This Week: The Metro State tennis teams will continue their seasons on Friday and Saturday. The Roadrunners will play at Colorado College on Friday and Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday. Metro State Tennis History: The men’s team has been the class of the RMAC over the past decade or so, capturing four regular season conference championships (2000, 2001, 2008, 2009) and seven RMAC Tournament championships (1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2008, 2009). The Roadrunners have also reached the NCAA Tournament nine times in the past 12 seasons, including a trip to the Elite Eight in 2002. The women’s team had a strong run in the early 2000s, before dropping off later in the decade. The Roadrunners made NCAA Tournament appearances in 2002, 2003 and 2004, including two Elite Eight finishes in 2002 and 2003. Head coach Beck Meares, who was a student-athlete on the three previous NCAA Tournament teams, took the team back to the postseason in 2009. Metro State captured the regular season and conference tournament championships in the RMAC in 2002, 2003 and 2004. RMAC Preseason Poll: The women’s team was picked second in the RMAC preseason coaches poll behind Mesa State, which the Roadrunners defeated during the fall season. The men’s team was picked third behind Western New Mexico and Nebraska-Kearney. Lucio Cangiano was a preseason all-conference pick for the men. Temporary Home: Due to construction on Metro State’s campus, the team will be forced to practice and play off-campus during the spring of 2011. The Roadrunners will practice at Meadow Creek’s indoor facility and play its home matches at Gates Tennis Center in Cherry Creek. Head Coach Beck Meares • Third year as head coach Beck Meares will begin her third season as the men’s and women’s tennis head coach at Metro State in 2010-11 and her seventh year as a member of the coaching staff. In her second season in 2010, Meares guided an injury-plagued men’s team to a 6-10 mark, including 2-4 in the RMAC. The Roadrunners lost their No. 1 singles player to a season-ending injury in February after he reached the quarterfinals of the ITA Central Region Tournament in the fall. Meares’ team spent the rest of the season trying to fill those shoes as each player had to move up a spot in the lineup. Despite the injury, Georgie Perez, who took over at No. 1 singles, earned first team All-RMAC honors for singles and teamed with Ross Gelina for first team honors in doubles as well. Gelina was a second team singles selection. The women’s team posted a 7-12 record and was 2-4 in the RMAC after losing three of its top four singles players from 2009. No. 1 singles player Yerica Pessoa was named first team All-RMAC in 2010 and she teamed with April Hirad for first team honors in doubles. Hirad was a first team Academic All-RMAC selection as well. In Meares’ first year as head coach in 2009, she was named RMAC Men’s Coach of the Year and led both the men’s and women’s teams to the NCAA Tournament. For the men, it was their fourth straight trip to the postseason, while the women made their first appearance since Meares was a student-athlete on the 2004 squad. Meares helped the men to a 17-5 overall record and a perfect 8-0 conference record as the Roadrunners won their second straight regular season RMAC championship and third straight RMAC Tournament championship. After defeating Colorado State-Pueblo in the preliminary round of the postseason, Metro State fell to Drury (Mo.) 5-3 in the round of 16. Meares’ men’s lineup included RMAC Player of the Year Sascha Ruckelshausen and all six regulars were named all-conference. Ruckelshausen was also named RMAC Academic Player of the Year. The women’s team went 14-15 overall in 2008-09, but the team had won a total of just 11 matches over the four previous years. Meares helped the team finish 4-4 in the RMAC and reach the conference tournament championship after upsetting top seed Mesa State in the semifinals. The 2009 squad featured RMAC Freshman of the Year Yerica Pessoa and a pair of other all-conference student-athletes. Three of Meares’ players were also named Academic All-RMAC. As an assistant coach for four years from 2004-08, Meares developed the strength and conditioning programs for both teams and assisted with scheduling, recruiting and other day-to-day responsibilities for Roadrunner tennis. She helped lead Metro State to the RMAC men’s regular-season and tournament championships in 2008 and the tournament crown in 2007. A great teacher of the game, Meares spent the summers of 2006 and 2007 in New York as a teaching pro at Westhampton Country Club. She has also worked as an assistant teaching pro at the Denver Country Club, teaching players of all ages and abilities. Meares played four years of tennis at Metro State and led the Roadrunners to RMAC championships in 2002, 2003 and 2004. She earned first-team all-RMAC honors at No. 1 singles and at No. 1 doubles with her sister, Jessica Meares, as a 2004 senior and was also named RMAC Player of the Year. Also during her senior season, Meares was ranked in the top 30 nationally in singles, while she was No. 12 in the doubles rankings. Meares earned all-RMAC honors in both singles and doubles all four years of her career. Meares and Metro State won the regional title in 2002 and 2003, while the 2003 team advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight. Meares earned a bachelor’s degree in adult fitness exercise science from Metro State in May 2005.
