Last Time Christopher Newport opened the USA South regular season with an 82-75 win over Shenandoah last Wednesday. The Captains were led by four different players in double figures. Rookie Tra Benefield posted his fourth double-double of the year with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while junior Conley Taylor had a team-high 24 points. After Shenandoah raced out to a 15-point lead early, the Captains caught fire and closed the first half on a 25-6 run to take a 39-35 halftime lead. The game remained close for most of the second half. Shenandoah pulled to within two with 7:15 remaining, but a 15-4 run for CNU put the game away. Senior Mike Green was terrific in the second half, scoring 13 points on 6-of8 shooting from the field. He ended up with 20 points and was one of four Captains in double-digits. Taylor led the way with 24 and added 7 rebounds, five assists and a blocked shot, while Green posted 20 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals and a block. Benefield’s 17 points and 10 rebounds came on 8-of-15 shooting and sophomore point guard Paul Meredith also finished with 12 points, seven assists, four rebounds and three steals.
Series Info The series with North Carolina Wesleyan is the longest in CNU men’s basketball history. The game Wednesday night will be the 101st all-time, with the Captains holding a 64-36 lead over the first 100. The teams met three times last year. Both teams won on their home court during the regular season, and then the Captains beat the Bishops, 67-63, in the USA South Championship Game at the Freeman Center. The teams are deadlocked at 21-21 all-time in games played in Rocky Mount. The Bishops will play the Captains at the Freeman Center on February 5th.
About the Bishops North Carolina Wesleyan has an overall record of 9-5 and a 1-0 mark in the USA South. John Thompson’s squad has won its last three games, including an 83-64 triumph last Saturday at Shenandoah. Thompson is in his 16th year at NCW and is the dean of the USA South coaches. He has an overall record of 227-185 (.551). He is 16-21 all-time vs. the Captains.
Next Up The Captains host the USA South’s top team, Ferrum College, this Saturday. Game time is set for 4 pm at the Freeman Center. The Panthers are off to a 13-1 start.

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL 2010/11 GREEN OVER A GRAND Career Scoring Leaders
CNU senior Mike Green became the 26th player in CNU history to go over the 1,000-point mark in the December 17th win at Lynchburg. Green now has 1,057 points for his career, 23rd on the all-time list. Green is now averaging 14.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.
TAYLOR MADE Junior Conley Taylor has posted some big numbers this year for the Captains. He is now just 56 points away from joining the 1,000-point club in only his junior season. Taylor scored 44 earlier this season at Frostburg State, the second-highest single game total in CNU history behind only Ted Berry’s 47 in 1993. The Newport News native tops CNU in scoring, averaging 23.3 points per game. He has scored more than 20 points eight times this year, including the last five games.
USA SOUTH WEEKLY HONORS Junior Conley Taylor and freshman Tra Benefield have both been honored multiple times this season by the USA South Athletic Conference. Taylor, a product of Menchville High School in Newport News, has been named the conference’s Player of the Week three times. Benefield, a first-year standout from Richmond, was been selected Rookie of the Week in the league six times in seven weeks. The only week Benefield has not taken the honor this season was the week the Captains did not play.
NEWEST CAPTAIN The Captains added sophomore guard Paul Meredith to the roster for the second semester, and he’s made a big difference. Meredith made his debut at Mary Washington on December 13th, and has started the last five games. A graduate of Bethel High School in Hampton, Meredith played his freshman season at Virginia Wesleyan two years ago and was at Old Dominion this year. Meredith is averaging 8.5 points and 7.5 assists per game for CNU. He is wearing #11 for the Captains.

CHRISTOPHER NEWPORT UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL 2010/11 HEAD COACH JOHN KRIKORIAN John Krikorian joined a very exclusive club on June 14, 2010. After leading the United States Merchant Marine Academy basketball team for the last four seasons, Krikorian was named just the fourth men’s basketball head coach in Christopher Newport University history. The program heads into its 44th year in the 2010-2011 season.
ASSISTANT COACHES SHAWN POSTIGLIONE
“I am excited about the opportunity to lead the men’s basketball program at Christopher Newport University,” Krikorian said. “The University has so much to offer its student-athletes, and I am looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead in keeping Captains basketball among the nation’s elite programs. I also look forward to having a mentor in Coach Woollum who has established himself among the best coaches in college basketball.” Krikorian takes the helm from C.J. Woollum, who retired from coaching after leading the Captains for 26 seasons and winning 502 games in the process. To replace a coach of Woollum’s stature, CNU needed a proven winner with a strong work ethic and passion for the game. Krikorian meets all of the requirements.
First Year
A native of Auburn, Massachusetts, “Coach K” compiled a record of 65-42 (.607) with the Mariners, and led the squad to a 24-5 record last season. The Merchant Marine Academy won the Landmark Conference regular-season and post-season championships in 2009-2010 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. He was named the 2010 Landmark Conference Coach of the Year. During his tenure at the Merchant Marine Academy, Krikorian transformed the program and put particular focus on defense. He improved one of the lowest-rated scoring defenses in the nation to the #4 scoring defense in the country last season.
ROLAND ROSS
His squads showed steady improvement, especially in conference play, as the Mariners went 10-4 and 12-2 the last two seasons in the Landmark Conference. “My last four years as head coach at the United States Merchant Marine Academy have been very rewarding,” Krikorian said. “Kings Point has made me a better coach, leader, and human being.” Krikorian’s journey to CNU began with a passion for basketball from an early age, and a tremendous work ethic on the court as an athlete and in the classroom as a student. He earned a bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering in 1996 from the University of Pennsylvania, where he played on the junior varsity basketball team coached by Steve Donahue, who was recently named the head coach at Boston College after years of success at Cornell. Krikorian played as a sophomore and junior on the Penn JV squad, and then became a student assistant at
Following his college days, Krikorian spent two years in the business world working for Princeton Consultants, an information management company in Princeton, New Jersey.
26th Year
In 1998, Krikorian returned to his passion and accepted the position of graduate assistant basketball coach at West Virginia Wesleyan College. What followed was a steady climb up the ladder of the college coaching ranks. !! as an assistant coach under Billy Lange during the 1999-2000 season. After a season there, he returned to his alma mater for two seasons, working as an assistant at Penn under Fran Dunphy. There he would be a part of one of the nation’s biggest turnarounds as the Quakers won 25 games in 2001. Krikorian then accepted an assistant position at another Division I program, Lafayette College in Easton, PA. There he assisted Fran O’Hanlon from 2002-2004. His journey then took him to Annapolis, MD, where he spent two years as an assistant at the United States Naval Academy (2004-2006)…re-uniting with head coach Billy Lange. His time at Navy came to an end when he was named the head coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in 2006, beginning his head coaching career with an amazing four-year transformation of the Mariners.
