2008 FRANKENMUTH FOOTBALL GAME SUMMARIES Swan Valley 29 – Frankenmuth 21 (OT): The Frankenmuth Eagles opened the 2008 season by traveling to Swan Valley in a non-conference game and lost by a 29 – 21 score in overtime. The Vikings jumped out to a 7 – 0 1st quarter lead on a 9-yard TD pass play. The Eagles tied the score after a Lucas Steele fumble recovery at the 1:54 mark of the 2nd quarter on a Ben List 3-yard run and a Nathan Krafft PAT. Swan Valley would score twice in the 3 rd quarter on two Marck Berden rushing TD’s to take a 21 – 7 lead entering the 4th quarter. Frankenmuth would battle back, scoring on a Matt Cramer to Matt McMeans 27-yard TD pass play and with only 8 seconds remaining, Cramer rambled 20-yards and Krafft PAT forced the game into overtime. In overtime, Swan Valley would have the first possession and scored on Berden’s 3-yard run and the two-point conversion put the Vikings in the lead, 29 – 21. The Eagles failed to score, being stopped at the 2-yard line on a 4th down play. Frankenmuth gained 310 yards rushing, led by Cramer’s 142 yards on 30 attempts. Luke Sheppard led the defense with 8 tackles and an interception and Ben Deschaine also had 8 tackles. Frankenmuth 28 – North Branch 22: The Eagles opened Tri-Valley East action by hosting the Bronco’s from North Branch in a 28 – 22 victory. Frankenmuth took the opening possession 70-yards in 11-plays, capped by Matt Cramer’s 3-yard run and the first of Nathan Krafft’s four PAT’s. The Bronoco’s answered back just 20 seconds later, scoring on a 74-yard run, knotting the score at 7 – 7. The Eagles again go on an 11-play drive, scoring on a Matt McMeans 7-yard run at the 1:03 mark of the 1st quarter. ‘Muth’ would extend its lead to 21- 7 late in the 2nd quarter when Cramer would score his second TD on a 13-yard run. North Branch would cut the halftime lead to 21 – 10 by converting on a 25-yard field goal with no time remaining in the half. After a scoreless 3 rd quarter, Cramer would score on the first play of the 4th quarter on Cramer’s 22-yard run and the Eagles led 28 – 10. But again, the Bronco’s scored quickly, scoring on an 81-yard run, but the PAT was blocked and the Eagles led 28 – 16. After Frankenmuth was forced to punt, North Branch narrowed the score to 28 – 22 on a 56yard run with 2:56 remaining. North Branch would then successfully recover an on-side kick, but the Eagle defense held on downs. Frankenmuth was again forced to punt and with 10 seconds remaining, North Branch completed a long pass play, but time expired for the Eagles 28 – 22 victory. Cramer gained 119 yards rushing and Tyler Schiefer recorded 8 tackles. Caro 22 – Frankenmuth 19: In the 50th meeting between the Caro Tigers and the Frankenmuth Eagles, the Tigers won a dramatic 22 – 19 contest. The Tigers jumped out to a 16 – 0 halftime lead, scoring on the opening drive of the game and the first play of the 2nd quarter. The Eagles narrowed the lead to16 – 6 on D.J. Duvernois 4-yard run and after Cory Trinklein intercepted his 2nd pass of the game, Matt McMeans scored on a 3-yard run at the 1:43 mark of the 3rd quarter, and the Tigers lead 16 – 13 entering the final quarter. Frankenmuth took the lead 19 – 16, going 72-yards in 13-plays, on Matt Cramer’s 10-yard run with 3:50 remaining. But, the Tigers scored on a 4 th & 15 pass play from 25-yards with only 32 seconds remaining to pull out the 22 – 19 win. McMeans gained 172-yards on 22 attempts to lead the offense. Nathan Krafft registered 14 tackles followed by Luke Sheppard’s 11 tackles.
Millington 7 – Frankenmuth 0: In a game between the Millington Cardinals and the Eagles, the Cardinals came away with a 7 – 0 win. After a scoreless 2nd quarter, Millington scored at the 8:56 mark of the 2nd quarter for the only points of the game. The Eagles ended the 1 st half driving 72-yards in 10-plays, only to miss a 32-yard field goal attempt to end the half. The 2nd half was an exchange of number possessions between the two teams. Frankenmuth made an attempt to knot the score in the 4 th quarter, going 80-yards on 12-plays, only to come up short at the Millington 15-yard line and Millington would run out the clock on the last couple minutes of the game. Mat Cramer completed 7 of 15 passes for 59-yards with Nathan Krafft grabbing three passes. Tyler Schiefer and Adam Piesko each collected 10 tackles. Frankemuth 37 – Buena Vista 26: In the first meeting between Frankenmuth and the Buena Vista Knights, the Eagles defeated the Knights 37 – 26 in a non-conference game. Frankenmuth jumped out to a 34 – 0 halftime lead. Matt Cramer scored two 1st quarter touchdown runs of 1 & 37 yards and Jake Frank scored two 2nd quarter scores of 10 & 17 yards and Matt McMeans hit pay dirt from 4-yards. The Knights scored four 2nd half scores, while Nathan Krafft kicked a 30-yard field goal for the 37 – 26 final. Jake Frank rushed for 115 yards to lead the offense. Frankenmuth 33 – Bridgeport 26: In the Eagles homecoming game, Frankenmuth defeated the Bridgeport Bearcats in an exciting 33 – 26 victory. Each team scored in the 1st quarter, with the Bearcats scoring at the 8:14 mark and the Eagles scoring at the 3:44 mark on Matt McMeans 15-yard run. In the 2nd quarter, Bridgeport took a 13 – 7 lead on Bryson Ruffin’s 18-yard run, but with 3:21 remaining in the half, Jake frank scored from 37-yards out, but the PAT failed and the two remains deadlocked at thirteen all. The 3rd quarter was scoreless, but the 4th quarter would bring some excitement. The Bearcats took a 20 – 13 lead on Ruffin’s 5-yard run, but on the ensuing Eagle possession, McMeans would sprint 80-yard to again knot the score at 20 – 20. But again Bridgeport would take the lead, scoring on a 76-yard pass play, but the missed PAT would leave the score at 26 – 20. At the 7:15 mark, Jake Frank scored from 11-yards, but the Eagles missed the PAT and again the score was tied 26 – 26. The key defensive play of the game would come on the next possession, when Eagle defender recovered a Bearcat fumble on Bridgeport’s 17-yard line and three plays later, Matt Cramer connected with Nathan Krafft on a 25-yard pass play and Krafft’s PAT gave the Eagles the 33 – 26 lead. The Eagled defense would hold Bridgeport on a last attempt to score. Cramer was the leading tackler with nine. McMeans 174-yards rushing on 15 attempts and Frank gained 97-yards on the same number of attempts. Essexville-Garber 46 – Frankenmuth 17: Frankenmuth traveled to Essexville in a Tri-Valley East battle and Dukes defeated the Eagles 46 – 17. The Dukes scored on their first drive on a 30-yard pass play to take a 7 – 0 lead. With 49 seconds remaining in the half, Nathan Krafft connected on a 30-yard field goal to narrow the lead to 7 – 3. Garber added three 2nd quarter scores, as the Eagles scored a TD on a Matt Cramer to Krafft 19-yard pass play and the score stood 28 – 10 at the half. Essexville would tack on three more 2nd half scores before the Eagles scored on Ben List 8-yard run with 3:22 remaining in the game. Matt McMeans led the Eagle rushers with 103 yards. Tyler Schiefer and Nathan Bourdow each had 8 tackles for the Frankenmuth defense.
Frankenmuth 28 – Birch Run 21: The Eagles would play host to the Birch Run Panthers and Frankenmuth would be victories 28 – 21. Frankenmuth would score first at the 2:22 mark of the 1 st quarter on Ben List’s 29-yard run. The Eagles would extend their lead to 14 – 0 in the 2nd quarter on List’s second score on a 22-yard run. The Panthers would battle back, scoring on a 28-yard pass play and after an Eagle’s fumble deep in their territory, Birch Run would even the score on a 2-yard run with 2:40 remaining in the 1st half and that score would hold at the half. Both teams would score in the 3rd quarter, with the Eagles scoring first on a Matt Cramer 11-yard run and Birch Run hitting pay dirt on a 5-yard pass play and the score stood at 21 – 21 going into the final quarter. Frankenmuth would put up the go ahead score at 10:39 on a 64-yard pass play from Cramer to Nathan Krafft and Krafft would tack on his fourth PAT of the game for a 28 – 21 Eagle lead. With 3:58 remaining, Birch Run would start a drive on their own 26-yard line and get deep into Eagle territory when at the 1:26 mark, ‘Muth’ defender Nathan Jammer would strip the Panther ball carrier and Krafft would recover the fumble to preserve the victory. Matt McMeans led the rushers with 93-yards, while Cramer was 3 of 6 passing for 73-yards. The defense, which recorded five quarterback sacks, was led by Tyler Schiefer’s 15 tackles. Standish-Sterling 35 – Frankenmuth 0: The undefeated and #2 ranked Division 5 Standish-Sterling Panthers traveled to Frankenmuth and defeated the Eagles 35 – 0. The Panthers jumped out to a 28 – 0 halftime lead, coasting to the final 35 – 0 win. Frankenmuth entered the “red zone” four times, but where unable to put the ball in the end zone. Ben List rushed for 154 yards on 20 carries to lead the Eagle rushing attack.
