TOUCH ‘EM ALL - THE TOP STORYLINES THIS WEEK

SERIES INFORMATION

► The Wolverines carry a perfect 10-0 record into the UCF Invitational after sweeping the competition at last weekend’s FAU Kick-Off Classic (Feb. 18-20). The 10-0 start in the best in U-M program history. The Wolverines have outscored their opposition 88-15 this season.

vs. North Florida First Meeting

► Senior RHP Jordan Taylor earned Big Ten Pitcher of the Week accolades for the second straight week -- and for the 10th time in her career -- after posting a 3-0 record with 33 strikeouts and just five hits and no runs allowed at the FAU event. Taylor pitched a complete-game no-hitter against Long Island in the tournament opener and currently boasts a 27 shutout-inning streak. ► Michigan earned explosive hitting throughout its lineup as six starters hit have .350 or better through the season’s opening 10 games. The Wolverines have homered in all but one game this season and have garnered home runs from six different players. Senior first baseman Dorian Shaw already boasts six homers on the year carries a 1.231 slugging percentage. She 10 home runs shy of Michigan’s career record in the category.

vs. Central Florida U-M leads, 4-0 Last Four Meetings: W, 3-1 (9) (2/27/08 in Orlando, Fla.) W, 6-1 (8) (2/24/08 in Orlando, Fla.) W, 7-0 (3/2/05 in Orlando, Fla.) W, 4-1 (3/2/05 in Orlando, Fla.) vs. Missouri Kansas City U-M leads, 1-0 Last Meeting: W, 6-1 (3/8/02 @ Florida State Classic) vs. Villanova First Meeting vs. Maine First Meeting

► With 11 underclassmen, including seven freshmen, the Wolverines will continue to switch up the starting lineup. Four field positions -- catcher, second base, third base and rightfield -- and the designated player slot have seen multiple faces so far.

Fast Break -- With their perfect 10-0 record, the Wolverines boast their greatest start in softball program history. Prior to its current winning stretch, Michigan’s best start came in 1981 when it went 7-0. U-M has outscored its opposition 88-15 through 10 games this season. Week in the Knees -- Senior RHP Jordan Taylor netted her second straight Big Ten Pitcher of the Week award after going 3-0 with 33 strikeouts and just five hits and no runs allowed through 20.1 innings at last weekend’s FAU Kick-Off Classic (Feb. 18-20). With her 10th career Big Ten Pitcher of the Week accolade, the Wolverine ace has been honored more than any other pitcher in league history. Four different pitchers previously received nine weekly citations, including Michigan’s Marissa Young (200003) and Jennie Ritter (2003-06). No-Hit Wonder -- Senior RHP Jordan Taylor registered the seventh no-hitter of her career against Long Island in the FAU Kick-Off Classic opener (Feb. 18), carrying a perfect game into the seventh inning before allowing a leadoff walk. Taylor responded by fanning the game’s final three batters en route to a season-high 13 strikeouts. The no-hitter was the third of Taylor’s career that went the full seven innings. She owns Michigan’s school record in the category, carrying two more than Jennie Ritter (5, 2003-06) in the second spot. Taylor also boasts three career perfect games. Shutdown and Shutout -- Senior RHP Jordan Taylor has recorded shutouts in each of her last three starts and boasts an impressive 27 shutout-inning streak, dating back to the seventh inning against Houston at the season-opening Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational (Feb. 11-13). With her shutout in Michigan’s first game vs. UMass at the FAU Kick-Off Classic (Feb. 18-20), Taylor upped her career shutout total to 33, moving to the fifth spot among Michigan’s all-time leaders in the category, where she is tied with Kelly Kovach (1992-95). Strikeout Sensation -- Senior RHP Jordan Taylor tallied 33 strikeouts through 20.1 innings pitched at the FAU Kick-Off Classic (Feb. 18-20) to move to second place on Michigan’s career strikeout list, upping her career total to 932. Taylor surpassed three-time All-American Marissa Young (927, 200003) and now trails only two-time All-American Jennie Ritter (2003-06), who owns the U-M career strikeout record with 1,205.

Homer is Where the Heart is -- Michigan has hit at least one home run in nine of 10 games this season and have recorded multiple homers in six contests. Six different Wolverine players own home runs this season; senior Alycia Ryan, sophomores Ashley Lane and Amy Knapp and freshman Caitlin Blancard all tallied their first collegiate home runs. Conversely, Michigan’s pitching staff has allowed just one home run this season -- a leadoff solo shot against Houston (Feb. 11). The Shaw Show -- Senior first baseman Dorian Shaw already boasts six home runs on the season, tallying three homers apiece at Michigan’s two tournament appearances, including multi-homer efforts against Houston (Feb. 11) and Long Island (Feb. 18). Shaw ranks second among Michigan’s alltime home run leaders with 52 over her four seasons and sits just 10 homers shy of school record holder Samantha Findlay (62, 2005-08). Stepping into the Spotlight -- Sophomore RHP Stephanie Speierman has already recorded a career high in wins after going 3-0 at the seasonopening Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational (Feb. 11-13) and adding two wins at last weekend’s FAU Kick-Off Classic (Feb. 18-20). Speierman played sparingly last season behind All-Americans Jordan Taylor and Nikki Nemitz. So far this year, she is 5-0 with a 1.95 ERA and 26 strikeouts. USA Softball Player of the Year Watch -- The Wolverines boasted a pair of players -- senior RHP Jordan Taylor and senior first baseman Dorian Shaw -- on the preseason top-50 watch list for the 2010 USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year. Last season, Shaw claimed career highs in every offensive category while Taylor moved in the fifth spot on the all-time wins list (76). A Fresh Start -- After graduating six seniors, five of whom were starters, the Wolverines have brought in seven freshmen. The freshmen make up the largest class on the team. Among the rookies are catchers Caitlin Blanchard and Katie Luetkens, infielders Taylor Hasselbach and Mandy Gardner, and outfielders Nicole Sappingfield, Brandi Virgil, and Lyndsay Doyle. Three’s a Crowd -- Seniors Dorian Shaw and Jordan Taylor, along with junior Amanda Chidester have been chosen as the Wolverines’ tri-captains for the 2011 season. It marks just the third time in program history that three players will hold the distinction.

Save Me -- Senior RHP Jordan Taylor has tallied a save in each of the Wolverines’ tournament appearances this season, upping her career total to 11 and claiming sole possession of Michigan’s career record in the category. She entered the 2011 season tied with Nicole Motycka (2002-05). We’re Going Streaking -- Sophomore second baseman Ashley Lane currently boasts a career-long seven-game hitting streak, hitting .381 (8-for-21) with four homers, two doubles and nine RBI over the stretch. Senior first baseman Dorian Shaw opened the 2011 campaign with a seven-game hitting streak and has tallied at least one hit in nine of Michigan’s 10 games this season. Shaw previously posted an impressive 11-game hitting streak in 2010 -- the longest for a Wolverine hitter in three seasons -- batting .577 (15-for-26) with six homers and 21 RBI over the stretch.

CO AC H I N G S TA F F Carol Hutchins: Head Coach ■ Michigan State (1979) Michigan W-L: 1,166-401-4 (.743) 27th Season Career W-L: 1,189-412-4 (.742) 28th Season Wolverine head coach Carol Hutchins is in her 27th season as head softball coach at the University of Michigan, where she has molded the Wolverines into one of the elite programs in college softball. On December 8, 2006, Hutchins was inducted into the NFCA Hall of Fame in recognition of her coaching success and the indelible mark she has left on both Michigan and collegiate softball. The hall of fame induction kicked off a series of career milestones that would come for Hutchins during the subsequent campaign. On February 28, 2007, she became just the seventh coach in NCAA softball history -- and the sixth in Division I -- to reach 1,000 career wins when the Wolverines swept a mid-week doubleheader at Florida State (4-3, 3-2). Two months later, on April 29, Michigan picked up a home doubleheader sweep vs. Wisconsin (2-1, 2-0) to net Hutchins her 1,000th career win at Michigan, strengthening her position as U-M’s winningest coach in athletic department history. Last season, Michigan used powerful hitting and commanding pitching performances to a 49-8 record, its third straight Big Ten Conference title and its sixth consecutive trip to the NCAA Super Regional. U-M is the first program in Big Ten history to capture three consecutive regular-season titles. “Hutch” has been a part of the Michigan softball program since 1983 when she joined the staff as an assistant coach under Bob DeCarolis. She moved into the head coach position in 1985 and, in each of her 26 head coaching seasons, has continued Michigan’s tradition of softball success. Michigan has never suffered a losing season in all of Hutch’s years with the program. Hutchins has led the Wolverines to the Women’s College World Series in nine of the last 16 seasons, and, in 2005, the Maize and Blue became the first program east of the Mississippi River to claim the NCAA national championship when it defeated UCLA. Michigan’s record-setting 2005 season was the culmination of two decades of dedication for Hutchins and her current and former players and coaches. In that magical season, Michigan set records in a number of categories, including: • First softball national championship • A program-best 65 wins • A program-best 32 consecutive victories (spanning 47 days, from Feb. 13 to March 30) • First No. 1 ranking (March 22) • First No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament • First victory over a top-ranked opponent (6-2 win over No. 1 Arizona) • Michigan’s 103 home runs tied for second on the NCAA all-time single-season home run list The 2005 season took on added significance when Hutchins was selected to be included in a pool of coaches for USA Softball’s Summer Tour. Hutchins helped select both the USA Softball National and Elite teams and was appointed head coach for the Elite Team at the Canada Cup (July 2-10) and made assistant coach for the National Team at the Japan Cup (July 26-August 5). The Elite Team posted a 10-1 record at the Canada Cup to earn the silver medal, while winning the Sendai Series at the Japan Cup. Hutchins’ squads have also captured 13 Big Ten regular-season titles, 13 NCAA Regional crowns and eight Big Ten Tournament championships. She has earned 11 Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year honors, eight NFCA Regional Coach of the Year awards and a pair of NFCA National Coach of the Year honors. The Hutchins-led Michigan coaching staff has garnered Great Lakes Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors in nine of the last 12 seasons (1998, ‘99, 2001, ‘02, ‘04, ‘05, ‘08, ‘09, ‘10) and was named Speedline/NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year for the first time in 2005. Under Hutchins’ guidance, the Michigan softball program has claimed 13 of the last 18 Big Ten regular-season championships and earned trips to 18 NCAA Na-

In 2003, she was chosen as the recipient of the Nell Jackson Award, considered the highest honor the Michigan State Varsity “S” Club can give a female alumna for professional accomplishments and community service. She was also inducted into the Greater Lansing Athletic Hall of Fame in July 2000. Hutchins holds a master’s degree in physical education from Indiana (1981).

For the last several years, every season has brought prestigious milestones to coach Hutchins and the U-M program. On March 31, 2000, Hutchins moved to the top of the all-time win list for University of Michigan coaches -- female or male -- with win No. 638, a 1-0 victory vs. Indiana in the conference seasonopening game. Hutchins became the Wolverines’ all-time wins leader among female sport coaches when she posted U-M win No. 600 with a 6-3 victory vs. Minnesota on April 11, 1999. Hutchins added win No. 700 with a 2-1 win over Oakland University on April 3, 2001. In 2004, the Wolverines posted a ninth-straight 40-win season, advancing to the WCWS for the seventh time in 10 years. During the 2003 season, Hutchins became just the 14th coach in NCAA Division I softball history to reach the 800-win plateau with a 2-1 win over Wisconsin on April 12, 2003. The 2002 Wolverines completed the trifecta as Big Ten regular-season and tournament champions as well as NCAA Regional champs, sending the Maize and Blue to its sixth WCWS. Before becoming Michigan’s third softball coach, Hutchins spent one year as the head coach at Ferris State University (1982). While at Ferris, she led the Bulldogs to the NCAA Division II National Tournament and was selected Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Hutchins was an assistant coach at Indiana University (1981) -- under legendary coach Gayle Blevins -- and at Michigan (1983-84). A 1979 graduate of Michigan State University, Hutchins displayed her athletic talents in both basketball and softball (1976-79), helping the Spartans to the
