MT Hosts First-Place Tulsa, Travels to ECU The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (14-8, 6-2 C-USA) squares off with firstplace Tulsa to open up a stretch of three matches in three cities over five days to begin the month of November. The Friday match is followed by the Blue Raiders’ first-ever meeting with East Carolina, on the road Sunday in Greenville, N.C., before MT travels up I-24 to face Austin Peay on Tuesday. MT went 1-1 last week, dropping a non-conference match to Louisville in three sets on Oct. 22 before downing Southern Miss in four sets on Friday. The Blue Raiders sit in the upper tier of the C-USA standings at 6-2, one of five teams in the conference with two or fewer losses. MT will face three of the four teams above them in the standings - Tulsa, Tulane and Marshall - over its final seven matches. Scouting the Tulsa Golden Hurricane Tulsa is the lone remaining undefeated team in Conference USA play, holding a 9-0 mark in conference play. Tulsa has won 12 straight dating back to Sept. 20, and has dropped just six sets through its first nine C-USA matches. The Golden Hurricane comes off a pair of wins at home last weekend against Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss. Scouting the East Carolina Pirates East Carolina enters the weekend just outside the top 12 for the Conference USA Championship, with the Pirates having dropped a match to Florida Atlantic on Sunday to give the Owls the head-to-head tiebreaker. The five-set loss to Florida Atlantic followed a four-set win on Friday vs. FIU. The Pirates will play at Southern Miss on Friday before their match against the Raiders. Speaking Statistically Through Sunday’s matches, the Blue Raiders are 66th in the nation in hitting percentage (.240), while redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson is 12th in the nation individually (.436) and 60th nationally in blocks per set (1.22). Both marks lead C-USA. Redshirt-junior Kendall Howard is ninth in Conference USA at 4.09 digs per set, while sophomore Shelby Anderton is fourth in CUSA in aces per set (0.31).

COACHING STAFF Conference Call The Blue Raiders have won four straight C-USA matches to move to 6-2 in conference play. The last time MT won more than four consecutive conference matches was in 2011, when the Raiders rattled off 14 straight victories in Sun Belt play. Full House MT had a season-high crowd of 931 at the match vs. Louisville (Oct. 22), the most for a regular-season game at AMG since Oct. 20, 2008 vs. Western Kentucky. The total attendance was the second-highest in a match hosted by a C-USA team this season, trailing the impressive total of 1,265 to attend Tulsa’s match at Charlotte on Oct. 18. Pure Michigan Redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson has turned up the heat entering C-USA play, hitting .474 through MT’s first seven conference matches while recording 1.33 blocks per set. On the year, Richardson is hitting .436 with 1.22 blocks per set.

The Best Is Yet To Come The Blue Raiders enter the weekend in fifth place in Conference USA with a record of 6-2. Of those four teams - Tulsa, UTSA, Tulane and Marshall - the only one MT has faced so far this season is UTSA, who the Raiders convincingly swept on Oct. 13 at AMG. Painting a Masterpiece Redshirt-junior Monet Marshall shattered her previous career best when she tallied 18 kills in a win over Charlotte (Oct. 20). Marshall’s biggest kill came in the fifth set, in the midst of a 4-0 run that turned a 13-11 deficit into a 15-13 victory to win the match. Ross Dials It Up Against Lady Techsters Sophomore Chelsea Ross had 19 kills in a three-set win at Louisiana Tech (Oct. 18), the most by a C-USA player in a three-set match so far in 2013. It’s a Great Day to be a Blue Raider Redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson was one of four Middle Tennessee student-athletes to win a Conference USA weekly award on Sept. 23, joining Tori Hawkins (women’s soccer offensive player of the week), Reggie Whatley (football offensive player of the week) and Dearco Nolan (football defensive player of the week.) Richardson Named C-USA Offensive Player of the Week Redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson was named Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 23 after recording a stellar .488 hitting percentage at the Mizzou Classic. Richardson hit .562 with 11 kills in a three-set victory over Southeast Missouri on Friday. She hit .500 with five kills in a three-set win over Towson Saturday afternoon before tallying eight kills and a .412 hitting percentage in a three-set loss to the host Tigers. In addition, Richardson posted 1.33 blocks per set on the weekend. Can’t You Dig It? The Blue Raiders have allowed a conference-best 10.40 digs per set, a mark more than two digs per set better than their nearest competitor (Tulane, 12.64). In C-USA matches, MT has allowed just 9.77 digs per set. Murfreesboro Blockade The Blue Raiders recorded 15 blocks in the win over Alabama A&M (Sept. 14) were the most since MT recorded 15 blocks against Miami on Sept. 15, 2012. The Bulldogs were held without a block, marking the first time since Sept. 12, 2008 vs. South Carolina State that MT held a team without a block. The 15 blocks are tied for the most by a C-USA team in a three-set match so far this season. No, No, No... Not In My House Redshirt-sophomore Tyler Richardson’s 10 blocks vs. Alabama A&M (Sept. 14) are the most by a C-USA player in a three-set match this season. Sophomore Rachel Shaughnessy’s 11 vs. Notre Dame (Aug. 31) are the second-most by a C-USA player in 2013. Chelsea, Lately Sophomore Chelsea Ross was named to the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn/University Plaza Invitational All-Tournament Team on Sept. 14 for her performances vs. Missouri State, Oklahoma and Alabama A&M. High Five City MT has an unblemished 5-0 record in five-set matches, with wins over San Francisco (Aug. 30), Southern Illinois (Sept. 3), Austin Peay (Sept. 7), North Dakota (Sept. 7) and Charlotte (Oct. 20).

C-USA Preseason Poll Announced MT received two first-place votes in the 2013 Conference USA preseason coaches’ poll. The Raiders were one of five schools among the 15 volleyball-sponsoring institutions to receive a first-place vote, and selected sixth overall. Rice was voted first overall after finishing second in the regular season a year ago and being ousted in the C-USA quarterfinals. Tulsa, the defending conference champion, was picked second. Ross the Boss Sophomore Chelsea Ross was named to the preseason All-Conference USA team following a solid freshman year. Ross was a second team All-Sun Belt selection as a freshman in 2012 after ranking third in the SBC in kills per set at 4.06. Block Party Sophomore Tyler Richardson enters her second year in Murfreesboro following a freshman season in which she ranked second in the Sun Belt in blocks per set with 1.23. Sophomore Sensations There are six sophomores on this year’s Raider squad. Out of those six, four played in every match in 2012: Shelby Anderton, Miri Shade, Tyler Richardson and Chelsea Ross, who played in all 123 sets. It Has a Nice Ring to It Junior transfer Eseta Maka joins the Blue Raiders after winning the NJCAA Division I championship with Southern Idaho in 2012. The 33-1 Golden Eagles swept the national championship over Western Nebraska. New Places With the move to Conference USA, the Raiders will visit a bevy of new locations in 2013. MT will play just two road matches on floors where they competed in 2012: former Sun Belt foe North Texas and in-state rival Austin Peay. Familiar Faces The Raiders were not alone in the move to Conference USA. North Texas, FIU and Florida Atlantic also made the move from the Sun Belt for the 2013 season. Current SBC school Western Kentucky will join C-USA in 2014. Next Up: Austin Peay The Blue Raiders play their final non-conference match of 2013 on Tuesday, Nov. 5, when MT travels to Clarksville, Tenn. for a 7:00 p.m. match at Austin Peay.

MATT PECK

Peck also helped Izabela Kozon, who is regarded as one of the best players in school history, take home a Sun Belt record-tying five SBC Player of the Week awards on the way to winning Sun Belt Player of the Year and Sun Belt Tournament Most Outstanding Player. She also garnered AVCA All-American Honorable Mention, marking the fifth consecutive season a Blue Raider has been so honored.

MT earned the outright Sun Belt regular season championship, also a first for the school, and took home the tournament title to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Louisville subregional. After knocking off host Louisville in five sets in the opener, the Blue Raiders earned a trip to the Sweet 16 with a 3-1 decision over ninth-ranked Hawaii to punch their ticket to the Penn State Regional in State College, Pa., where they ultimately fell to BYU.

Entering his 10th season at the helm of the Middle Tennessee volleyball program, Matt Peck has garnered a reputation as one of the best coaches in the region and has built the Blue Raiders into a perennial contender.

In fact, Middle Tennessee had two players earn All-American Honorable Mention as Second Team All-Sun Belt member Oyinlola Oladinni earned the recognition for the second consecutive season.

Joining Middle Tennessee after nine seasons of building North Alabama into a Division II powerhouse, Peck has experienced enormous success in Murfreesboro, leading Middle Tennessee to their most successful run in school history. The Blue Raiders have gone to six consecutive NCAA Tournaments and have won four Sun Belt Tournament Championships and two Sun Belt regular season titles.

Maria Szivos and Ashley N. Adams rounded out the individual accolades for the Blue Raiders in 2010, each earning a place on the All-Sun Belt First Team, giving Middle Tennessee four All-SBC performers for just the second time in school history.

Peck coached Ashley E. Adams to one of the best individual seasons in MT history, earning the program’s first ever Sun Belt Player of the Year honor to go along with her second consecutive SBC Tournament Most Outstanding Player award. The junior also grabbed her second straight All-American Honorable Mention accolade.

Head Coach

Peck’s mark on the program can be seen throughout the record books. The winningest coach in school history, Peck holds an overall 174-88 mark at Middle Tennessee. Since taking over in 2004, Peck has coached each of MT’s individual statistical leaders in kills (KeKe Deckard), assists (Leslie Clark) and digs (Alicia Lemau’u). Under Peck’s tutelage, a Blue Raider has been named to either the All-Sun Belt First or Second Team a remarkable 25 times, with nine going on to take home All-America Honorable Mention accolades from the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Peck has also coached four Sun Belt Tournament Most Outstanding Players, two Sun Belt Players of the Year and one Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year. Buoyed by the combination of the winningest senior class in school history and a number of impressive young players, Peck and the Blue Raiders turned in one of the most successful seasons in school history in 2010. Middle Tennessee posted a 15-1 conference mark en route to running up a 29-6 record and ending the season with an outright Sun Belt regular season championship and becoming the first conference team to win the tournament title on their home floor since 1999. Following the season, Peck earned his second Sun Belt Coach of the Year Award.

Peck guided the Blue Raiders to a conference tournament title in 2009. Led by the outstanding play of Sun Belt First Teamers Kozon and Clark and Sun Belt Tournament Most Outstanding Player Ashley Mead, Middle Tennessee ran up a 25-10 record and knocked off SBC regular season champion FIU in four sets in the title match, the only loss FIU suffered to a conference opponent all season. In addition to Kozon and Clark, Mead and Oladinni picked up Second Team honors, the latter of which was awarded All-American Honorable Mention by the AVCA. Janay Yancey and Clark were also named to the AllTournament squad. In 2008, Peck directed the Middle Tennessee volleyball squad to a new plateau, earning the school’s first-ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. After opening the season with nine consecutive victories, the Blue Raiders finished with a remarkable 27-8 record, winning a five-set thriller over Miami (Ohio) in the NCAAs before falling to host Purdue in similar fashion. Clark and Ashley Asberry keyed the Blue Raiders individually, earning both First Team All-Sun Belt First Team and AVCA All-American Honorable Mention honors. Kozon was named to the All-SBC Second Team. The 2007 season marked one of the best seasons by any Sun Belt team in any sport as the Blue Raiders posted a school record 35-3 record and made it to the Penn State Regional in the NCAA Tournament. Middle Tennessee opened up with a ten-match winning streak, and posted three double-digit win streaks over the course of the season, including setting a school record with 14 straight.

Aside from Adams, Asberry also took home All-American Honorable Mention and First Team All-Sun Belt honors. Clark rounded out the honors with placement on the First Team as well. Peck led the Blue Raiders to their first NCAA Tournament since 1995, taking home a share of the Sun Belt’s regular season title and winning the conference tournament. The Blue Raiders posted a 27-8 record and knocked off host Louisville in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to 18thranked Ohio State. Adams was recognized as an All-America Honorable Mention and became the first-ever Blue Raider to win the Sun Belt Tournament Most Outstanding Player award. She joined teammates Asberry and Quanshell Scott on the All-SBC First Team, marking the first time that three MT players had earned the honors in a single season. Scott and Jessica Robinson were named to the All-Tournament squad. Peck guided Middle Tennessee to the second most wins in program history in 2005, going 28-4 and making it to the Sun Belt title match for the first time in history. Under Peck’s direction, Lemau’u was named to the All-Sun Belt First Team and became the first Blue Raider to take home SBC Defensive Player of the Year honors. In just his first year at the helm of the MT volleyball program, Peck led Middle Tennessee to a 17-14 record and a 9-5 mark in Sun Belt play, marking the first time that the Blue Raiders posted a winning conference record since 1995. Under Peck’s guidance, Deckard and Dara McLean became the first All-Sun Belt First Team performers since the 2000 season.

Peck was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year, a first for the Middle Tennessee program.

Prior to coming to Murfreesboro, Peck established himself as one of the best coaches in Division II, leading the University of North Alabama to a national title in 2003 and earning National Coach of the Year honors. Peck developed a national powerhouse at UNA, compiling a 312-61 record over nine years, and leading the Lions to seven consecutive Gulf South Conference titles, eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances and advanced to the Elite Eight in each of his final four seasons. Peck earned GSC Coach of the Year four times, including a stretch of three consecutive from 1996-98. In 2010, the Gulf South Conference named Peck their Coach of the Decade. Peck also showed a knack for player development in his time in Florence, coaching an astounding 35 All-GSC selections, 24 All-Tournament performers and 12 AVCA All-Americans. Before joining North Alabama, Peck served as the head coach for seven seasons (1987-94) at Wayne State University. Peck led the Warriors to a 231-135 record, including NCAA Tournament trips in 1987 and 1994.
