Quick Hits • McNeese State will be kicking off its 69th season of football... 7th under head coach Matt Viator... 41st as a member of the Southland Conference • McNeese is the dean of the Southland Conference, having joined the league in 1972 • The Cowboys are 3-3 under Viator in season openers - 3-0 vs. non-FBS members and 0-3 against FBS teams • Cowboys have won 13 Southland championships - more than three times more than the next current league foe • The team played in the 1997 and 2002 FCS national championship game - falling 10-9 to Youngstown State in 1997 and 34-14 to Western Kentucky in 2002 • The Pokes have made 14 FCS playoff appearances, more than double the amount of the next Southland team • This will be the first meeting between McNeese State and Middle Tennessee on the football field. The two schools have met six other times on the basketball court (3-3) with the last game coming in the 1987-88 season when the Cowboys dropped an 84-69 decision in Lake Charles • McNeese is 2-12 against FBS schools since 2000 • The two wins are against Sun Belt Conference members (W 24-19 at Louisiana-Monroe, 2002; W 38-17 at Louisiana-Lafayette, 2007) • McNeese/Tennessee connection has Cowboys defensive line coach Manny Michel being a graduate of Tennessee Tech (1984) where he started his coaching career as a graduate assistant. Michel is beginning his 29th year as a football coach • MTSU has three coaches familiar with Southland football - defensive line coach Joe Cauthen coached the DL at Stephen F. Austin in 1997-98; co-defensive coordinator and cornerback coach Steve Ellis coached six seasons at Nicholls State (2003-08) including being the Colonels DC from 2006-08; and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Buster Faulkner was the QB coach at Central Arkansas in 2009 • Junior quarterback Cody Stroud has been named the starting QB for McNeese. Stroud threw for 2,009 yards and 9 tds last season and will enter the season ranked 11th on the team’s all-time career passing yards list with 2,595 • Senior free safety Malcolm Bronson will be looking to become just the sixth player in Southland history to received first team all-league honors four straight years. If he does, he’ll join his uncle and former San Francisco 49ers star Zach Bronson as the only two from McNeese to achieve the feat. • McNeese’s offensive line is made up of six players that have seen significant starting experience, including three that started all 11 games last year. Returning to the unit is senior center Miguel Gauthreaux who missed all of last season when he injured his knee in preseason practice. Gauthreaux earned first team all-SLC honors in 2010 after he started all 11 games and was granted a sixth year by the NCAA due to his injury.

“Blue Wall” Defensive Line Making a Comeback

• Preseason all-SLC defensive DT Pat Williams will anchor the line that returns two starters • Four projected starters - Williams, Chris Loveless, Michael Ware, Everett Ellefsen combined for four sacks and 13 tackles for a loss last season • Williams led the team with three sacks and was second with seven TFLs • Team ranked 4th in the league in rushing defense (137.2 ypg) last season and was third in total defense (331.6 ypg) • The original “Blue Wall” made its debut in the 1978 season when that defensive unit allowed just 9.8 points and 259 total yards per game

Brotherly Love in the Defense

• Senior all-American free safety Malcolm Bronson and his backup, brother Ryan Bronson, will be wrapping up a three-year playing career together. Ryan still has one year remaining to play. • The brothers are the nephews of former McNeese and San Francisco 49ers standout Zach Bronson • Malcolm led the team with 90 tackles and three interceptions last season while Ryan had nine stops while playing in nine games

McNeese’s Cajun Kicker

• True freshman place kicker Jean Breaux will likely be called something different every time he lines up to kickoff • Jean... not John... not Gene... it’s Jean (sz-OH-n) where the J is pronounced with the SZ sound as in “vision”
