2008 Cornell Big Red Baseball

a 11-10 win over Penn on April 24 on an RBI single to shortstop by sophomore Nathan Ford. Cornell entered the final series of the season against Princeton, needing just one win to spoil the Tigers' division title hopes. Princeton took the first three games, but the Big Red came up big in the season finale, taking a 5-4 victory in 12 innings behind a pair of outstanding pitching performances from Walker Toma and Blake Hamilton. Head coach Tom Ford's squad finished the year with a 1723 mark overall and an 8-12 record in Ivy League play — both marks better than the 2006 records. Additionally, despite finishing fourth in the Gehrig Division, the Big Red placed six players on the All-Ivy League teams, led by freshman designated hitter Justin Milo and senior left-hander Blake Hamilton. Milo was a unanimous selection to the first team, while Hamilton earned top team honors as a relief pitcher after factoring in half of the team's wins in league play with a pair of saves and a pair of wins. Earning second-team honors were junior second-baseman Jimmy Heinz and sophomore shortsop Scott Hardinger and sophomore thirdbaseman Nathan Ford. Fellow sophomore Domenic Di Ricco was named honorable mention for his play in left field. Domenic The Big Red also Di Ricco set a record for the highest fielding percentage in school history, posting a .970 mark on defense — thanks in some part to the new playing surface at Hoy Field. The fielding percentage topped the .968 mark set in head coach Tom Ford's first season in 1991. Cornell baseball also was recognized for its success in the classroom, as senior pitcher Jim Hyland and junior secondbaseman Jimmy Heinz were both named first-team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District I. Both players appeared on the national ballot for Academic All-America honors, but came up short in their bid for the top scholar-athlete recognition. In addition to the academic honors, freshman Justin Milo was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball. Milo was one of six designated hitters and one of just two Ivy League players to earn the award. Bidding a farewell to their collegiate playing days were five seniors — all members of the pitching staff. The five, now eligible to participate in this season's alumni baseball game, are Jim Hyland, Blake Hamilton, Tom Laughlin, Adam Loeding and Willie Meier.

Coaches and Staff

The Cornell baseball team made great strides in 2007, improving both the overall and Ivy League records from the previous season, and returns an outstanding core, losing just five pitchers from a solid pitching staff for the 2008 season. The Big Red opened the year with back-to-back trips to Philadelphia, first taking on Bucknell in a four-game set before battling La Salle and Villanova the following weekend. Following the first seven games, the Big Red stood at 3-4, with a pair of wins over La Salle and one over Bucknell, before embarking on the spring break trip to North Carolina. In the Tar Heel State, the Big Red got the trip started with a bang, scoring an 8-6 win at Davidson, but would drop the next three games before returning to the Empire State for a three-game weekend set with Army. Cornell Jimmy Heinz took the opener before losing the next two, and finishing the pre-Ivy League slate with a 6-10 mark. Cornell opened the Ivy League season with a split against Yale in the first game at the newly renovated Hoy Field, then went on to take both ends of the series from eventual Ivy League champion Brown, despite the second game being pushed back a day due to rain. After a non-league loss to LeMoyne, the Big Red improved to 5-1 in Ivy League play with a sweep over Dartmouth at Princeton, N.J., but dropped a pair of games the next day at Harvard to fall to 5-3 in league play and 11-14 overall. With the sweep over Dartmouth, Cornell was just over a third of the way through the league season, yet was just one game shy of tying the 2006 mark for league wins, and had already surpassed the season win total from the year before. A freak April snowstorm knocked out half of the series against Penn after dropping the first two games, but Cornell returned to action the following weekend, dropping three of four at Columbia. The postponements began to take its toll on the Big Red hurlers, as Cornell closed out the year with 10 games in the final eight days of the season. Not helping matters were a pair of 12-inning Walker Toma marathons, including
