TOP STORIES -- Marist has qualified for its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament and ninth in program history. The Red Foxes enter the match-up with Cal having won 10 consecutive matches, and went through the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) portion of its schedule undefeated for the third time in the last four years. -- Marist cleaned up when the MAAC awards were handed out on Wednesday. Freshman Lorenzo Rossi was named the conference’s Player & Rookie of the Year, and Tim Smith was named Coach of the Year. Additionally, the entire Marist singles lineup - Rossi (#1 singles), Joris Van Eck (#2), Nicolas Pisecky (#3), Matt Himmelsbach (#4), Landon Greene (#5) and Will Reznek (#6). The doubles teams of Van Eck/Himmelsbach (#2) and Reznek/Rossi (#3) were also named First Team All-MAAC, and the first doubles pairing of Pisecky and Rhys Hobbs was named Second Team All-MAAC. -- Head Coach Tim Smith, who is in his 14th season at Marist, won his 300th career match on Feb. 27 of this year. -- This is Marist’s second straight trip to the state of California for an NCAA Tournament, and second trip to California this season. Last year, the Red Foxes faced USC in the tournament’s first round. On March 12 of this season, Marist faced Loyola Marymount and lost 4-3. A B O U T

Now in his 14th season at Marist, head coach Tim Smith has taken the Red Foxes to the highest level of success during his time with the team. His teams have won nine Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, and received as many NCAA Tournament bids. In the past 10 years, the men’s teams have compiled a record-setting 84-5 mark in the MAAC. During the 2010-11 regular season, his players have taken the program to a higher level. The team lost just three regular season matches, the fewest since the 2002-2003 team lost just two matches. The teanm was undefeated in conference play for the third straight season and has not lost a MAAc match since the conference championship game in April 2007. Additionally, three Marist players were awarded MAAC Player of the Week three during the spring. The accolade was handed out nine times during the regular season. In Smith’s 14 years at the helm of the Red Foxes, he has compiled a 234-74 record. He has coached the men’s team at Marist to 226 wins, while earning eight as head coach of the women’s tennis team. The team continues to play one of the most competitive tournament schedules in the east, having played the Brown, Columbia, Harvard, USTA Collegiate Open, and Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s (ITA) Tournaments. Dual matches have included matches against Air Force, Boston University, Brown, Dartmouth, St. John’s, Loyola Marymount, and Yale. His teams and players are regularly recognized by the ITA for their academic excellence and have won every tennis award offered by the MAAC. The Red Foxes have competed in nine NCAA Tournaments under Smith. He has taken the program to the University of Texas at Austin, Baylor, LSU, Harvard, Alabama, Mississippi State, USC, and Florida.

Prior to coaching at Marist, Smith registered an 80-4 record over four years at Dutchess Community College and one year at SUNY Oswego for a combined career record of 31478, a winning percentage of .801. While at Dutchess, he coached three nationally ranked teams, two of which finished in the top 10 and three junior college All-Americans. Over the past 25 years he has guided numerous students to receive state and national rankings. In addition, Smith is an ETA-USTA National Team Coach, an ETA Junior Davis Cup Coach and a USPTA Level I teaching professional. Smith was named the USPTA Coach of the Year for the Eastern Section in 1993, 1995 and 2009. Additionally, he was the recipient of the Presidential Sports Award for Tennis. His peers selected him as the MAAC Coach of the Year in 2003. In 2008, he was inducted into the Dutchess County Sports Museum Hall of Fame for his contributions to tennis and the community. Smith graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from SUNY Geneseo, where he lettered in tennis and was captain of the team. He received his Masters of Science from SUNY Albany in Student Personnel in Higher Education and his Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in administration from SUNY New Paltz. A native of Lockport, N.Y., Smith presently resides in Hyde Park, N.Y., with his wife Ann. They have two children, Shannon and Tim Jr. Shannon resides in Enfield, Conn. and Tim lives in Chapel Hill, N.C.

DR. ELLIOT SUSSIN

Dr. Elliot Sussin enters his fourth season beside Head Coach Tim Smith on the Marist men’s tennis staff. Sussin has been living in the Hudson Valley for 53 years and has been involved in tennis for 36 of them. The Syracuse University graduate is a practicing Chiropractor. His practice, which is located in both Rhinebeck and Poughkeepsie, specializes in sports chiropractic injuries and has been a fixture in the area since 1980. A USTA member, Sussin has been a 4.5 and 4.0 player for the past 20 years. He also has been teaching tennis at Kutcher’s Sport’s Academy since 1975. It is also rumored that he regularly beats Coach Smith when they play. Dr. Sussin is the proud father of three daughters and one son. Jennifer graduated from Marist in 2009, and his son Scott plays tennis for John Jay High School.

LOIC SESSAGESIMI

Loic Sessagesimi, a 2010 Marist graduate is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Marist men’s tennis program. He was a four-year starter for the Red Foxes. During his collegiate career, he was a three-time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament Most Outstanding Performer. The Red Foxes won three conference titles in each of his final three seasons at Marist. Sessagesimi was a First Team All-MAAC selection six times, and compiled 142 wins in his career, 75 in singles and 67 in doubles. In addition, he notched the best individual performance in Marist tennis history at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Tournament in the fall of 2009. He reached the Round of 16 before he fell to Haig Schneiderman of Columbia in three sets. An exemplary individual as well, Sessagesimi also won a share of the James E. Pizzani Award at the 2010 Senior Awards Banquet. The award is presented to a male and female who has contributed to the athletic department, both academically and socially, displaying community service and leadership, and has performed above and beyond all expectations. Sessagesimi is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Business Administration. He resides in Pougkheepsie.

Marist Breezes Past Air Force 6-1 In Opening Dual Match Of Spring Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) joined seniors Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) as double winners on the day. Pisecky and Greene teamed up at third doubles to defeat Lucas Marin-Salcedo and Danny Gies 8-2. Pisecky won his third singles match over Marin-Salcedo, while Greene bested Taylor Soster at fifth singles. Both players won 6-0, 6-3. Freshmen Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) rounded out the singles wins at the second and sixth spots in the lineup respectively. Rossi defeated Andy Jackson 6-3, 6-1, while Reznek coasted past Steven Young 6-1, 6-1.

He defeated Roope Kailaheimo at third singles 6-2, 6-2. At third doubles, Pisecky paired with classmate Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) to defeat Francesco Arciuli and Mehmet Duru 8-2. Greene won his fifth singles match over Max Sztabholz, 6-3, 7-5. The other three singles matches each had one tightly contested set. At second singles, freshman Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) got the better of Ivan Rummel. Rossi won 7-5, 6-1. Junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) won by an identical 7-5, 6-1 tally over Arciuli. Himmelsbach played fourth singles.

Marist won the doubles points behind second and third doubles wins. Sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) and Himmelsbach squeaked by Grubbs and Soster 9-7. Pisecky and Greene used an 8-2 win over Marin-Salcedo and Gies at third doubles.

Freshman Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) rounded out the singles victories with a 6-3, 7-5 win over Ryan Schmitz at sixth singles.

Men’s Tennis Sweeps Yale And FDU In Dual Matches

Marist won four singles matches, two of which came against regionally ranked foes. Sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) bested fourth-ranked Marc Powers 6-1, 6-2 and freshman Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) bested #8 John Huang, 6-3, 6-2. Van Eck was at first singles, while Rossi played at the no. 2 spot in the lineup.

Marist swept the Knights and won eight of nine matches en route to the victory. The Red Foxes won all six singles matches.

Senior Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and freshman Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) also posted straight set wins at fifth and sixth singles respectively. Greene defeated Patrick Chase 6-4, 7-5 and Reznek prevailed over Ryan Berman 7-5, 6-4. Marist also won two out of three doubles matches to claim the point. Junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Van Eck bested Powers and Chase 8-6 at first doubles. Rossi and Reznek notched an 8-3 win at third doubles over Daniel Hoffman Huang.

The highlights included Himmelsbach who posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at third singles over Yuri Gricheno. Greene cruised past Mark Hemy at fourth singles 6-0, 6-2 and Reznek triumphed over Dominic Devaux-Lovell 6-2, 6-1.

Greene posted a straight set win over Daniel Simko. The final set scores of the fifth singles match were 6-3, 6-4. Pisecky responded after he dropped the first set with a 2-6, 6-4, 6-0 win at third singles over Sebastian Bustamante.

The Terriers earned the doubles point behind wins at first and second doubles. Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Reznek lost to Josh Friedman and Michael Kopelman 8-5 at first doubles, while Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) and Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) fell 8-6 to Jesse Frieder and Jarred Pendleton. Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) teamed up at third doubles to defeat Bill Kring and Alex Green 8-2.

The Red Foxes also picked up the doubles point on Saturday. Freshmen Lorenzo Rossi (Lubrano, Switzerland) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) defeated Nicholas Bjerke and Simko 8-6. At second doubles sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) and junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) prevailed over Alex Wilton and Bustmante 8-6.

In singles action, each match was decided in straight sets. At first singles, Van Eck fell to Friedman 6-4, 6-4. Rossi handily defeated Friedman 6-1, 6-1 at second singles, while Pisecky struggled against Frieder, losing 6-0, 6-1 at the third spot. In the most closely contested singles match of the day, Greene outlasted Pendleton 7-6 (2), 6-3 in fourth singles. Marcus von Nordheim defeated Alex Hallenbeck at sixth singles 6-3, 6-4. Reznek’s win concluded the singles matches.

Junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) defeated Ken Fukumoto 6-0, 6-2 from the number two spot. Freshmen Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) and Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) both won their singles matchups 6-1, 6-1 in the three and five spots, while senior Marcus von Nordheim (Munich, Germany) won in the four slot 6-2, 6-1 and junior Ian Sims (Stow, Ohio) won 6-3, 6-0 as Marist’s number six.

At first and second singles, Marist lost two matches decided in three sets. Freshman Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) was defeated by Wojciech Starakiewicz 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. In the second slot, sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) lost to Vusa Hove 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. At third singles, senior Nicolas Pisecky fell 6-3, 6-2 to Marcelo Mazzetto. In the most closely contested singles match of the day, Himmelsbach defeated Alex Kalinin 7-5, 6-7 (3), 6-4 at fourth singles. At fifth singles, senior Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) lost to Jason Simon 6-1, 6-3. In the sixth spot, Reznek defeated Travis Zappia 6-1, 7-6 (6).

The Red Foxes lost a hotly contested doubles point, which featured two matches decided by one point. At first doubles, sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) and junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) fell to Joe Michalisin and Erik Kremheller 8-4. At second doubles, Rob Ferrante and Dennis Zlobinksy squeezed past seniors Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) and Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) by a score of 9-8. In the final slot, Rossi and Reznek teamed up to return the favor, defeating Dan Sauter and Bjorn Merinder 9-8.

The duo of Reznek and Rossi defeated Kalinin and Jason Shkodnik at third doubles. In a week in which Marist took on Siena, Fordham, Niagara, and Buffalo, Reznek won each of his four singles and doubles matches. At first singles Van Eck and Himmelsbach lost to Starakiewicz and Hove 8-6. In the second slot, Mazzetto and Zappia defeated Greene and Pisecky 8-4.

Marist won the first three singles slots. Rossi beat Sauter 6-2, 6-4. After losing the first set 3-6 to Michalisin, Van Eck rebounded to win two closely contested sets 6-4, 10-8. At third singles, Pisecky downed Zlobinksy 6-1, 6-4. Himmelsbach dropped Marist’s sole singles match of the afternoon in three sets to Kremheller 5-7, 6-2, 10-4. In the bottom two slots, Greene ousted Ferrante 6-1, 6-4, and Reznek handled Reece Breault 6-2, 6-2. With wins in singles and doubles, Reznek has won his last 10 matches.

The senior duo of Hobbs and Pisecky defeated Chris Damion and Adrien Bailly, 8-6. At second doubles, the scorching freshmen pair of Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) won another closely contested match 8-6 over Antonio Pena and Matthew Gemmell. In the final slot, sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, Netherlands) teamed up with freshman Dalen Klassen (St. Louis, Mo.) to oust Tyler Allen and Jason Sinkoff 8-1. At first and second singles, Rossi and Van Eck won matches handily. Rossi beat Pena 6-2, 6-2, while Van Eck downed Damion 6-2, 6-1. Third singles marked the most competitive singles contest of the day. After losing the first set 4-6 to Bailly, Pisecky rebounded to win the second and third sets 6-2 and 10-8. In the final slot, freshman Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) beat Lucas Coutinho 6-1, 6-4. In doubles, senior Rhys Hobbs (Sydney, Australia) performed well for the second consecutive day, teaming with Pisecky to defeat Forai and Chris Frakes 8-5. Himmelsbach and Van Eck lost to Igel and Huisman 8-6 at second doubles. The freshman pair of Rossi and Reznek defeated Alex Frakes and Coutinho 8-2 at third doubles, continuing their strong play as a doubles team.

Hobbs is frequently paired with fellow senior Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland), which forms a doubles team of significant experience heading toward MAAC tournament. Hobbs and Pisecky downed Tripp Johnson and Rommel Verano at first doubles, 8-5. In the second slot, junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) and senior Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) teamed up to handily defeat Gary Kushnirovich and Alex Holland 8-2. Against Loyola, the third doubles team of freshmen Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) and Will Reznek (Switzerland) earned an 8-0 victory as the duo won its 13th consecutive doubles match.

At first doubles, Hobbs and Pisecky downed Marcus and Warden, 8-5. Greene and Van Eck earned an 8-4 victory over Yoon and Adams at second doubles. Marist Men’s Tennis Wins MAAC Championship For Fourth Straight Year Junior Matt Himmelsbach (Longmeadow, Mass.) was named the championship’s Most Outstanding Performer. Himmelsbach teamed with sophomore Joris Van Eck (Ospel, The Netherlands) to earn an 8-4 doubles victory, and then triumphed 6-2, 6-3 at fourth singles. Seniors Landon Greene (Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Nicolas Pisecky (Lausanne, Switzerland) prevailed 8-6 in the number one spot to earn Marist’s second doubles victory and clinch the match’s first point. The Red Foxes then won all five of singles matches that were completed. In addition to Himmelsbach’s triumph, freshman Lorenzo Rossi (Lugano, Switzerland) won 6-3, 6-3 at first singles; Van Eck prevailed 6-3, 6-1 at second singles; Pisecky was victorious 6-2, 6-4 in the number three slot; and freshman Will Reznek (Toronto, Canada) rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at number six. Van Eck’s victory was the one that gave the Red Foxes their decisive fourth point and clinched the match.
