This Thursday, the Warriors will play the other conference school to advance to the NCAA playoffs last year in Saginaw Valley. The Cardinals lost in overtime at Minnesota-Duluth in the opening round of the NCAA post-season, while Wayne State won at UMD in the Super Region #3 championship game on its way to a berth in the national championship game. The road team has won the last three meetings in this series. Three of the last four meetings have been decided by eight points or less, with Wayne State’s 41-27 victory at SVSU on Oct. 30, 2010, the only non one-score contest recently. Thursday’s contest will be WSU’s first non-Saturday game since August 29, 2002, at Northern Iowa, as well as Wayne State’s ninth road game in the last 11 matches.
HILLSDALE RECAP The 19th-ranked Wayne State University football squad extended its winning streak to four games with a 24-21 home field triumph over No. 28 Hillsdale College last Saturday afternoon at Adams Field. It was WSU’s eighth victory in its last 10 games dating back to last year’s post-season run by the “Road Warriors.” The Warriors raced out to a 17-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of the contest and never led by fewer than three points the rest of the way. Wayne State went 76 yards in eight plays on the opening drive with quarterback Mickey Mohner recording his first rushing touchdown of the season and just his third career scampering two yards for a score on a second-and-goal. The big play of the drive was a 46-yard completion from Mohner to James Jackson giving WSU a first-and-goal. Hillsdale drove 59 yards on the ensuing drive, but Gerren DuHart intercepted a third down pass by Charger senior quarterback Anthony Mifsud returning it 82 yards for the 10th longest interception return in school history. DuHart’s touchdown plus Stefan Terleckyj’s second PAT in the first eight minutes of the game gave the Warriors a 14-0 lead. The next three drives of the game ended in punts before Wayne State began a drive at its own 24. On WSU’s first play from scrimmage of the second quarter Desmond Martin went 73 yards down the right side setting up a first-and-goal. Three plays were not able to generate any positive yardage, but Terleckyj connected on a 25-yard field goal to become the all-time scoring kicker in Warrior history passing David Chudzinski (2005-08), who tallied 206 points. WSU’s next drive ended as the Charger defense stopped a fourth-and-one from the Hillsdale 31. The HC offense went 69 yards in seven plays with Mifsud scoring on a 27-yard run on a third-and-five play. The Warriors responded with an 11-play drive, but Toney Davis mishandled a first down handoff in the red zone with Charger Joe Synder recovering at his own 15. Hillsdale pulled within three points (17-14) with an 85-yard scoring drive garnering four first downs on six plays with Mifsud finding Brett Miller in the back of the end zone for a 33-yard scoring pass in the final minute of the first half. Sean Baligian and WSU Athletics Hall of Famer Joe Gough will call the action of Warrior football every Saturday, while Lisa Seymour will serve as the sideline reporter live on WTDK 1400 AM. 2012 GAME RELEASE NO. 6 On HC’s second play of the third quarter a bad snap in a shotgun formation was recovered by Andrew Matt, who returned the ball an additional three yards to the Charger 12. Davis had back-to-back carries going for seven yards on first down, and five yards and a touchdown on the second rushing attempt. Davis’ 38th career rushing touchdown snapped a tie with Ed Skowneski (1972-75) for second place on the WSU career chart. Hillsdale drove inside the Warrior 40 on the following drive, but a fake punt run by punter Matt Eltringham was stopped one yard short by Nick Thomas. The next three drive ended in punts, before HC started the final series of the third quarter at its own 30. After the 11th play of the drive, the Chargers had a first-and-goal at the WSU seven. Fumbles on consecutive plays followed by an incompletion on third down led to a 27-yard field goal attempt by Colin McGreevy, which was blocked by Andrew Matt. The next three series ended in punts prior to Hillsdale driving 71 yards in 11 plays with Mifsud scrambling right and scoring from eight yards out with 5:05 remaining in the fourth quarter. HC converted one third down and one fourth down play on the drive. The Warrior offense was unable to garner a first down following the kickoff but Terleckyj drilled a 68-yard punt and even though it was a touchback, a holding on Hillsdale backed the Chargers up to their own 10 yard line. On HC’s third play from scrimmage, Mifsud was sacked by Steve O’Shell and Andrew Matt, with Nick Thomas recovering the fumble at the HC 26. Two running plays and a 10-yard completion from Mohner to Ethan Walsh forced the Chargers to use all their timeouts. WSU was unable to pick up a yard on fourth down giving Hillsdale the ball at its own 17 with 40 seconds left. A third down pass by Mifsud was intercepted by Andrew Matt, his first career interception.

HEAD COACH PAUL WINTERS Paul Winters is in his ninth season as the Wayne State University head football coach after guiding the winningest team in school history last year. He was honored for his efforts with the 2011 AFCA Division II National Coach of the Year award. His 2011 squad set the school record for overall wins (12), road wins (8), while winning four consecutive road playoff games to reach the national title contest. In addition, senior left tackle Joe Long was the recipient of the Gene Upshaw Award as the top lineman (both offensive and defensive) in Division II. Winters also became WSU’s all-time football wins leader when the Warriors recorded a double-overtime victory at Hillsdale on Oct. 22, 2011. The 2011 senior class compiled a 35-14 mark surpassing the previous wins mark of 30 by the 1978 class. In addition, 30 members of the 2011 squad received conference all-academic accolades.

NFL ALUMNI UPDATE Former WSU running back and 2009 Harlon Hill recipient Joique Bell made the Detroit Lions 53-man opening day roster following the final cuts on August 31. In Detroit’s week one win over St. Louis, he had a one-yard rushing touchdown, the first ever rushing touchdown in the NFL by a former WSU player. The last WSU player to score a TD in an NFL regular-season game was Dick Byas, who had a 30-yard fumble return vs. Seattle for the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 29, 1979. At San Francisco in week two, Bell had two receptions for 59 yards and also rushed for 14 yards. Joique had five carries for 23 yards at Tennessee, and also grabbed four passes for 44 yards vs. the Titans. In week four vs. the Vikings, Bell had a game-high 72 receiving yards on six catches. He also had one carry for two yards. Former Warrior linebacker Tristan Black (2005-08) is in his fourth professional season in the CFL, and third with his hometown Toronto Argonauts. He has 15 special teams tackles, while also recording four tackles as a back-up middle linebacker. COACHING LEADERS BY SEASONS: Name Joseph G. Gembis David Holmes Paul Winters Vernon K. GAME RECAP: Wayne State began its 2012 campaign with a 7-0 setback at Ashland University in the season opener for the fifth-ranked Warriors. AU took the opening kickoff across midfield before the WSU defense generated a three-yard tackle for loss on the first play - by Ed Viverette - then Serxho Guraleci grabbed the AU fullback for no gain on second down. A third down pass was incomplete forcing an Eagle punt which was downed at the Wayne State three yard line. After Toney Davis gained six yards on two carries, a third down pass by Mickey Mohner was intercepted and returned to the WSU seven yard line. On third-and-goal from the four, AU signal caller Taylor Housewright completed a swing pass to tailback Jordan McCune who found the end zone. Greg Gallaway’s PAT made it 7-0 for Ashland. Mohner was intercepted on the ensuing drive, but Gallaway’s 34-yard field goal attempt early in the second quarter was wide right. WSU punted on its next three possessions, while AU did the same on its two offensive series. With just over 90 seconds remaining in the first half, Zak Bielecki forced a fumble following a completed pass with Moe Davenport recovering for Wayne State. A 44-yard field goal attempt on the final play before intermission was wide left by WSU’s Stefan Terleckyj. The Warriors punted on their first drive of the third quarter, then stopped a fourth-down Ashland rush prior to an exchange of punts by each squad. Terleckyj’s 54-yard boot was downed at the AU one yard line. Following an AU punt, Wayne State drove 32 yards but Terleckyj’s field goal attempt hit the left upright. The Eagles answered with a 46-yard drive but Nores Fradi made a fourth-down tackle of a completed pass before the first down marker. WSU responded with a 12-play, 61-yard drive but Mohner’s fourth-down pass was incomplete in the end zone. Dominique Maybanks had two catches for first down on the drive, while Davis garnered an additional two first downs on runs. Ashland had a 16-play drive, but the Warrior defense again held on fourth down forcing an incompletion. Wayne State was unable to pick up a first down on either of its two remaining offensive series. Viverette led the Wayne State defense with 12 tackles plus had three quarterback hurries. Fradi totaled 10 tackles including WSU’s lone sack. Nick Thomas, playing his first game since October 2010, had eight tackles. Gerren DuHart contributed nine tackles and two pass break-ups. Ashland held a 278-162 edge in total offense but both squads struggled on third down (AU 4-15, WSU 3-13).

GAME RECAP: Wayne State scored touchdowns on four of its five first-half possessions in recording a 38-14 triumph at Malone University. It only took the Warriors 1:47 to strike first as Toney Davis rumbled in from seven yards out on the fourth play of a 70-yard touchdown drive. The big play was a 50yard pass completion from Mickey Mohner to Steve Conway on a second-and-one. The Pioneers went three-and-out on their first series with WSU beginning its second drive at its own 40. Wayne State drove 60 yards in 6:03 with Jessie Johnson scoring on a one-yard plunge on the 12th play of the drive. Trent Brodbeck had a 13-yard reception on the play preceeding the TD run. Malone drove into Warrior territory on the ensuing drive, but Steve O’Shell intercepted a third-down pass making a sliding pick for his first career interception, and WSU’s first of the season. Wayne State was unable to convert a fourth-down play on the next possession, and the Pioneers went 60 yards in seven plays to cut the Warrior lead to 14-7. Stefan Terleckyj connected on a 47-yard field goal attempt but Malone was offsides on the play giving the Warriors a first down. Four plays later James Jackson hauled in a 16-yard scoring toss from Mohner on a third-and-11. An 11-yard punt return by Jackson gave WSU the ball at Malone’s 38. On the third play, Jackson caught a pass in the back of the end zone on third-and-10 for a 38-yard scoring play. Malone went three-and-out to start the second half. Wayne State put together a 10-play drive which used 4:44 on the clock with Davis scoring on a one-yard run around the right end. The next three drives ended in punts, before Terleckyj connected on a 41-yard field goal pushing WSU’s lead to 38-7. Nick Thomas led the Warrior defense with seven tackles, including one-and-a-half for loss. Ed Viverette totaled six tackles (3-3) with O’Shell adding five stops including one for loss along with his interception. Dalton Binkowski led WSU with two tackles for loss. Mike Laamanen, in his first career start, also had five tackles (2-3). Jackson finished with 91 all-purpose yards (54 receiving, 26 kickoff return and 11 punt return) to finish one yard behind Davis for the team lead. The kickoff coverage team held MU to nine yards per return.
GAME RECAP: Wayne State rallied from an 18-point fourth quarter deficit for a dramatic 35-31 comeback win over Lake Erie College at Adams Field. It was WSU’s largest comeback victory since trailing 21-3 early in the third quarter against Ferris State on Sept. 28, 2002, in Big Rapids. The Warriors rattled off 33 consecutive second-half points for a 36-21 win against the Bulldogs. LEC’s Jordan Forbes blocked on punt on the game’s opening drive setting up a 15-yard scoring drive. Wayne State knotted the score with a four-play, 75yard drive culminating in one-yard Toney Davis touchdown run. Lake Erie regained the lead on a 40-yard Sam Marcotte field goal completing a 55-yard scoring drive. The next five drives of the game all ended in punts. The Storm increased their lead to 17-7 on a four-yard keeper by Patrick Nicely. Following Wayne State’s fifth punt of the first half, LEC went 86 yards in 10 plays with Anthony Bilal scoring late in the second stanza. On Lake Erie’s first possession of the second half, Nicely was sacked on third down by Nick Thomas with Zach Houghton recovering. Stefan Terleckyj connected on back-to-back field goal attempts making it a 24-13 contest. After the Storm drove 45 yards, Marcotte’s 43-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Houghton. Lake Erie capitalized on a WSU turnover with an 18-yard touchdown drive increasing its lead to 31-13. On Wayne State’s next possession, Mohner engineered a seven-play, 76-yard touchdown drive completing a 20-yard swing pass to Davis on third-and-11 for the score. During LEC’s ensuing drive, Nicely was sacked on third down by Ed Viverette with Houghton recovering his second fumble of the game. On WSU’s first play, Davis rambled 10 yards for a touchdown, which came with 8:43 remaining. Terleckyj’s PAT cut the Warrior deficit to three at 31-28. After a LEC punt, Wayne State had the ball at its seven-yard line with 4:02 remaining, when Mohner drove the Warriors 93 yards in nine plays picking up six first downs along the way for the game-winning touchdown.

GAME RECAP: Wayne State concluded the month of September with a 21-11 triumph at Northwood. The host Timberwolves took an early 3-0 lead driving 51 yards in 11 plays culminating in a 28-yard field goal by Alex Faust. The Warriors answered with a five-play, 75-yard drive to take a 7-3 lead on a three-yard touchdown run by Toney Davis. The big play of the drive was a 51-yard completion from Mickey Mohner to Dominique Maybanks. Northwood drove into the red zone on the ensuing drive but a field goal was wide right. Wayne State’s field goal attempt on the following drive was ruled wide as well. The hosts moved the ball down to the WSU eight yard line where Zach Houghton forced a fumble on first-and-goal. The next three drives ended in punts. NU had a second-and-eight from its own 27, when Gerren DuHart stepped in front of the intended receiver for his second career interception. On a third-and-11, Mohner found Steve Conway behind the NU secondary for a 33-yard scoring toss. It was Conway’s first TD reception as a Warrior. After a WSU punt to start the second half, Northwood drove inside the Warrior 10 but lost six yards on a bad pitch on first down. On second down, Nores Fradi sacked NU quarterback Aaron Shavers forcing a fumble which he also recovered. Wayne State engineered a 13-play drive which used 6:08 on the clock and covered 74 yards ending in an 11-yard touchdown scamper by Davis. With the TD run, Davis moved into second place on the career WSU points chart (234 ahead of Pierre Brown’s 230, 1998-2001). Stefan Terleckyj’s third PAT of the contest put WSU ahead 21-3 with 2:24 left in the third quarter. After each team punted, Northwood went 74 yards in nine plays with Shavers completing an 11-yard TD pass to Carrington Thompson in the back of the end zone. Shavers then found Tim Zabawa for the two-point conversion cutting WSU’s advantage to 21-11 with 8:00 remaining in the fourth quarter. WSU garnered three first downs and used over five minutes on the clock before being forced to punt. Shavers threw incompletions on the first three plays then was sacked on fourth down. WSU tried to run out the clock but a fumble at the Northwood four with 1:24 left gave the hosts the ball. The Timberwolves picked up two first downs, but two straight incompletions, a run for no yards preceded a sack on fourth down by Moe Davenport. Ed Viverette had a game-high 14 tackles including two for loss.

GAME RECAP: Wayne State extended its winning streak to four games with a 24-21 triumph over Hillsdale. The Warriors raced out to a 17-0 lead in the first 18 minutes of the contest and never led by fewer than three points the rest of the way. Wayne State went 76 yards in eight plays on the opening drive with Mickey Mohner recording his first rushing touchdown of the season and just his third career scampering two yards for a score on a second-and-goal. The big play of the drive was a 46-yard completion from Mohner to James Jackson giving WSU a first-and-goal. Hillsdale drove 59 yards on the ensuing drive, but Gerren DuHart intercepted a third down pass by Anthony Mifsud returning it 82 yards for the 10th longest interception return in school history. After a trio of punts, Wayne State began a drive at its own 24. On WSU’s first play from scrimmage of the second quarter Desmond Martin went 73 yards down the right side setting up a firstand-goal. Three plays were not able to generate any positive yardage, but Stefan Terleckyj connected on a 25-yard field goal to become the all-time scoring kicker in Warrior history. WSU’s next drive ended as the Charger defense stopped a fourth-and-one from the Hillsdale 31. The HC offense went 69 yards in seven plays with Mifsud scoring on a 27-yard run on a third-and-five play. The Warriors responded with an 11play drive, but Toney Davis mishandled a first down handoff in the red zone with Charger Joe Synder recovering at his own 15. Hillsdale pulled within three points (17-14) with an 85-yard scoring drive garnering four first downs on six plays with Mifsud finding Brett Miller in the back of the end zone for a 33-yard scoring pass. On HC’s second play of the third quarter a bad snap was recovered by Andrew Matt. Davis had back-to-back carries to record his 38th career rushing touchdown moving him into second place on the WSU career chart. Hillsdale drove inside the Warrior 40 on the following drive, but a fake punt run by Matt Eltringham was stopped one yard short by Nick Thomas. HC started the final series of the third quarter at its own 30. After the 11th play of the drive, the Chargers had a first-and-goal at the WSU seven. Fumbles on consecutive plays followed by an incompletion on third down led to a 27-yard field goal attempt by Colin McGreevy, which was blocked by Andrew Matt.
