MEET THE SPEAKERS Barry Flinchbaugh—Keynote Speaker Dr. Flinchbaugh represents the agricultural community through his active participation in the development of U.S. agricultural policy. His service on numerous national task forces, boards of directors, and advisory groups has allowed him to provide input on domestic food and agriculture policy. He served as Chairman of the Commission on 21st Century Production Agriculture authorized in the 1996 FAIR ACT.
Steve Swaffar Steve Swaffar has worked for Kansas Farm Bureau since November of 2000 as Natural Resources Director. Steve and his staff address natural resource policy and technical issues for their farmer and rancher members. Steve assists agricultural producers to assess and find solutions to environmental and conservation issues on their farms and ranches; works with state and federal agency staff on regulatory actions; provides advice to farmers about wildlife management; and provides assistance with various permits required by regulatory agencies. He also is works with the Kansas legislature and lobbies on natural resources and environmental bills.
Dan O’Brien - Kansas State University Daniel O’Brien was raised on a grain and livestock farm in south central Nebraska. He received bachelors and masters degrees in Agricultural Economics from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. After completing his Ph.D. at Iowa State, he worked as the Extension Agricultural Economist at the Northwest Research and Extension Center in Colby and was Northwest Area Extension Administrative Director starting in 2003 before returning to his Extension Agricultural Economist position in January 2007. His ongoing extension and applied research interests and efforts are in the areas of a) grain market supply-demand analysis, bioenergy impacts and price-income risk management strategies, b) grain industry market structure, conduct and performance – focusing on grain handling and transportation issues, and c) economic analysis of irrigated and dryland cropping systems, and associated cropland leasing arrangements.
2012 Steve Hessman Steve Hessman grew up farming and raising cattle in Southwest Kansas. He graduated from Fort Hays State University with a BS in Agriculture. He has experience in Cow-calf and Backgrounding operations, along with summer and winter grazing programs. Steve raised irrigated and dryland crops including wheat, corn, grain sorghum, soybeans, sunflowers, alfalfa, brome and other forage crops used for grazing, silage and hay. In 1990 he took a job with KDA/ USDA Market News reporting the Kansas Hay Market, he was instrumental in starting the Kansas Sunflower Market Report, has shared in reporting livestock markets and covered the Pratt Livestock Auction. Present, primary duties include, doing the Kansas Hay Market Report, Kansas Sunflower Report, Western Kansas Grain Market Report and numerous radio market reports.

Glynn Tonsor- Kansas State University Glynn T. Tonsor joined the Dept. of Agricultural Economics at Kansas State University in March 2010 as an Assistant Professor. He obtained his Ph.D. from KSU in 2006 and was an Assistant Professor in the Dept. of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University from May 2006 to March 2010. Glynn's current efforts are primarily devoted to a range of integrated research and extension activities with particular focus on the cattle/beef and swine/pork industries. He has broad interests and experiences which span issues throughout the meat supply chain. Through both applied research and firsthand knowledge with livestock production, Glynn has expertise in topics including animal identification and traceability, animal welfare and handling, food safety, and price risk management and analysis.
Troy Dumler - Kansas State University Troy Dumler is a K-State Extension Agricultural Economist in southwest Kansas. A native of Kansas with B.S. and M.S. degrees in agricultural economics from Kansas State University, Troy has developed an Extension program centered on farm management and agricultural policy. In addition to continued work in cropping systems profitability, since the passage of the 2008 Farm Bill, he has focused much of his attention on analyzing how new commodity programs in the bill will impact farmers and ranchers.
