THE FACTS: ACU vs. TARLETON STATE Key Facts: The Wildcats and Texans have played a 33 times since 1920 with the Wildcats holding a 19-10-4 advantage. ... The Wildcats rallied in the final minutes of last year’s game to pull out a 27-24 win over the Texans in the season-opener for both teams in Stephenville. ... That win extended ACU’s dominance in the series to six wins in the last eight meetings dating back to 2004. ... Tarleton State dominated the series from the late 1990s through 2003, winning each year from 1998-2003 by an average score of 28-13. ... The injury bug continues to hit the Wildcats hard. Having already lost both receiver Andrew Richards (left knee) and linebacker Chris Summers (right knee) to season-ending knee injuries, the Wildcats suffered a few more serious injuries in Saturday's loss against the Javelinas. ... Strongside linebacker Blake Rudd – who started in Saturday's Kingsville game – is out for the season after suffering a broken leg. His backup, sophomore Cy Wilson, is out at least five weeks with a broken bone in his right wrist. ... Also, safety / linebacker Lynn Grady is questionable for Saturday’s game against the Texans after separating his right shoulder twice during the loss to the Javelinas. He came back in and played after each separation. ... Sophomore Jonathan Parker is the probable starter at tight end for the Wildcats in Saturday's game against Tarleton State. Parker had been splitting time between fullback and tight end, but head coach Ken Collums said Monday that he will likely move Parker into the backfield on a full-time basis. That will leave the starting tight end spot up for grabs between sophomore transfer Noah Cheshier and redshirt freshman Jamie Walker. Those two will battle throughout this week in practice to determine the starter for the game against the Texans.

He needs just 2,446 passing yards to top 12,000 for his career, and will need just 13 more after that to become the all-time leading passer in LSC and ACU history. Here’s how Gale has fared game-by-game in his career:

ACU senior quarterback Mitchell Gale completed just 13 passes against Kingsville, the fewest completions of his career in a game when he's played all four quarters. His previous career low was 14 (14 of 25) in the 2009 loss to West Texas A&M. ... Gale’s completion percentage of 41.9 percent against Kingsville is the second-worst in a game in his career behind the 39.0 completion percentage (16 of 41) in ACU's 13-6 loss to Tarleton State on Oct. 24, 2009. ... Gale didn’t throw a touchdown pass in Saturday's game, snapping a streak of 24 straight games in which he had thrown a touchdown pass. Prior to Saturday night's game, the last time Gale failed to throw a touchdown pass in a game in which he started was Nov. 21, 2009, when the Wildcats lost to Northwest Missouri State, 35-10, in the second round of the NCAA Division II playoffs. ... The Wildcats’ offensive output of 224 yards against the Javelinas is their worst in a game since the 164-yard output in a 19-14 win over Northwest Missouri State on Aug. 27, 2009. That game – carried live on CBS College Sports Network – featured two stingy defenses and an ACU offense trying to replace the triumvirate of Billy Malone, Bernard Scott and Johnny Knox. ... Gale finished his regular-season career against the Javelinas with a 3-1 mark while completing 101 of 158 passes for 1,251 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception. That interception came on the Wildcats' first drive when Quincy Williams intercepted a tipped pass at the Kingsville 24-yard line. ... The Wildcats played the game without running back Charcandrick West, who sat out with a groin injury, and they definitely missed his explosiveness. ACU finished with just 87 yards on the ground and 65 of those came on a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Darrell Cantu-Harkless. Redshirt freshman Travis Tarver started in West’s place and gained just 21 yards on 12 carries, while Marcel Threat – last week's leading rusher with 88 yards against McMurry – had just three yards on one carry. Wide receiver Taylor Gabriel had ACU’s only other carry, going seven yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. ... ACU had six three-and-outs in the game against the Javelinas, and in the third quarter the Wildcats ran just five plays for three total yards and only possessed the ball for 1 minute, 9 seconds.

SCOUTING THE WILDCATS’ DEFENSE One week after collecting 10 sacks against McMurry, the ACU defense managed just two sacks against the Javelinas. Nick Richardson – who had six sacks against McMurry and was named the LSC Defensive Player of the Week and the d2football.com national Defensive Player of the Week – had one sack of Nate Poppell for a five-yard loss, and Rob Boyd had the other sack of Poppell for a six-yard loss. ... After watching Jonathan Woodson run for 228 yards and score four touchdowns – including runs of 87 and 80 yards and a 60-yard touchdown catch – the ACU defense limited Woodson to a meager 27 yards rushing on 15 carries (1.8 yards per carry) and 14 yards on three catches. ... After allowing just 12 yards rushing in last week's win over McMurry, the Wildcats gave up just 48 yards on the ground against the Javelinas. ACU’s rush defense ranks sixth in the country at 30.0 yards per game, and it ranks third in the country in sacks per game at 6.0. ... The Wildcats' pass defense, however, has allowed 301 yards against McMurry and 372 against the Javelinas and ranks 142nd in the country at 336.50 yards per game. ... The Wildcats had several players leave the field with injuries Saturday against the Javelinas, including linebacker Cy Wilson (right wrist), linebacker Blake Rudd (leg) and safety Lynn Gray (right shoulder). The severity of those injuries and their possible time out will be known late Monday.
MISCELLANEOUS NOTES The last time the Wildcats lost a home game in the regular season was Oct. 17, 2009, when the then-No. 1-ranked Wildcats dropped a 32-21 decision to unranked West Texas A&M. ACU’s next home game was Oct. 31, 2009, against Texas A&M-Kingsville, a game that ACU won 47-35 to start the 12-game home field winning streak that was snapped in Saturday's loss to Kingsville. ... The Javelinas’ win over ACU snapped the Wildcats’ eight-game winning streak against Kingsville. The Javelinas' last win over ACU prior to Saturday night was a 10-7 decision over the Wildcats in 2003 at Shotwell Stadium. The next season the Wildcats went to Kingsville and knocked off the No. 2 Javelinas, 17-10, to snap a 20-game losing streak to the Javelinas. That win turned out to the final victory in the five-year career of former ACU head coach Gary Gaines, who finished his tenure with a 21-30 record.

Ken Collums, the architect of Abilene Christian University’s record-setting offense since 2005, is the 19th head football coach in ACU history. ACU director of athletics Jared Mosley made the announcement Friday, Dec. 23, 2011, ending a week-long search process that was set off on Dec. 16 when former head coach Chris Thomsen resigned to take a job as an assistant coach at Arizona State University. Collums – who has never been a head coach – just completed his seventh season as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator and believes now is the right time to step into the head coaches’ role. “I’m honored and excited to be the head football coach at ACU,” he said. “I have the unique perspective to have been part of laying the foundation of this program seven years ago, and I’ve been able to see it grow and develop into what it is today. This is truly a special place and a special situation, and I’m ready to be the head coach and keep this program moving forward.” Collums – the FootballScoop.com D2 Coordinator of the Year in 2010 – has presided over and called the plays for some of the most dominant offensive units in NCAA Division II history. Over the last seven seasons, the Wildcats have averaged 468.4 yards of offense and 39 points per game, while achieving near perfect balance in run-pass play selection. In the 82 games the Wildcats have played since 2005, they've run the ball 2,874 times and thrown it 2,857 times while gaining 38,412 yards in those games Since he re-joined the ACU coaching staff prior to the 2005 season, Collums’ offenses have ranked among the best in the nation. The Wildcats have ranked in the top seven in NCAA Division II football in total offense five times in the last seven years, including first in 2008, second in 2007, third in 2011 and fourth in 2006. The pass offense has ranked third twice and sixth twice, and the rushing offense has ranked as ninth in the nation (2008). The Wildcats’ scoring offense under Collums has ranked first in both 2007 and 2008 (when ACU scored a combined 1,267 points in 25 games), second in 1010 and sixth in 2006. Under Thomsen and Collums, “ball security” became one of the catch phrases surrounding the program, and the Wildcats have turned the ball over only 122 times in seven seasons, including just eight times in 2010 and nine in 2006. In his 82 games as the Wildcats' offensive coordinator, ACU has scored between 30 and 39 points in 18 games, between 40-49 points 22 times, between 50-59 points 14 times, between 60-69 points three times, 70-79 points twice and hit 93 in a 2008 NCAA Division II playoff game against West Texas A&M. In 2007 and 208, Collums called the plays for one of the greatest offensive units in the history of college football. Under his guidance, ACU scored 1,267 points (50.7 ppg) and racked up 13,772 yards of total offense (550.9 ypg) in the 25 games covering those two seasons and ACU went 21-4 in those games, won the Lone Star Conference championship in 2008 and saw Bernard Scott win the Harlon Hill Award as the top player in NCAA Division II football and Sam Collins win the Gene Upshaw Award as the top lineman in NCAA Division II football. In the greatest offensive game in LSC and ACU history, Collums led ACU to 93 points in a 93-68 win over West Texas A&M in the second round of the 2008 NCAA Division II playoffs. The Wildcats posted a school-record 810 yards of total offense and scored touchdowns on 13 of 15 possessions on their way to a remarkable 25-point win over the Buffaloes. ACU’s offense set 29 NCAA Division II single-game, NCAA Division II playoff single-game, LSC and ACU records in the record-setting rout. In 2007, ACU became the first program in the history of NCAA football to boast a 3,500-yard passer (Billy Malone), 2,000-yard rusher (Bernard Scott) and two 1,000-yard receivers (Johnny Knox and Jerale Badon) in the same season. In fact, ACU’s offense in

2008 set or tied or was part of 78 NCAA, LSC or Wildcat single-game, season or career records. “When I look back at our offense over the last seven years, the No. 1 thing I’m proud of is our consistency,” Collums said. “I tell our guys all the time that it doesn't matter what we do – whether we’re throwing it or running it – we have to protect the ball. And at times over those seven years we have been the best at protecting the ball. And that comes from total buy-in from players, and that makes me proud because that lets me know that they're buying into what we’re telling them. “All of that – ALL of that – starts with one word, and that’s ‘trust’,” Collums continued. “It starts with the head coach trusting his staff to let them do what needs to be done, and that funnels down to the players. Chris (Thomsen) had trust in me and the rest of the offensive staff to allow us to do what needed to be done. And once you have that trust, you’re able to call plays and feel good about them, no matter the situation.” But for Collums and Mosley, the football program is about more than wins and losses, yards gained and points scored. When Thomsen was hired as the head coach in 2005 and brought his brother-in-law (Collums) with him as the offensive coordinator, the two charted an intentional course that would lead them to the belief that turning out men of character ranked as high on their priority list as did winning games. A few years ago, the football team began taking a weekend break during summer two-a-days and either attending a PromiseKeepers event or, as it has done the last three years, hosting its own weekend retreat where nothing about football is mentioned, only how to make ACU’s players men of real character. And each Friday night during the season the team meets to listen to speakers talk about real-life experiences that have nothing to do with the game on the field. “I wholeheartedly believe in what we do here and the
product we put out,” Collums said. “We win games and we take these young men and develop them and help them grow into men of impact who will positively influence their future families and, ultimately, society.” Collums was ACU’s quarterbacks / wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator from 1996-99 before returning to his alma mater, Central Arkansas, prior to the 2000 season. While coaching at Central Arkansas, Collums led the Bears to some of the greatest offensive seasons in school history. Collums coached an offensive attack that averaged 300 yards passing per game in three of his last four seasons at UCA. The Bears were the nation’s top passing team in 2001, averaging 373 yards per game. In 2002 – Collums’ first year as offensive coordinator – the Bears were No. 8 nationally in points per game (37.5), No. 3 in passing yards per game (310.5) and No. 9 in total offense (446 yards per game). In 2004, UCA featured a balanced attack that racked up 38 points per game (No. 14), 477.7 yards per game (No. 6), 269 passing yards per game (No. 19) and 208.5 rushing yards per game (No. 26). As a freshman quarterback at Central Arkansas, Collums led the Bears to the 1991 NAIA national championship. In four seasons as the starter, he directed his team to a combined record of 30-8-3. Collums graduated from Central Arkansas in 1995 with a bachelor of science in kinesiology. He received his master’s in kinesiology from Central Arkansas in 1998. A native of Vernon, Collums played for the Vernon Lions of former coach Leo Brittain, leading his team to a 29-2-1 record in his final two seasons as the starting quarterback. Collums led Vernon to the Class 3A state title in 1990. Collums and his wife, Robyn, have two children, a daughter, Anna, and a son, Layne.

Sophomore end Richardson’s six sacks lead No. 10 Wildcats to 51-0 victory over War Hawks
ACU offense can’t get untracked as Wildcats drop LSC opener to #24 Javelinas, 16-13
ABILENE – Sophomore defensive end Nick Richardson had six of his team's nine sacks as 10th-ranked Abilene Christian University introduced McMurry University to NCAA Division II with a 51-0 win in both teams' season opener Saturday night in Shotwell Stadium. Richardson’s six sacks tied the ACU record set by James Henderson in 1997, and led a Wildcat defense that held McMurry to 301 total yards, all but 12 yards of it through the air, broke up six passes and recovered a fumble. Warhawk quarterback Jake Mullin completed 37 of 59 passes for 289 yards, and was intercepted once. His counterpart, pre-season NCAA Division II Player of the Year Mitchell Gale, completed 19 of 28 passes for 290 yards and one TD in three quarters of play. Both teams played a scoreless first quarter before a crowd of 11,337, but ACU scored on seven straight possessions to start the second quarter. Charcandrick West’s 13-yard run, redshirt freshman Travis Tarver’s 2-yard dive and a 9-yard pass from quarterback Gale to wide receiver Taylor Gabriel powered the Wildcats to a 21-0 halftime lead. ACU opened the second-half scoring with a 25-yard field goal from Morgan Lineberry. The Wildcats’ next drive was a short one, thanks to McMurry turning the ball over on downs at its own 10-yard line. Two plays later, Gabriel scored on a 7-yard end-around. ACU scored on its next drive when Marcel Threat ran 12 yards for a TD, and tacked on another TD with Tarver's 5-yard run at the end of the third quarter. Threat, a sophomore transfer from Central Arkansas, scored his second rushing TD with a 12-yarder in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats rolled up 461 yards of offense, helped by Gabriel’s seven catches for 108 yards and Threat's 88 yards of rushing. Tarver caught two passes for 54 yards and ran nine times for 38 yards. Darian Hogg had four catches for 50 yards. ACU’s 51 was the second most points scored by the Wildcats in a season-opener since they beat McMurry 53-20 in 1971, and their first shutout since a 21-0 blanking of Eastern New Mexico in 2006. McMurry and ACU last played 41 years ago, but the cross-town rivalry featured 39 games from 1930-71, with the Wildcats holding a 24-15 edge. The War Hawks were playing their first year in Division II, while the Wildcats are starting their last before a move in 2013 to the Division I FCS-affiliated Southland Conference. The Wildcats – who won their fifth straight season-opener – host longtime Lone Star Conference rival Texas A&M-Kingsville next Saturday at 6 p.m.
ABILENE – Matt Stoll kicked three field goals, Nate Poppell threw for 372 yards and defensive-minded Texas A&M-Kingsville held off No. 9 Abilene Christian University, 16-13, on Saturday night at Shotwell Stadium. The No. 24 Javelinas improved to 2-0 on the season, and 1-0 in the Lone Star Conference South Division, while ACU fell to 1-1 and 0-1 in the LSC. The win ended ACU's eight-year winning streak in the 47-year series, which Kingsville dominated from 1984-2003, and snapped the Wildcats' 12-game regular season home winning streak. Kingsville’s fierce defense held preseason NCAA Division II player of the year Mitchell Gale to his lowest output in three years, and broke a stretch of 23 straight games in which he had thrown a touchdown. Gale, a senior, completed 13 of 31 passes for 137 yards. After scoring 51 points in its season-opener last week against McMurry, ACU could only muster 11 first downs and 224 yards of offense against the Javelinas. ACU held the Javelinas’ vaunted running game to only 48 yards – and 1,000-yard rusher Jonathan Woodson to 27 yards – but had no answer for Poppell, who completed 33 of 50 passes and one TD. Wide receiver Taylor Gabriel’s second 7-yard end-around scoring run in as many weeks staked the Wildcats to a 6-0 lead on the last play of the first quarter. Kingsville answered back when Nate Poppell threw a 22-yard TD pass to Robert Armstrong on the first drive of the second quarter. The Javelinas padded their lead to 10-6 when Matt Stoll kicked a 35-yard field goal with 1:07 left in the first half. Kingsville opened the third quarter with a 16-play drive that Stoll capped with a 29-yard field goal and upped the Javelina advantage to 13-6. Stoll’s third field goal of the game, with 14:57 left in the fourth quarter, gave his team a 16-6 advantage. But on the first play of the ensuing drive, ACU wide receiver Darrell Cantu-Harkless ran 65 yards for a TD to pull his team to 16-13. Stoll missed a 29-yard field goal on Kingsville’s next possession, and the Wildcats took over. ACU could get no closer than the Javelina 33-yard line on its drive, and Morgan Lineberry’s 51-yard field goal attempt missed with 7:05 remaining. ACU’s last-chance drive began after being pinned on its 6-yard line by Javelina punter Angel Millan. But on a fourth-down-and-7, Kingsville’s defense rose to the occasion again, sacking Gale on his own 12 with 1:11 remaining. Harkless was the Wildcats’ leading rusher with 70 yards, and top receiver with four catches for 36 yards. The Wildcats play rival Tarleton State next Saturday at 4 p.m. in the second annual Lone Star Football Festival in Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.
