Big Story of the Bible #11 – Malachi, the last Old Testament Prophet August 7, 2011 - Malachi 4:1-6

You can look out at 113 stories. You can even travel up to the sky pod at 147 stories. During our time there, a new attraction on the CN Tower

The Bible’s Story Line So Far (G = Genesis) 1 – The One Triune God created everything that exists. (G 1) 2 – The Lord God creates paradise for the first man and woman. (G 2) 3 – The Lord responds with justice and mercy to man’s rebellion. (G 3) 4 -The Lord calls Abraham to step out of his comfort, follow wherever the Lord leads and become a blessing to the whole world. (G 12:1-9) 5 - God graciously overcomes Jacob’s sinful character and transforms him into Israel. (G 32:22-32) 6 – God forms Israel into a nation through the ministry of Moses. (Deuteronomy 4:32-40) 7 – The Lord commands and empowers Joshua to lead Israel in conquering the Promised Land. (Joshua 1:1-9) 8 – God installs David to begin a line of kings leading to the Ultimate King. (2 Samuel 7:1-17) 9 - The Lord God oversees the defeat and exile of His people Israel because of their unfaithfulness to Him. (2 Kings 17) 10 - God stirs up a Persian King to provide for the return of His people. (Ezra 1) Last weekend, we returned from some time away in Southern Ontario. We enjoyed seeing Lori’s family, the +38 heat with humidex of +48 and some of the attractions in the area. One attraction has an exciting new addition. The CN Tower, Canada’s tallest building celebrated 35 years earlier this year. It looks out over Toronto and can be seen from many kilometers away. It is 553 meters or 1815 feet tall and is one of the world’s tallest buildings. From 112 stories up, you can look down through a glass floor.

opened. It’s called the Edgewalk. It is the world’s highest full circle hands free walk on a 5 foot or 1.5 meter wide ledge. It encircles the top of the tower’s main pod. Visitors get to walk in groups of six while attached to an overhead safety rail via a trolley and harness system. Trained Edgewalk guides will encourage participants to lean out over Toronto with nothing but air and the view of Lake Ontario beneath them. During our time there, I was trying to convince Lori’s Mom to try Edgewalk. I thought it would be a very neat and bonding experience for us to lean out over Toronto together. But alas, she would not take me up on my offer to accompany her if she paid for both of us. It only costs $175 after all. How many of you would consider going on the Edgewalk if you had the opportunity? How many would not do it even if they paid you the $175? In making that decision, you likely weighed the benefit of doing something like that with the cost. The benefits might include doing something extreme, experiencing the rush that comes with it, seeing a spectacular unobstructed view and gaining a claim to have done something

A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses. [9] What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. [10] This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.’1 [11] Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. [12] From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force. why some of these things are happening and grant them reason to persevere with the Lord even when it seemed futile. In fact, this prophet’s word will be vital for he will be the last one to speak from the Lord for 400 years. He is the last prophet of the Old Testament. Our text today will take us to the last verses of the Old Testament. Here we will discover the 11th

The LORD paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and esteemed his name. 5) Trust in Him for the first time. The evidence from God’s character and His Word points to a day of judgment despite what many believe today.

10

There will be a day of accounting. Which side will you be on that day? By turning to and trusting in Christ, you will be protected from God’s Holy Wrath. Instead, you will experience release and overcoming. We are unable to escape sinful patterns of conduct without the help of Jesus to set you free. Will you turn from your old life and ways of doing things and turn to trusting Christ? 6) Invest today in what pleases the Lord even if it brings no gain today. Keep the Lord’s commandments – Malachi 4:4. Learn God’s will and ask the Holy Spirit for His power to follow it. 7) Praise the Lord that He sent the messenger and the Messiah into your life before that day of the Lord.
