VINTAGE COMMENTS Most producers, growers, and wine critics agree that 2012 was one of the best California vintages in decades. A near perfect flowering and fruit-set in the spring, with a moderate to warm summer that was free of rain and mildew, contributed to stellar growing conditions. This pattern continued all the way through harvest. The quality of the juice was stunning, but the unexpected prize was the additional tonnage beyond our early estimates.

WINEMAKING Nicole’s Vineyard, named after Judy Jordan’s daughter, produces a highly sought after Pinot Noir with its own distinctive personality. Grape clones in this warmer, 48-acre site include 2A and 115, with the winemaking team focusing on the 115 for this single-vineyard bottling. To highlight its unique terroir, they used a minimalist approach, designed to yield a wine that reflects, in both aroma and flavor, the location in which it was grown. To craft this wine, whole grape clusters were carefully hand-harvested at night, hand-sorted, de-stemmed, then gravity fed into three to10 ton fermenters for whole-berry fermentation. The wine was then aged in tight-grain French oak barrels, following a specific barrel regime that highlights the floral and savory notes found in fruit from this vineyard. Choosing the best wine lots, the winemaking team created the final blend in October 2013, then bottled in December for release the following fall.

TASTING NOTES BY WINEMAKER MELISSA STACKHOUSE Nicole’s Vineyard 2012 Pinot Noir offers gorgeous aromas of flowers, candied orange, black fruit and bittersweet chocolate. A myriad of flavors on the palate range from blackberry, black cherry and blueberry to bacon fat, black olives and menthol, all underscored by smooth tannins and solid acidity. Pair this wine with barbecue pork, roasted duck breast with cherry sauce, or a rich, ripe Camembert cheese.
