The college enrolls approximately 2,500 men and women of diverse ethnic, religious and social backgrounds, from across the United States and around the world. Augustana’s athletic teams have won more championships than any other school in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin. The Vikings own a total of 179 total team championships (139 men and 40 women) since the league began in 1946-47. Augustana is currently sixth in the nation in number of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) Academic All-Americans produced in all sports with 153 as of June, 2014. During the 1990’s the Vikings finished third, trailing only Nebraska and M.I.T. Home to a Phi Beta Kappa academic honor society chapter since 1949, Augustana grants baccalaureate degrees in more than 60 areas of study. Along with a competitive athletic environment, student-athletes can join one or several of the school’s 150 student organizations or take advantage of Augustana’s wide variety of opportunities for international study. Augustana has a student-faculty ratio of 11:1, and nearly 90 percent of the faculty hold the Ph.D. or the terminal degree in their field. The following mission statement guides Augustana’s liberal arts curriculum and student programs. Augustana College, rooted in the liberal arts and sciences and a Lutheran expression of the Christian faith, is committed to offering a challenging education that develops qualities of mind, spirit and body necessary for a rewarding life of leadership and service in a diverse and changing world.

2014 MEN’S SOCCER PROSPECTUS

After a 7-10-1 campaign in 2013 that ended on a positive note with victories in the final two matches the Augustana men’s soccer enters the 2014 season with high hopes. There will be 17 letter winners from a year ago on the Vikings’ roster and six returning starters.

“That will be a key,” said Joseph in response to questions about his team’s offensive productivity. “There is nothing wrong with our set-up. The key will be if we can maximize our opportunities in front of the goal. That is the end product and our finishing has to be better.”

Head coach Brenton Joseph’s team was 5-4-1 at one point last year before suffering a stretch of six consecutive losses, two of them in overtime, before ending the year with wins over Benedictine (3-0) and Millikin (1-0). The Benedictine win was especially gratifying because it came against a team that won the Northern Athletics Conference.

Junior Patrick Nelson (Jacksonville HS, Jacksonville, Ill.) will handle things up top and last year he scored three goals. Sophomore Michael Brazinski (Plainfield East HS, Plainfield, Ill.) added four goals and an assist last year and junior Anthony D’Angelo (Stevenson HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) will also be at the forward position.

“Talent-wise we have enough to be better than last year,” said Joseph, who is entering his eighth season as the head coach. “How we mature mentally will be a big factor. We have enough core leaders that want to have better success that can carry us, especially early in the season.”

The midfield will consist of seniors Nathan Kyes (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) and Danilo Panici (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.), junior Jonathan Colucci (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.) and sophomores Danny Campagna (Glenbard North HS, Carol Stream, Ill.), Raul Bhatia (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Dominick Sullivan (Plainfield East HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.). Colucci tied for the team lead in assists last year with four while Kyes added two assists. Sullivan scored a pair of goals while Bhatia contributed one goal and Campagna had one assist.

The Vikings played well on defense in 2013, allowing just 26 goals in 18 games and had a team goals-against-average of 1.38. However, the offense will get some attention after scoring just 25 times last year.

Junior Erik Gustafson (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) was the team’s Most Valuable Player a year ago and he is back to lead the defense. Senior Adam Bengfort (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa), juniors Ian Deggendorf (St. James Academy, Olathe, Kan.) and Cole Collins (Lisle HS, Lisle, Ill.) and sophomore Ryan Curry (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) will make the defense formidable.

These goals and ideals also are reflected in the mission statement of the athletic department: The Department of Athletics offers all Augustana College students an opportunity toward the development of the total person. Working in a cooperative and active learning environment and dedicated to imparting a lifelong awareness of health and wellness our department assists students in the acquisition of dynamic skills knowledge and fitness.

Senior Brett Johnson (Zion-Benton HS, Beach Park, Ill.) has split time in goal each of the last two years but should have the job to himself this year. He played in 10 matches a year ago and logged 860 minutes while giving up 12 goals and had a goals-against-average of 1.26. Joseph thinks freshmen Aaron Jones (Woodstock North HS, Wonder Lake, Ill.), Grant Bracken (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) and Benjamin Border (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) could all make an impact. Jones is a forward while Bracken and Border are midfielders.

We value dignity, respect, diversity, accountability, communication and teamwork: and challenge each participant to achieve a sense of self confidence, pride, team unity, success, and cohesiveness through competitive sport. Our programs support the mission of Augustana College by cultivating the individual in all facets of life within and without the competitive arena.

“We had a good summer trip to Trinidad and that helped us in terms of team bonding,” said Joseph. “The off-season work was very good as well. We are looking forward to this season.”

Junior defender Erik Gustafson was named the MVP and Best Defensive Player for the Vikings last year. He was part of a defense that allowed 1.38 goals per game, including five shutouts. 2014 MEN’S SOCCER - 1

HEAD COACH BRENTON JOSEPH Brenton Joseph became the seventh head coach in men’s soccer history at Augustana when he accepted the position in June of 2007. In the 2013 season, Joseph led the Vikings to an overall record of 7-10-1, finishing eighth in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin with a record of 1-6. His 2011 season was marked by the highest win total for the Vikings since 2003, as the team finished with an overall 13-6-0 record and a 3-4 mark in the CCIW. His career record at Augustana stands at 54-62-13 and his teams have been 16-28-5 in the CCIW, qualifying for two conference tournaments in the last five seasons.

II national tournament. He is a 1993 graduate of Alabama A & M with a bachelor of science degree in computer science. He has extensive coaching experience at both the Olympic Development Program (ODP) and club level in the Chicago area. He has coached the Ajax FX Chicago Soccer Club since 1999. He was a standout athlete in college, earning third team NCAA All-America honors at Alabama A & M when he helped lead his team to an 18-2 record. He was the team’s leader in assists for three years and was a second team CoSIDA Academic All-American. He was also part of an ESPN feature on outstanding minority athletes at the collegiate level. He played one year at Mercer Community College and was part of a team that was ranked number one in the nation and won a regional championship. Joseph played professional soccer for the Chattanooga Express and was a member of the junior national team for his native country of Trinidad and Tobago.

Joseph joined the Augustana staff after a 10 year run at Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois where he held head coaching spots with both the men’s and women’s programs. He replaced Scott Mejia, who compiled a 68-37-6 record in a six year stint with the Vikings that began in 2001. Mejia, who was the head coach for both the men and women, remains the coach of the women’s program. Joseph joined the Benedictine staff in 1997 and served as both the men’s and women’s head coach from 1997 through 2001. He became solely the women’s head coach in 2002 and served in that capacity until 2004 when he took over the reigns of the men’s team, beginning with the 2005 season. The men’s team had second place finishes in the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference in 1999 and 2000 and in 2005 made it to the championship game of the conference tournament. His women’s teams compiled a record of 50-92-5 during his eight years at the helm and his 2000 team’s 14-5 record is the best in school history. Benedictine had a 9.5 game turnaround from the 1999 season and that was the greatest improvement in NCAA Division III women’s soccer that season and still ranks as the fourth best improvement all-time in the division. In 2003 he guided the Eagles’ women to runner-up finishes in both the regular season and conference tournament as they went 12-7-2 overall and 3-0-2 in conference play.

The season opened with a match at Wheaton’s Bob Baptista Invitational. Augustana led 2-0 late in the contest, but Taylor scored twice in the final seven minutes to salvage a 2-2 tie. The Vikings retuned home for three straight matches at Thorson-Lucken Field. They were impressive in wins over Macalester (4-1) and Grinnell (3-0), but couldn’t finish off the trifecta, falling 2-1 to Central in overtime. Junior goalkeeper Brett Johnson (Zion Benton HS, Beach Park, Ill.) was named the CCIW’s Defensive Player of the Week on September 10, after posting a shutout against Grinnell. Halter had a goal and a pair of assist versus the Pioneers. Over the weekend of September 21-22, the Augustana side split a pair of matches in St. Louis, Missouri. The Vikings fell to Webster 1-0 on a goal in the 80th minute, but bounced back the next day to defeat Fontbonne 2-1. Senior Fridolin Wernick (Evangelic Gymnasium Hermannswerder, Potsdam, Germany) provided the game winner against the Griffins with his second goal in three games since joining the team. On September 27, the Vikings traveled to Whitewater, Wisconsin to face the 12thranked Warhawks of UW-Whitewater. A Halter goal with 16 seconds left off an assist from Gustafson tied the match at 1-1. However, after a scoreless first overtime period, UWW got the game winner in the second, with the Vikings just over a minute away from achieving a tie. Augustana sandwiched wins over St. Ambrose and Simpson around a loss in its CCIW opener at North Park. Halter scored both goals in a 2-0 home win over the Bees. After Joseph’s crew fell 2-0 at North Park, it returned to Thorson-Lucken handed the Storm just its second loss in 12 matches. The Vikings dropped their next six matches, including five in conference play. The lone non-conference contest was against undefeated and sixth-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Once again, Augustana took a ranked opponent to double overtime, but fell 2-1 at home on a goal with just three minutes remaining. Wernick had a goal and an assist as the Vikings snapped their losing streak with a 3-0 win over Benedictine at Thorson-Lucken and the team wrapped up the season with a 1-0 win over Millikin on Senior Day. Johnson posted shutouts in each of the final two matches. Halter, who had the game winner against Millikin, finished the season as the team’s leading scorer with six goals and two assists for 14 points. Freshman Michael Brazinski (Plainfield East HS, Plainfield, Ill.) was the second leading scorer with four goals and one assist for nine points. Senior Matt Shipon (South Elgin HS, Elgin, Ill.) led the Vikings in assists with five and also had two goals for nine points. Colucci finished second on the team with three assists. In goal, Joseph used Johnson and senior Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa). Johnson finished 4-5-1 with a 1.26 goals against average and a .745 save percentage and Cowherd ended up 3-5-0 with a .720 save percentage and a GAA of 1.51. In addition to Gustafson, top Viking defenders this season included seniors Michael Buric (Notre Dame Prep, Scottsdale, Ariz.), Evan Johnson (Glenbard South, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) and Kyle Polanco (Lincoln-Way North, Frankfort, Ill.) as well as freshman Michael Curry (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.).

THE COLLEGE CONFERENCE OF ILLINOIS & WISCONSIN Now in its 69th year, the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) enjoys a reputation as the “Best Small-College Conference in the Nation.” The league was formed with nine charter members (Augustana, Carthage, Elmhurst, Illinois College, Illinois Wesleyan, Lake Forest, Millikin, North Central and Wheaton) on April 26, 1946 in Jacksonville, Illinois. Competition opened in the 1946-47 academic year as the College Conference of Illinois. Carthage left the conference in 1952 but returned in 1961. In 1967 the name was changed to the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin to recognize Carthage, which had moved to Kenosha, Wisconsin from Carthage, Illinois in 1962, and Carroll, which entered the league in 1955. As is often the case with athletic conferences, CCIW membership has experienced some changes since the league’s inception. After Carthage left in 1952, Illinois College withdrew the following year. Elmhurst and Wheaton left following the 1959-60 academic year. Wheaton rejoined for all sports but football in 1967 and then for football in 1970. Elmhurst rejoined in the fall of 1967 for all sports but football and for football in the 1968 season. Carroll joined officially with the 1955 spring sports seasons. Carthage returned in 1961 and North Park entered the following fall. Lake Forest dropped out at the end of the 1962-63 year. The last change in CCIW membership came following the 1991-92 season when Carroll withdrew. Now eight members strong, the CCIW continues its tradition of athletic and academic excellence. The league sanctioned women’s sports for the first time in the 1986-87 school year and Augustana participated in the first ever women’s competition. That was on September 14, 1986 when the Vikings met North Central in a volleyball match that was held at Elmhurst College. The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin sanctions 23 sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field, volleyball, wrestling and men’s and women’s lacrosse. Augustana owns more CCIW team championships than any other school in the league with 179 total. Of those 179, the men have won 139 and 40 belong to the women.

12 years ago the Vikings won their first ever CCIW title in men’s soccer. In addition to winning the conference championship in 2002, Augustana has recorded second place finishes in 1988, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1998, 1999 and 2003.
