fifthstraight season. Frostburg State opened the season with its own tournament on the new turf field at Bobcat Stadium. FSU won its season opener 2-0 over Neumann. The Bobcats struggled through the regular season with losses to nationally ranked Johns Hopkins and NCAA Tournament participant Bethany. However, Byrnes’ team won two out of its final three games, including a 6-0 season finale win over La Roche to earn the sixth seed in the conference tournament. After a round one upset win over Lake Erie (2-0), FSU fell to Penn State Altoona 1-0 in the semis. In 2005, the Bobcats started the season 1-6 but rebounded to win five out of their next six contests. All five of the FSU wins during that stretch came via shutout as the Bobcats outscored their opponents 17-0. Frostburg State would close out the regular season with a 2-2 record and earn a No. 5 seed in the AMCC Tournament. FSU eliminated Penn State Behrend 2-1 in the opening round but fell to eventual league champion Medaille, 1-0, in double overtime. After starting the 2004 season 1-3, including a loss to No. 9 St. Lawrence, FSU gained momentum going 6-1-1. The Bobcats started AMCC action 3-0 before injuries took their toll and the team finished with a 5-3-1 league mark. FSU earned the No. 4 seed in the AMCC Tournament and downed rival Penn State Behrend 3-1 in the first round. The Bobcats then lost to eventual champion Pitt-Greensburg 2-1 in the semifinals to finish the year 11-8-2. In his first two years at the helm, Frostburg State posted an 18-16-4 overall record and an 8-4 conference slate. In his first season, Byrnes guided the Bobcats to a seventh-place ranking in the Miid-Atlantic Region according to the NCAA and an

eighth-place ranking in the region by the NSCAA/Adidas. In the second year, FSU tied for the AMCC regular-season title, were the runners-up in the AMCC Tournament and advanced to the ECAC Tournament for the 14th time in school history. Senior Mike Mutchler was selected to the NSCAA/adidas Mid-Atlantic Regional All-America second team. Byrnes came to Frostburg after a two-year stint as the parttime head coach at Plymouth State (N.H.) College, where he led the Panthers to a 29-11 overall record, a pair of post-season appearances and Little East Conference Player of the Year honors in both years. In his first season at Plymouth State, Byrnes guided the Panthers to Little East Conference regular-season and tournament championships and a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament. PSC advanced to the second round and finished with a 15-5 overall record. Byrnes then led the Panthers to a 14-6 overall mark in 2001, finishing as the runner-up in the LEC and winning the ECAC New England Tournament Championship. A 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh State (N.Y.), where he played four years for the Cardinals, Byrnes was an assistant coach at his alma mater for one season before serving as an assistant coach at Norwich University for two years. He helped Norwich win a school-record 17 games in 1999, capture the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Byrnes’ career as a player included three NCAA Tournament appearances and two State University of New York Athletic Conference championships. He was also a SUNYAC AllAcademic Team selection all four years. Byrnes has his national license from the NSCAA and his “B” license from the USSF. He has also been very active in the local community as he is the Co-Director of Frostburg State Soccer Camps and is the Head Coach for the Far West Region of the Maryland State Youth Soccer Associations District Development Program.

Brandon Rethemeyer College: Frostburg State

Assistant Coach Rethemeyer enters his third season as an assistant coach with the men’s soccer team but first as a graduate assistant and first helping coach the women's soccer team. He will help coach the goalkeepers for both of the FSU teams. Rethemeyer, who transferred into Frostburg State from Hagerstown CC, was a keeper for the Bobcats in the 2003 and 2004 seasons. He helped FSU to a combined 21-15-4 overall record including one ECAC Tournament appearance. In 2005, Rethemeyer traveled with the Bobcats to Scotland, where he played against professional, semi-professional and amateur teams, during a nine-day tour of the country. Rethemeyer not only brings playing knowledge to the Bobcat staff but a solid resume of coaching experience as well. He has been an instructor at both the Rich Daughtridge and Frostburg State Soccer Camps and the Denison Cabral Soccer Academy. Last year, Rethemeyer served as a graduate assistant in the

sports information office. Rethemeyer graduated in May 2006, with his bachelor's degree in health and physical education. He is working on his master's degree in education with a concentration in human performance.

When asked what the most important thing is about the 2007 Frostburg State men’s soccer team, sixth-year head coach Keith Byrnes replied chemistry. Despite the loss of some the team’s key players from a year ago, Byrnes is excited about the bond that this season’s squad has formed. “The returning players have taken on more of a leadership role than in previous year’s and the younger players are feeding off of it,” said Byrnes. “The individual personality’s on the team seem to be meshing and everyone appears to be on the same page.” However, there will be a bit of a learning curve this season as 50 percent of the team are freshman and the Bobcats have just two seniors. “I’m sure we’ll have to endure some bumps and bruises as the young guys get used to the college game and our system of play,” added Byrnes. “I’ve seen glimpse’s of what we are capable of but it will be a long road to get to where we want to be. This season, Frostburg State was picked fifth in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference preseason coaches poll but the team is expecting to finish higher. “Our goal is to crack the top four in the final standings,” stated Byrnes. “If the team can continue to improve and play with a high work rate, positive things will happen. The Bobcats will also have to overcome a major offensive challenge as 70 percent of the team’s offense from a year ago is gone. Coach Byrnes will look to his two seniors and four juniors to carry the load of not only the offense but help bring along the younger guys. Seniors Andrew Appelbaum (Severn, Md./Old Mill) and Alex Wilkinson (LaVale, Md./Bishop Walsh) will help anchor the team this season. Appelbaum played in 14 games on defense last season making nine starts while Wilkinson returns after finishing tied for second on the team with four goals last fall. Juniors Adam Gracia (Rockville, Md./Thomas Wootton), Jay Herford (Crofton, Md./South River), Gregg Laskow (Plainsboro, N.J./WWP-North) and Joe Norton (Baltimore, Md./Mount St. Joseph) will also be asked to help with the younger players. Gracia was a Second-Team All-AMCC selection last fall as a defender but has moved to the midfield to allow him to be more of an offensive threat. Gracia started in 15 games last season and had a team-high five assists. Herford assumes the starting goalkeeper position after seeing limited time during his first two seasons. He played in eight games last season with an even 3-3 record and was selected as the AMCC’s Goalkeeper of the Week and the ECAC’s Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 30. Laskow, along with Wilkinson, enter the season as the top returning scorers from last year with four goals each. Laskow is a speedy forward who should make a bigger impact offensively this season. Norton is a tough defender who started in eight games last season but will be a constant on the backline in ‘07. The seven sophomores who returned from last fall have talent as well led by Sean Jones (Pasadena, Md./Severna Park). Jones is entering his third season with the program but sat out last year with an injury. He has also locked down a 2007 Frostburg State Men’s Soccer Media Guide

Jay Herford starting defensive spot with his tough physical play. Greg Bistany (Greenbelt, Md./St. John's College), Michael Bowers (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville), Patrick Ferraris (Springfield, Va./Paul VI Catholic), Steven Jacobsen (Waldorf, Md./West Lake) and Alex Super (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) all saw time on the field last fall during their freshman campaigns and will contribute to the Bobcats this season. This season’s freshman class consists of Michael Bloomer (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville), Nick Bauer (Leonardtown, Md./Chopticon), Joe DiCicco (Cape May Courthouse, N.J./Middle Township), Dante Dozier (Greenbelt, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt), Ben Fraczkowski (Baltimore, Md./C. Milton Wright), Billy Hufnell (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck), Danny Hutchins (Baltimore, Md./Parkville), Mike Pistorio (Bel Air, Md./Harford Tech), Anthony Tossounian (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) and Andres Vega (Potomac, Md.//Wootton). Bloomer and Tossounian are defenders, Dozier and Hufnell are goalkeepers, Bauer, Fraczkowski, Hutchins and Pistorio are midfielders while DiCicco and Vega are forwards. Frostburg State welcomes one new staff member to the coaching ranks this fall. Nate Kish has been hired as an assistant coach this season after a four-year playing career at Capital in Columbus, Ohio. He has club coaching experience with Elite FC and has worked several camps including Columbus Crew summer camp and Hilliard Davidson and Salem high school camps. Kish also holds state and goalkeeping diplomas from the NSCAA. Brandon Rethemeyer, who helped with the team for the last two seasons on a limited basis, has now become the goalkeeper coach for both the men’s and women’s soccer programs. The 2007 schedule will be tough yet again for coach Byrnes and his club as the Bobcats look to keep their streak of five-straight years in the AMCC Tournament semifinals alive. The Bobcats face three 2006 NCAA Tournament teams; Medaille (20-1-1), Bethany (14-4-3) and Franklin & Marshall (13-4-3). FSU also faces a tough AMCC schedule that includes preseason No. 1 Penn State Altoona, 2006 ECAC Tournament participants. 3
