2013 McWilliam’s Markview Shiraz Vineyard Region: South Eastern Australia Vintage Conditions: Warm and dry conditions of Spring 2012 flowed into the Summer of 2013, this long dry spell coupled with above average temperatures allowed for a disease free growing season and fruit was delivered to the winery in pristine condition. Average yields were seen across most varieties. And the quality of the fruit produced was in general above average. Shiraz was particularly strong with resulting wines showing true varietal expression and solid colours. Colour: Bright purple with red hues around the edges. Aroma: Dominate aromas of brown spice, white pepper and dark cherry that encouraged by smooth charred oak. Palate: The palate is medium bodied in tannin and body, with flavours of forest berries and plum showing through. The balance of the wine is matched with the soft tannins from the maturation in American Oak on the finish. Vinification and Maturation: The shiraz grapes were harvested in mid March at peak ripeness and were fermented on its skins in stainless steel fermenters over a period of 6 days to allow for full colour, flavour and tannin extraction. The must was then pressed off and racked into premium American oak to add richness and flavour during maturation and the added process of micro oxygenation to allow for softening of the tannins. Once maturation was completed after 10 months the selected parcels of Shiraz were blended for balance and flavour then it was fined and bottled. Alcohol: 13.5%
