2013 SEASON OUTLOOK
Pete Hennessy
2013 Season Outlook The Temple Owls are anxious to take the field for the 2013 season. After posting back‐ to‐back BIG EAST wins for a 2‐0 start in league play for the first time in school history, Tem‐ ple opens the season at perennial power‐ house Notre Dame on August 31 before a national television audience on NBC. Change seems to be the only constant for Temple football. The Owls, who finished the 2012 season at 4‐7 overall and 2‐5 in their re‐ turn to BIG EAST Conference play, welcome a new head coach this season, their third in four years. Head coach Matt Rhule is no stranger to Temple. The former Owls’ assistant coach for six seasons returned to take the reins after eight months in the NFL coaching ranks. He is disciplined, determined, and vested. He is truly Temple Made. His staff is young and en‐ ergetic. While Temple football will be adjusting to a new coaching staff, the Owls have also shifted in conference affiliation. Temple is now a part of the newly created American Athletic Conference for all sports, a first in school history. But the Temple Owls pride themselves on overcoming adversity. In 2012, Temple 44
rewrote eight school records in its 63‐ 32 win at Army. TU finished sixth na‐ tionally in punting (40.76) behind senior Brandon McManus, the all‐ time Temple scoring leader. Taking the field this fall are 68 returning student‐ath‐ letes, including 45 let‐ terwinners and 14 starters. Joining the Owls are seven mid‐ year transfers, the freshman class, and members of the Local 215 (walk‐on) program. In February, Temple signed 23 student‐ath‐ letes to National Letters of Intent. Geographi‐ cally, all 23 signees came from within TU’s recruiting footprint. All but four live within 200 miles (or less) of cam‐ pus. Ten student‐

OFFENSE The Temple offense returns eight players to starting positions among the 27 lettermen. Under the direction of first‐year offensive co‐ ordinator Marcus Satterfield, TU will utilize a pro spread system. Expected to direct the offense is junior Connor Reilly, who moved up the depth chart in the spring. Reilly, Temple’s only male two‐ sport athlete (he also plays baseball), saw ac‐ tion in all 11 games last fall as the holder on special teams. His impressive performance in the spring and his adjustment to the new of‐ fense make him the one to beat for the start‐ ing nod. Two‐year starter Chris Coyer moved to halfback during spring drills (see below). The Owls’ other returning starter is Clin‐ ton “Juice” Granger. In two starts last fall, Granger was 31‐of‐55 for 370 yards and two touchdowns. He rushed for 206 yards and a touchdown on 42 car‐ ries. Additionally, Satter‐ field will guide soph‐ omore Chad McCloskey, red‐ shirt freshman Thomas Rumer, and freshman P.J. Walker. McCloskey and Rumer have not seen game action yet. In his first season, coach Allen Mogridge will develop a youthful offensive line. Re‐ turning four starters, seniors Sean Boyle, Evan Regas, Scott Ro‐ orda, and Jeff Whit‐ tingham will lead the pack. Returning for a sixth season (med‐ ical redshirt), Boyle started the first seven games at cen‐ ter before suffer‐ ing an injury. Sopho‐ more Kyle Friend fin‐ ished out the

season, starting the last four games with 11 appearances overall. Sophomore Jacob Quinn is expected to provide depth. At left tackle, senior Cody Booth took over duties during spring drills after three sea‐ sons at tight end. Booth started all 11 games last fall, finishing second in receiving overall (and top tight end) with 137 yards and four touchdowns on 17 receptions. Junior Adam Metz is expected to provide support. Senior Scott Roorda will be the veteran up front, leading the Owls at left guard. Seeing action in 11 contests a year ago, he started the last four games. Redshirt freshman Brendan McGowan will battle for the position. At right guard, true freshman Dion Dawkins and sophomore Will Rathbone will compete for a starting role. Expected to take over at right tackle is sophomore Zach Hooks, filling the vacancy left by graduating All‐BIG EAST honoree Martin Wal‐ lace. He started all 11 games as a redshirt freshman last fall. Sophomore Ray‐ mond Korang will vie for playing time. Other lineman e x ‐

Returning to the sidelines after two sea‐ sons in the front office is tight ends coach Ed Foley. Seniors Alex Jackson and Chris Parthe‐ more are expected to compete for the start‐

ing nod. Jackson saw action in each game with four starts. He had nine receptions for 99 yards. Parthemore saw limited action in three contests. Adding depth are junior Wanemi Omuso and sophomore Romond Deloatch. Senior Chris Coyer, the Offensive MVP of the 2011 New Mexico Bowl, moved from quarterback into a hybrid halfback/tight end slot. In nine starts, Coyer went 84‐of‐164 for 946 yards and eight touchdowns while rush‐ ing for 444 yards and two touchdowns last fall. Seventh‐year running backs coach Tyree Foreman has the biggest shoes to fill, replacing All‐Ameri‐ can Montel Harris and BIG EAST Specialist of the Year Matt Brown. The Owls will rely on the speed of junior K e n n y Harper and sopho‐ m o r e J a m i e Gilmore. Last fall, Harper had 65 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 carries. He was third in receiving with 13 re‐ ceptions for 129 yards and a touchdown. In seven g a m e s , Gilmore had 94 yards on 20 carries as a true freshman. Also competing for time will be soph‐ omore Hassan Dixon and redshirt freshman Avery Williams. True fresh‐ man John Rizzo is ex‐

pected to see action at fullback. First‐year wide receivers coach Terry Smith has a plethora of talent in his arsenal. Seniors Deon Miller and Ryan Alderman, and junior Jalen Fitzpatrick are expected to as‐ sume starting roles. After 11 games, Fitzpatrick was the Owls’ top receiver with 30 catches for 363 yards and two touchdowns last fall. Miller had seven re‐ ceptions for 101 yards, while Alderman had five catches for 51 yards. Several Owls will be lining up for playing time— junior Zack Bambary, sophomore Samuel Benjamin, sophomore John Christo‐ pher, redshirt freshman Nathan Hairston, sophomore Khalif Herbin, junior Brett Pierce, and redshirt freshman James Whitfield.
DEFENSE The Temple de‐ fense needs to re‐ load, losing four starters, including All‐BIG EAST honoree John Youboty. Under the guidance of first‐year defensive coordina‐ tor Phil Snow, the Owls re‐ turn 18 letterwin‐ ners, in‐ cluding six starters. First‐ year line coach Brandon Noble has to fill both end positions, vacated by graduating team captain Marcus Green and Youboty. Senior Sean Daniels, who played in 11 games with one start last season, re‐ turns. Junior Jaimen New‐ man, who played six games at right guard last fall, switches to defense for the first time since high school. Competing for starting nods

will be sophomores Brandon Chudnoff and Avery Ellis who both saw action last fall. Pro‐ viding depth are sophomore Shabaz Ahmed, redshirt freshman Bryan Osei, freshman Kiser Terry, and senior Dan Van Norton. At nose tackle, senior Levi Brown is expected to continue in his starting role. The two‐year starter saw action in all 11 games, racking up 27 tackles, 3.5 TFL, and two fum‐ ble recov‐ eries.
Abdul Smith
Sophomore Matt Ioanni‐ dis is expected to com‐ pete for playing time. At tackle, senior Kamal Johnson, sen‐ ior Shahid Paulhill, sophomore Hershey Walton, and true freshman Averee Robinson will battle for the starting nod. Linebacking coach Mike Siravo returns to Temple after six years. His unit re‐ turns all three starters. Freshman All‐American and BIG EAST Rookie of the Year Tyler Matakevich returns for his second season in the Cherry and White. The ECAC Defensive Rookie of the Year played in all 11 games, starting eight games last fall. One of just four true freshmen to earn a starting role for the Owls, Matakevich became the first freshman in school history to record 100 tackles. He led the Temple defense in his inaugural campaign with 101 tackles, including 67 solo stops, three TFL, three break‐ups, two fumble recoveries, and a forced fumble. Redshirt freshman Haason Reddick and junior Marc Tyson will provide depth.

Sophomore Nate D. Smith controls the middle. In 11 games last fall, he finished sec‐ ond in tackling with 75 tackles, including 51 solo stops, a team‐best 6.5 TFL, 3.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, two break‐ups, a fum‐ ble recovery, and a hurry. He had 30 tackles and two sacks last fall. Sophomore Rob Dvoracek and red‐ shirt freshman Michael Kalaman will provide depth. The cornerbacks, under the guidance of Francis Brown, are stacked with experience. Senior Zamel Johnson and junior Anthony Robey are expected to resume their starting roles. In nine starts last fall, Johnson racked up 23 tackles and four break‐ups. Robey, who started all 11 contests, had 41 tackles and a team‐best six break‐ups. Adding depth will be sophomore Tavon Young who saw action in 10 games as a true freshman. Looking for playing time will be sopho‐ more Ikeem Boyd, sophomore Will Hayes, and sophomore Brandon Shippen. Brown will have his hands full filling the roles vacated by FS Vaughn Carraway and SS Justin Gildea. Leading the pack will be senior Abdul Smith and junior Chris Hutton. Smith played in eight games with two starts. Hutton played in all 11 games last year with two
starts. He finished with 19 tackles and an in‐ terception. Competing for action will be junior Brian Burns, sophomore Michael Felton, redshirt freshman Stephaun Marshall, freshman Ji‐ haad Pretlow, redshirt freshman Dion Shaw, and redshirt freshman Nate L. Smith.
SPECIAL TEAMS Matt Rhule will look to replace four‐year placekicker and punter Brandon McManus. New to the Owls this spring is transfer Paul Layton, who earned his degree from Al‐ bany and will complete his eligibility at Temple this fall. The two‐time first‐team All‐Northeast Conference honoree averaged 41.0 yards per punt in his career. Also competing at placekicker are soph‐ omore Tyler Mayes, redshirt freshman Colby Perry, and true freshman Jim Cooper, Jr., who earned All‐America honors in high school.
