FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY TIGER BASEBALL 2012 POSTSEASON NOTES Fort Hays State Notes Tigers at the MIAA Tournament: This is the fifth year out of six that Fort Hays State has qualified for the MIAA Tournament since beginning play in the MIAA in 2007. This is the second consecutive year that the Tigers have qualified under second-year head coach Steve Johnson and third consecutive year overall. The No. 6 seed this year is the lowest the Tigers have ever had at the MIAA Tournament and the sixth-place finish ties the lowest the Tigers have ever finished in the MIAA as they also finished in that place in 2009. That was the only year the Tigers did not make the MIAA Tournament, since the tournament field was still four teams at that time. The tournament expanded to six teams in 2010. Deepest Run at the Conference Tournament: Fort Hays State has twice played three games at the MIAA Tournament in 2008 and 2010. The Tigers went 1-2 in double elimination format in 2008, dropping their first game to Emporia State before defeating Missouri Western in the first elimination game that year. They lost to Central Missouri in the second elimination game that year, just one win away from being just one of two teams remaining. In 2010, the Tigers won the first-round single elimination game against Nebraska-Omaha before getting beat twice in a row by Emporia State and Missouri Southern to get eliminated in the double-elimination portion of the tournament. Last Year at the MIAA Tournament: Fort Hays State fell in the opening round single-elimination game last year to Missouri Western by a score of 5-4 as the Griffons scored three times in the top of the ninth to win a game the Tigers led 4-0 in after five innings. Brett Macari suffered his only blown save of the season after converting 12-of-12 opportunities prior to that. Five of the starting position players from the FHSU team are regular starters this season. Turning Point: Fort Hays State had an awful start to the season, going just 2-10 in its first 12 games. The Tigers reached a turning point when they ran off six straight wins with a three-game sweep at Lincoln, followed by a win over Bethany College and then took three of four games against Central Missouri, the No. 1 team in the nation at the time, in Hays. The Tigers went 24-12 after the 2-10 start to the year. The six game win streak was the longest of the season for FHSU. Against Possible Opponents at the MIAA Tournament: Fort Hays State opens the MIAA Tournament with Missouri Southern on Thursday in a singleelimination game. The Tigers are 0-1 against the Lions at the MIAA Tournament all-time, with that only loss in 2010 by a score of 6-2. That loss eliminated the Tigers from the tournament that year. As far as other possible opponents, FHSU is 0-2 against Central Missouri all-time in the MIAA Tournament, 1-1 against Missouri Western, has never met Washburn at the MIAA Tournament, and 0-2 against Emporia State. Fort Hays State's only wins ever at the tournament were against Missouri Western and Nebraska-Omaha. Triple Crown Numbers: Fort Hays State junior outfielder Ryan Busboom nearly led the MIAA in all three triple crown categories at the end of the regular season slate. Busboom enters the tournament with a .392 batting average, which ranks fourth in the MIAA just 14 points behind conference leader Ben Cox of Central Missouri, and leads the MIAA in home runs with 16 and RBI with 64. Busboom has twice been named the MIAA Hitter of the Week, which occurred April 10 and May 1. Busboom also leads the MIAA in slugging percentage at .762, total bases with 138, and is tied for the lead in hits with 71. He ranks highly in runs scored (48, 5th) and doubles (17, T-4th). Busboom ranks 7th nationally in home runs and RBI and 8th nationally in slugging percentage and total bases. Smith Climbing in Career Categories: Fort Hays State senior outfielder Nash Smith ranks highly in several offensive categories all-time at FHSU. For his career, Smith has a .351 batting average with 53 doubles, 8 triples, 31 home runs, 136 RBI, 159 runs scored, and 39 stolen bases. Entering today, he ranks 2nd in career doubles, 7th in career triples, 6th in career home runs, 8th in career RBI, 7th in career runs scored, 2nd in career hit-by-pitch (28), 5th in career sacrifices (17), and 4th in career total bases (372). So far this year, Smith is hitting .372, which is third-best on the team, tied for second in home runs on the team and MIAA with 10, and is tied for the MIAA lead in doubles with 18. He leads the team in runs scored with 52, which is second in the MIAA, and ranks second on the team in RBI with 43, which is tied for sixth in the MIAA. Macari a Steady Closer for the Tigers: Fort Hays State senior Brett Macari has served at the closer on the mound for two seasons since transferring from Butler (Kan.) Community College. Macari went 12-of-13 in save opportunities last year, starting the year 12-of-12 before suffering his first blown save at the MIAA Tournament. Macari ranked second in the MIAA in saves in 2011 and posted the third-most in a single season at FHSU. So far this year, he has seven saves to his credit and has matched his 4-1 record from a year ago. Last year he picked up all four of his wins in a 4-1 record as a starter, but this year has accumulated his record all in appearances out of the pen. Macari has just two blown saves this year, but one of those resulted in a win. He reeled off five straight saves in five straight appearances from April 7 to April 20 and has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week once this year. He has 19 saves in his career at FHSU, which is second on the all-time list at FHSU only behind Nate Field (1997-1998) who had 23 and went on to pitch in Major League Baseball. The top three saves leaders all-time at FHSU all were two year players, which also includes Mat Atkinson who is third on the list with 17 saves from 2009-2010. Potent Offense: Fort Hays State has one of the top offenses in the MIAA and nation. The Tigers enter the tournament second in the MIAA in batting average at .332 and lead the MIAA in hits (513), doubles (106), home runs (53), RBI (313), slugging percentage (.516), and total bases (796). Nationally the Tigers rank 12th in batting average, 29th in hits, 17th in doubles, 4th in home runs, and 5th in slugging percentage. Pitching and Defensive Struggles: With as good as the Tigers have been on offense, the pitching struggles have held the Tigers back a bit this year. FHSU is ninth in the MIAA in ERA at 6.86 and ninth in runs allowed with 353. The Tigers are second-to-last in walks allowed (180) and home runs allowed (50) and lead the MIAA in wild pitches with 54. FHSU has also struggled in the field, ranking eighth in fielding percentage (.957) and fourth in errors committed with 72. The Tigers have allowed the second-most stolen bases in the conference this year with 82 and have thrown out runners attempting to steal just 14 times.

FORT HAYS STATE UNIVERSITY TIGER BASEBALL 2012 POSTSEASON NOTES Steve Johnson - Head Coach Steve Johnson is in his second year as head coach of the baseball program at Fort Hays State University. In his first season with FHSU in 2011, Johnson guided the Tigers to a 28-23 record, a fourth-place finish in the MIAA, and an appearance at the MIAA Tournament. Johnson came to FHSU from Butler (Kan.) Community College, where he was the head coach for seven years. While at Butler, Johnson compiled a record of 235-155. He led the program to at least 30 wins in his last six seasons and an NJCAA World Series appearance in 2006. The Grizzlies were co-champions of the Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference Western Division three times in Johnson’s tenure, including the 2010 season. He was twice named the Jayhawk Western Division Coach of the Year (2005 and 2007) and was the NJCAA Central District and ABCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2006. In seven years at Butler, Johnson coached five all-region selections and 34 all-conference selections. Four of his players were selected in the Major League Baseball Draft. Six former players went on to play professional baseball. He also had six players earn NJCAA Academic All-American honors. Prior to becoming the head coach at Butler Community College, Johnson spent eight years as an assistant with three different successful programs. His last two years (2002 and 2003) as an assistant were at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, where he was the pitching coach and chief recruiter. He helped the Indians to the 2002 Southland Conference Championship. He was assistant coach at Barton (Kan.) Community College for four years (1998-2001), helping the Cougars average 30 wins per season in his time with the program. Johnson started his collegiate coaching career as an assistant at Fort Hays State for two years (1996 and 1997). He helped the Tigers to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship and finish runner-up in the school’s first ever NCAA Division II West Regional appearance. In his eight years as an assistant, he coached 10 pitchers that went on to play professional baseball, with two making it to the Major League level. Combining the three institutions together, Johnson had a record Coach Johnson vs. Opponents of 262-190 as an assistant coach.
