THE SEASON — The No. 7/8 Big Red finished the 2008 season with an 11-4 overall record and its sixth straight Ivy League title with a mark of 5-1 in the conference. Cornell advanced to the NCAA tournament for the fifth straight season and finished the year ranking in the top 10 in the nation in face-off winning percentage, scoring offense, win percentage and scoring margin.

TOURNAMENT TIDBITS – Cornell’s 24 NCAA tournament victories rank seventh all-time, while its 21 appearances also stand seventh … Only six teams have more national titles than the Big Red … Last season marked the sixth time that Cornell has made it to the NCAA tournament during Coach Tambroni’s tenure, making it to the quarterfinal round three of the last four trips.

FINISHING STRONG – When leading at halftime, the Big Red was a perfect 8-0 on the season.

AT THE HELM — Jeff Tambroni finished his eighth season as head coach of the Big Red with a career record of 84-30. His winning percentage of .737 is the second-best among the nine coaches who have served as head coach at Cornell, ahead of the legendary Richie Moran (.680) and behind the all-time leader Ned Harkness (.972).

CHAMPIONSHIP LINEAGE – Three players on the Cornell roster have fathers that have won a national championship with the Big Red – David Lau (George ’78), Julian Levine (Jon ’76) and Shane O’Neill (John ’76).

ADDING ON – John Espey increased his production each and every season with the Big Red. As a freshman, he did not register a single point, but tallied one goal and two assists as a sophomore. His junior season, he was an offensive spark on the second midfield line with 10 goals and five assists. In his final season, Espey ranked fifth on the team in points with 15 goals and 11 assists for 26 points.

TAMBRONI AMONG THE BEST — Head coach Jeff Tambroni currently ranks fifth in the nation among active Division I coaches with a .737 winning percentage. Georgetown head coach David Urick is the nation’s leader (.752 ). EVERYBODY’S ALL-AMERICAN – For the second straight season, midfielder Max Seibald was named a first-team All-American. Joining Seibald on the 2008 All-American teams were John Glynn (second), Ryan Hurley (honorable mention) and Matt Moyer (honorable mention). The Big Red has placed at least four members on the All-American teams for the past four seasons. TICKLE THE (ALL) IVY – Following the season, four members of the Big Red – John Glynn, Ryan Hurley, Matt Moyer and Max Seibald – were named first-team All-Ivy, while two others – John Espey and Nick Gradinger – garnered honorable mention selections. Of the four first-team selections, Glynn, Hurley and Seibald were unanimous choices by the league’s coaches. CARRYING A TORCH – Former Cornell men’s lacrosse player Kyle Miller ’06 carried the Olympic torch on one of the final legs of its journey to Beijing for the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Summer Olympics on Aug. 8. Miller, who was selected after his older brother Josh wrote an essay to nominate him for the honor, ran a half-mile route with the torch in and around Shanghai on May 19, 2008. MARTY GLICKMAN AWARD – The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame & Museum named Max Seibald the 2008 Marty Glickman Outstanding Jewish Scholastic Athlete of the Year. Seibald is the second Cornell student-athlete to receive this award, joining football great Chad Levitt (1993-96), who earned the honor in 1997. The award was presented at the 16th Annual National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame Inductions on June 8, 2008. MLL CHAMPION – Former Cornell alumnus Pat Dutton ’99 helped the Rochester Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse to secure their first-ever MLL Steinfeld Cup with a 16-6 victory over the Western Conference Denver Outlaws in the 2008 MLL Zip Championship game. 2008 Season Review

WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU? – When Brown defeated Princeton on May 3, 2008 Cornell became the Ivy League’s representative to the NCAA tournament with the automatic qualifying bid by virtue of its victory over the Bears. FORGET BROWN … WHAT CAN GREEN DO FOR YOU? – If it weren’t for Dartmouth’s stunning victory over Princeton on April 26, 2008 the Big Red would have had to share the conference crown with both the Tigers and Brown, as all three teams would have finished with a 5-1 conference record. Instead, just Cornell and the Bears split the title. NIGHTTIME AT THE BOZ – The Cornell-Hobart rivalry reached a new milestone on May 2, 2008 as the teams faced-off in the first-ever night game to be played at Hobart’s legendary Boswell Field. The Big Red won the game, 15-7. 11-WINS – The Big Red has posted at least 11 wins in each of the past four seasons and five times overall during head coach Jeff Tambroni’s eight-year tenure. SINGLE-DIGIT SUCCESS – When holding its opponents to less than 10 goals, the Big Red was a perfect 10-0 on the season. Conversely, in Cornell’s four losses last season, its opponent scored in double-digits. The only game the Big Red won in which its foe scored more than 10 goals was a 16-11 victory over Dartmouth. ROOKIE OF THE WEEK – Shane O’Neill was named the Ivy League Rookie of the Week on April 28, 2008 for his efforts in the Big Red’s 11-7 victory over Brown. O’Neill became the first Big Red men’s lacrosse player to be named Rookie of the Week in over two years (Max Seibald – April 17, 2006). SOPHOMORE STANDOUT – In his first season as a starter, Ryan Hurley proved to be one of the great young offensive threats in Big Red history. His 60 points were the most by a Cornell sophomore since Eamon McEneaney tallied 96 in 1975. Other than McEneaney, the only other sophomore in Cornell history with more points than Hurley was Mike French (94 in 1974). In recent years, the only sophomore that has come close to matching Hurley’s output was Sean Greenhalgh, who tallied 46 points in 2003. SIXTH SENSE — Cornell’s six consecutive regular season Ivy League titles is the longest current stretch by any team in any conference.

COVER BOY – Max Seibald was featured alongside Duke’s Matt Danowski on the front of the February 2008 edition of Inside Lacrosse magazine. The magazine used dual covers to feature the top four players in the country with Seibald and Danowski on one, and Paul Rabil (Johns Hopkins) and Ben Rubeor (Virginia) on the other. In an article called“The Ballers”the magazine lists the 50 best collegiate players in Division I, placing Seibald fourth overall in the nation. Seibald was then featured on the cover of the March 2008 issue of Lacrosse Magazine. In a story entitled “To the Max,” author Nelson Coffin discusses the heavy expectations placed upon Seibald as he looked to lead the Big Red in the 2008 season.

SIX OF ONE … — With its victory over Brown on April 26, 2008 the Big Red claimed at least a share of the Ivy League title for the sixth straight season, the longest stretch since winning 10 straight championships between 1974-83.

NON-CONFERENCE WINS — Cornell is 21-3 in its last 24 regular-season non-conference games, dating back to the Big Red’s 16-14 victory over Syracuse in the Carrier Dome on April 12, 2005. FACE-OFF FEVER – The 2008 Big Red succeeded in the face-off circle at a clip not seen in over 20 years, as the team won the face-off battle in 13-of-15 contests during the year, surpassing the 1986 season when it won the face-off battle in 12 games. TURN OF THE CENTURY – With his two goals and one assist vs. Hobart, Max Seibald became the 34th player in Cornell history to register 100 career points. With his 63 goals and 40 assists he will enter his final season with 103 career points. John Glynn will also head into his final season looking for his 100th career point, with his 44 goals and 51 assists putting him at 95. HOME IS WHERE THE WINS ARE — During Coach Tambroni’s tenure, the Big Red is 44-10 at Schoellkopf Field, including a perfect 7-0 record in 2007 and a 6-0 slate during the 2005 season. Cornell finished the 2008 season with a 6-2 record at home. WIN NO. 650 – Cornell’s 16-11 victory over Dartmouth on April 12 was the 650th win in program history. To date, the team’s 652 victories rank sixth all-time among the winningest programs in collegiate lacrosse. OPRAH’S BIG GIVE – Former Cornell University men’s lacrosse player Stephen Paletta ’87 was named the winner of Oprah’s Big Give on April 20, 2008. After spending eight weeks competing to change the lives of complete strangers in the most creative and dramatic ways possible, Paletta was awarded a $1 million prize, half of which must be used to continue helping others. A four-year letter winner for the Big Red defense, Paletta was a part of Cornell’s 1987 national runner-up squad and was named a second-team All-American that season. BACK-TO-BACK – The Big Red has not lost back-to-back games since the 2002 season when Cornell fell to Princeton and Brown on consecutive weekends. ELITE COMPANY – Over the past five seasons, Cornell has been among the best in the nation, boasting the second highest winning percentage of all Division I teams during that span (.781) and ranking fifth overall in number of victories (57). GOING STREAKING – Max Seibald ended the 2008 season with the longest point-scoring streak on the team and the fifth longest in the nation, having registered at least one point in the last 34 games, dating back to Cornell’s 4-3 victory over Princeton on April 22, 2006. He will enter the 2009 season tied with Zack Greer for the longest point scoring streak in the country. CONFERENCE WINS — Cornell had its 14-game Ivy League winning-streak snapped after losing to Princeton on April 21, 2008. The 14 consecutive victories was the second-longest stretch in school history behind only its NCAA record 39-game streak from 1973-79. The 14 straight wins was also the longest active conference winning streak in the nation at the time that it ended.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Ryan Hurley earned his second Ivy League Player of the Week honor on April 7, 2008 after his five-goal, one-assist effort helped Cornell defeat Harvard, 11-7. HURLEY HURTS ’EM – Ryan Hurley’s goal with one second remaining in overtime gave the Big Red an 8-7 victory over Yale in its Ivy League season opener on March 22, 2008. DOUBLE THE OVERTIME – Cornell played two overtime games last season, defeating both Navy and Yale in the extra session, 8-7. During Coach Tambroni’s eight-year tenure, the Big Red has played two overtime games in the same season three times, winning both contests in 2004 and 2008, while going 1-1 in 2001.

QUICK HITS — Max Seibald and John Glynn teamed up to set a new school record when they scored consecutive goals just six seconds apart vs. Army on March 8. Seibald scored with 4:05 remaining in the third quarter and Glynn won the ensuing face-off, took it the length of the field and scored with 3:59 showing on the clock. The six second differential is also the second fastest in NCAA history for consecutive goals by members of the same team. The record of five seconds is held by Army’s Rob Lewis and Justin Charise who teamed up for a pair of goals vs. Penn State on April 3, 1999, and Lawrence Booth, who scored two straight goals for Butler against Denver on April 23, 2004. HARD START — Cornell opened the 2008 season with three straight nationally-ranked opponents and posted a 2-1 record, sandwiching wins over Navy and Army around a loss to North Carolina. HARD HAT – Attackman Chris Finn was selected to carry the Hard Hat for the 2008 season. The tradition of the Hard Hat began in the fall of 1999. Midway through the fall season, a player is selected to carry the Hard Hat for the year. The recipient is someone that the coaches feel demonstrates a blue-collar approach to the game of lacrosse; he is driven and selfless, not the most talented player on the field, but consistently the hardest worker. He puts the team first, and embodies how the coaches want Cornell players to act and respond on or off the field. BALANCED ATTACK – Cornell had 19 different players register at least one point during the 2008 season. FINN FINISHES – Chris Finn scored the game-winning goal as the Big Red defeated Navy, 8-7 in overtime. FOR STARTERS – With its 8-7 overtime win against Navy, the Big Red improved to 59-50-5 all-time in season openers, including a 6-2 mark during Coach Jeff Tambroni’s tenure. OH CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN – Cornell’s three captains for the 2008 season were seniors John Glynn and Danny Nathan, as well as junior Max Seibald.

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — Chris Finn scored the unassisted game-winner 2:37 into overtime to lift No. 6 Cornell to an 8-7 victory over Navy at Mitchel Athletic Complex, capping a furious comeback that saw the Big Red score twice in the final minute of regulation to extend the game. Cornell rallied from a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter, as Max Seibald scored with 12 seconds remaining to knot the game at 7-7. Ryan Hurley registered three points on two goals and an assist, while Finn (two goals) and John Glynn (two assists) had two points each. Navy was led by Nick Mirabito with three goals and one assist. The game was evenly matched with both teams taking 28 shots and Navy holding a slim edge in both ground balls (37-31) and turnovers (21-20). The Midshipmen won 10-of-19 face-offs and converted its only man-up opportunity. In goal, Jake Myers made 10 saves and was instrumental in the final minutes as he helped the Big Red force a crucial Navy turnover. For the Mids, Matt Coughlin made seven saves, including several great stops in the second and third quarters to help Navy take the lead. Cornell opened up a 4-1 lead with 6:54 remaining in the second quarter thanks to a brilliant goal by Finn, who scored despite being checked to the ground. From there, everything seemed to go Navy’s way, as the Mids scored six unanswered tallies. Included in the run was a goal that was scored when a pass from a Navy player bounced off a Cornell player and slipped past Myers. Trailing 7-4 midway through the final quarter, John Espey ended a nearly 30 minute scoring drought for the Big Red as he started the Cornell comeback. An amazing defensive effort forced a Navy turnover with just over one minute to play to give Cornell the ball and Hurley capitalized, taking a pass from Glynn and scoring with 53 seconds remaining to set up Seibald and Finn’s heroics. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The No. 5/6 Big Red fell to No. 7/8 North Carolina, 13-8, at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and despite coming within two goals twice, the Big Red was unable to get back into the contest. Martinez stopped one shot and allowed an empty net goal in 8:44 of action. After a slow start at the face-off circle, the Big Red finished strong, having won 13-of-24 attempts, with Glynn winning 11-of-15 restarts, including an unbelievable 5-of-7 against one of the nation’s best in UNC’s Shane Walterhoefer, eventually driving Walerhoefer out of the game. Cornell also held the slim 35-33 edge in ground balls. Pierce Derkac led the team with six pickups. UNC had one less turnover than the Big Red (10) and capitalized on 3-of-4 extra-man opportunities, while Cornell managed to score on just 1-of-8 man-up situations. Cornell (1-1) UNC (3-0)

ITHACA, N.Y. — Ryan Hurley tucked a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net on a rush from the corner of the field with one second remaining in overtime to give the No. 6/7 Big Red a dramatic 8-7 victory over Yale at Schoellkopf Field. The goal capped an exciting game that was played evenly throughout and ruined a 13-save effort by George Carafides that kept Yale in the contest. Hurley posted two goals and an assist, while John Espey added a goal and two assists. Max Seibald scored twice, including the game-tying goal with 5:31 left in regulation. He added 6-of-10 wins in the face-off circle after Yale dominated early, and added a team-best six ground balls. Jake Myers had a strong day in goal, making 10 saves to earn the win. The Bulldogs got two goals and two assists from Tyler Casertano, while Gregory DuBoff won 12-of-18 face-offs. Six different players combined for the Bulldogs’ seven goals in a balanced offensive effort. Cornell seemed to be putting the game away early, jumping out to a 4-2 lead in the first 8:47 as Hurley, Rocco Romero, Seibald and Christopher Ritchie all scored. Yale, however, answered back with a 6-0 scoring run and a tally by Chris Lindsey gave the visitors a 6-4 edge going into halftime. The Big Red defense solved Yale in the second half, however, limiting the Bulldogs to one goal and 15 shots in the final 33:59 while the offense scored four times. Cornell tied the game in the third quarter when Espey fed Chris Finn and then took one himself to knot the game at 6-6. Yale took the advantage back on Kyle Washabaugh’s goal with 1:12 left in the period and held it for 10:41 of game action until Seibald’s rocket set up Hurley’s heroics.

DALLAS — After a rocky start, the No. 6/7 Big Red used a 12-1 run to break open a 2-2 game as it rolled to a 20-7 victory over No. 20 Denver on a rain-soaked Highland Park High School field in Dallas, Texas. Meet The Staff

ITHACA, N.Y. — No. 1 Syracuse showed why it was the top-ranked team in the nation, using a strong first half to knock off No. 5 Cornell 15-8 at Schoellkopf Field. The game was the most lopsided in the series since the 1997 season and it was the first time in four years that the margin of victory was greater than two goals. With the win, the Orange improved to 9-1 on the year, while the Big Red slipped to 8-2. Mike Leveille had five goals and added an assist and Kenny Nims added two goals and five assists to spearhead a Syracuse attack that outshot Cornell 46-33 on the evening. SU went 4-of-10 on the extra-man, while the Big Red was limited to an 0-of-6 night. He also was active outside the crease, winning five ground balls for the Orange. Cornell goalkeeper Jake Myers, a Syracuse transfer, had a strong night in goal with a career-high 14 saves. Pacing the Big Red offense was John Glynn, who posted three goals and two assists, while Max Seibald had two goals and an assist. Cornell had a strong day in the face-off circle against the Orange, who were ranked third in the nation in face-off wins, earning 15-of-27 restarts, thanks mostly to an 11-of-19 effort from Tommy Schmicker. GENEVA, N.Y. — In a game that was billed as one of the most emotionally charged contests in Division I men’s lacrosse this season, it was a calm and collected Cornell team that ruled the day in a 15-7 victory over Hobart in front of 1,700 fans in the first-ever night game played at Boswell Field. College lacrosse’s oldest rivalry did not disappoint Big Red fans, as the visitors won 19-of-25 face-offs and dominated throughout in closing the regular season with an 11-3 record. After finding out earlier this week that Hobart would drop down NCAA classifications to Division III, Thursday night the College’s Board of Trustees reversed its decision after an alumni campaign to keep the team at its current level. With emotions running high, Hobart moved the game to Boswell Field and brought in portable lights to play the game in front of a large and boisterous crowd. While the crowd was everything it was advertised to be, the Big Red methodically picked the Statesmen apart, jumping out to an 8-1 lead midway through the second period and was never challenged. John Glynn had two goals and three assists to lead the offense, but just as importantly won 9-of-13 face-offs to spearhead a dominant 19-of-25 day at the “x”. Christopher Ritchie added three goals and Max Seibald (two goals, one assist), Ryan Hurley (two goals, one assist) and Chris Finn (two goals, one assist) also had multi-point games. Tommy Schmicker aided Glynn in the face-off circle, winning 10-of-12 restarts. In goal, Jake Myers made nine saves and allowed six goals in 50 minutes before giving way to Mat Martinez for the final 10 minutes. The freshman made three saves and gave up the final goal of the contest. Cornell (11-3) Hobart (8-6)

#12/11 OHIO STATE 15, #7/8 CORNELL 7

May 10, 2008 • Schoellkopf Field

ITHACA, N.Y. — Ohio State goaltender Stefan Schroder went the length of the field to score the first goal of the game, and the Buckeyes never looked back, as OSU went on to defeat Cornell 15-7 in a men’s NCAA first round game at Schoellkopf Field. Peet Poillon scored three goals, while Joel Delgarno, Kevin Buchanan and James Green each added two apiece for Ohio State. Schroder made nine saves and allowed five goals before Brandon Freeman came on in relief and allowed two goals in the final 2:34 of the contest. John Glynn led the Big Red with two goals and two assists, while winning 13-of-19 face offs and picking up nine ground balls. Ryan Hurley (two goals, one assist) and Max Seibald (two goals) were the only other multi-point scorers for the team. In goal, Jake Myers, Kyle Harer and Mat Martinez combined to stop seven shots for Cornell, with Harer making five saves and allowing three goals in the final 28:40. Cornell held the edge in shots (37-29) and ground balls (31-27) and won 16-of-25 face-offs. Poillon sent the visitors into the first intermission with a 5-1 lead, but the Big Red wasted no time scoring at the start of the second period as Seibald won the face-off, streaked up field and ripped a left handed shot into the upper right hand corner of the goal to make it a 5-2 game. Six straight OSU goals sent the Buckeyes into halftime with an 11-2 lead, a deficit from which the Big Red was unable to recover.
