2007 YEAR
IN
REVIEW
The University of Memphis softball program took a step forward in its second year of existence in 2007. The Tigers finished the year with a 36-25 overall record and placed sixth in Conference USA with a 10-12 mark. The U of M won eight of its last 10 games in the season, including six-straight to earn its first trip to the six-team CUSA Championship. At the end of the season, Memphis graduated the program’s first seniors. Six players were honored for their contributions to the infant program and all six went on to earn their college degree. Those finishing their college playing careers in 2007 were Nicki Johnson, Jenna Kubesch, Bridgette McNulty, Christi Morrison, Lindsey Pridgen and Kara Ross. AN IMPROBABLE FINISH To those on the outside, Memphis’ attempt to become one of six Conference USA teams earning a trip to the league’s championship in Orlando, Fla., was over after the Tigers were swept in three games at Marshall in mid April. Memphis needed to win all six of its remaining CUSA games against UAB and UCF to earn a top six finish. One loss would eliminate the team. But Memphis took on a playoff mentality. For six-straight games, the Tigers knew a loss would end its season and a win would keep the team alive. And the team, led by its six seniors, refused to lose. Sweeping UAB and UCF proved to be a difficult task with all of the games decided by a run and five of the six going down as 2-1 games. Two of the games went a Memphis record 11 innings with the Tigers using walk-off hits to earn the victories. Senior pitcher Jenna Kubesch earned five of the six victories and allowed just three runs in 35 and a third innings for a microscopic 0.59 ERA. The Memphis career leader in nearly every pitching category struck out 43 batters, while allowing only 17 hits. After having won the first five games, the Tigers met for one final home game on May 6 with a win advancing the team to Orlando and a loss ending the season. On a day set aside to celebrate the Memphis seniors, the six upper classmen showed they weren’t quite ready to hang up the spikes. Led by the seniors, the U of M earned a 2-1 win and a three-game sweep of UCF. Senior Bridgette McNulty gave Memphis the first run of the game in the sixth inning on a leadoff home run to left field. Her eighth homer of the year began a two-run inning after the Tigers had stranded six base runners in the previous five innings. Senior Kara Ross then put on the eventual

received a commemorative souvenir ticket. The Tigers began playing in the new facility on March 24 in a three-game series against Houston. In all, Memphis played 18 home games in the stadium in 2007 and finished with a 12-6 record at the new complex. “This is huge for our program,” Thees said. “Having a place close to campus that is as beautiful as this place is wonderful. We’ve got the brick and the blue roofs. Everything about it screams Memphis and first class. Especially for recruiting purposes, having a place like this is going to make this program grow and grow.”
game-winner with her second walk of the game, giving way to senior pinch runner Christi Morrison. Morrison came around to score the winning run on a single by senior Lindsey Pridgen. “I can’t say enough about all my seniors,” said Memphis head coach Windy Thees. “The last few weeks of the season they really stepped up. Whether they got a hit or not, they had great at bats. Whether they made the best pitches in the world or not, they battled. I don’t know if I’ve ever been as proud of a team as I am of this one.” CONFERENCE USA CHAMPIONSHIP As the No. 6 seed in the Conference USA Championship in Orlando, Fla., Memphis faced third seeded Tulsa in the opening game. Tulsa came into the tournament having swept the Tigers in all six previous meetings between the two schools. Senior Jenna Kubesch gave up a leadoff home run in the first inning to give Tulsa an early lead. The dinger would be the only hit Kubesch would give up in the game. Down 1-0 in the seventh inning, the Tigers scored two runs to take the lead for the eventual victory without the benefit of a hit. Brittany Gooch scored from third on a wild pitch to tie the game. Tori Gross then brought in Christi Morrison with the game-winning run on a suicide squeeze bunt. Later that day, Memphis squared off against second seeded East Carolina in another pitching duel. Kubesch retired the first 27-consecutive batters against the Pirates and carried a perfect game into the ninth, but the Tigers failed to score when the opportunities were given, losing 1-0 to ECU in 10 innings. The loss snapped a program record eight-game winning streak. The Tigers were then eliminated from the tournament in another 1-0 game against Marshall. The game marked the 11th consecutive contest decided by a run for Memphis.
MEMPHIS TAKES NO. 7 LSU TO EXTRA INNINGS In the opening weekend of the 2007 season, Memphis began with a 4-1 start at the Easton Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La., and earned its way into the tournament championship game against host LSU. The LSU Tigers were ranked No. 7 in the nation and had already beaten Memphis 3-1 earlier that week. But the U of M showed just how far the program had come in the past year and battled the top 10 team into extra innings. The Tigers managed only two hits off LSU hurler Dani Hofer in the nine inning contest, but answered with a run every time LSU scored in regulation. A leadoff homer in the sixth inning gave LSU a 2-1 lead. However, Memphis freshman shortstop Heather Mott tied the game with a solo shot in the bottom of the inning. Memphis threatened to end the game in the bottom of the seventh inning by loading the bases with two outs, but was unable to score and eventually fell 7-2 after allowing five runs in the ninth. SUCCESS IN TENNESSEE Memphis found success in games played against Tennessee schools in 2007. In 14 games with in-state universities, the Tigers went 11-3. In the opening week, Memphis’ senior Jenna Kubesch threw a 1-0 no-hitter against Middle Tennessee at the Easton Tiger Classic in Baton Rouge, La. Memphis would go on to beat Middle Tennessee three times in the season and also earned doubleheader sweeps against Belmont, Lipscomb, UT Martin. The Tigers split doubleheaders with Tennessee State and Austin Peay and fell to No. 1 Tennessee in Knoxville, 4-1, after facing the 2007 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, Monica Abbott.
TIGERS OPEN NEW SOFTBALL STADIUM Memphis officially dedicated its new Tiger Softball Complex on the school’s Park Avenue Campus on Saturday, April 7 before the final contest of a three-game series with Tulsa. University of Memphis President Dr. Shirley C. Raines threw out the ceremonial first pitch to sophomore Kimmi Hayden to officially open the $1.7 million complex in front of a full house. U of M Athletic Director R.C. Johnson and other school administrators were also in attendance, and the first 250 fans
