2013-2014 Highlights New Initiatives Violet parking has been added to the top parking lot in front of the HPER building. SAAC members spearheaded the idea of making more parking available to students on campus. It is only $45 for a year pass in Violet parking. Awards The awards handed out this year by SAAC included the winner of the competition board and SAAC’s annual WalMart Without a Peer Awards. This year, the baseball team won the competition board. Alaina Fairbanks – a member of the track and field team - was the female recipient of the Wal-Mart Without a Peer Award and – Kyle Downing – a track and field athlete - was the male recipient. SAAC also continued its Faculty Mentor Award initiative this year. We gave out a total of three awards: one at a volleyball game, a football game, and a basketball game. The recipients of this award were Mrs. Amy Townsend, Mrs. Mary Shively, and Dr. Kari Hess. Community Service The Student Athlete Advisory Committee solidified its dedication to the community this year through its many fundraising endeavors and annual Senior Prom. SAAC was excited to host its 8th annual Senior Prom, which was called the “Hootin Hornet Hoedown.” This year’s Senior Prom barn dance theme was a success. We had our best turn out yet and the seniors had a fabulous time. The student-athletes really enjoy interacting with our fans throughout the community. During the fall, the members of SAAC gathered team donations, as well as donations from the community to contribute to the MIAA Canned Food Drive. Numerous amounts of canned food were collected and donated to the Salvation Army and $900 was collected and donated to Abundant Harvest. A total of $2,297.65 was donated to the local Make-A-Wish foundation. In order to raise these funds, SAAC completed our annual goodie bags for student-athletes fundraiser. We raised about $775.20 for the Make-A-Wish foundation through this fundraiser alone. In the fall, we did a spare change drive at a football game that raised $406.18 for the Make-A-Wish foundation. SAAC also did a spare change drive during the spring semester at a basketball game. This fundraiser gathered $1,116.27 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. We also hosted our second Make-A-Wish kid on campus and will continue to host one every year to show people the impact that their donations can have on a child’s life. Athletes from various teams also participated in the third year of Hangin’ with a Hornet. This is a program that pairs athletes with local middle school students. The goal of this program is for the student-athletes to make a positive impact on the middle school students by being a positive role model and supporting the middle school students in their endeavors. Athletes Supporting Athletes At the beginning of the fall SAAC hosted a Newcomer’s Bash to welcome all incoming freshmen and transfer student-athletes. This year the theme was Minute-to-Win-it and athletes competed in games seen on the show. SAAC also promotes the idea of “Athlete Supporting Athletes” by encouraging our teams to support each other at athletic games and competitions.
