BEGINNING THE BOLYARD ERA: This season, the Eagles will look to improve upon their success from a season ago, while David Bolyard will take the reins for his first season at the helm of the program. Bolyard brings nine years of NCAA Division I coaching experience to his new position, seven of which he served as the associate head coach of EMU. A LOOK AT THE MSU OPEN: The open will consist of a freshman/sophomore division and an open division which will run simultaneously, starting at 9 a.m. Both divisions are limited to a maximum of 250 wrestlers. The tournament will be a double elimination event with no team scores. Fans can follow the action of the MSU Open with a live stream at FloWrestling.org or see the live brackets at TrackWrestling.com. LAST TIME IN EAST LANSING: Last year, then-redshirtsenior Phillip Joseph led the Eagles with a third-place finish in the 184 lb. weight class. The Lapeer, Mich. native won three matches en route to his top-three finish and was the only EMU grappler to place in the open division. In the freshman/sophomore division Shayne Wireman earned a third-place finish as he wrestled unattached in the 125 lb. weight class and Blake Caudill advanced to the quarterfinals in the same weight class. Other grapplers to place at last year’s MSU Open include: Austin Geerlings (third-place, 165 lbs.), Devan Marry (fourth-place, 165 lbs.), and Mitchell Malott (sixth-place, 157 lbs.).
SMITH PROMOTED TO FULL-TIME ASSISTANT: EMU assistant coach Luke Smith was promoted to full-time assistant after serving as a part-time assistant for the last three seasons under former Head Coach Derek DelPorto. During his span at EMU, Smith has helped coach 10 NCAA qualifiers, as well as a Mid-American Conference Championship runner-up. During the summer of 2013, he spent a weekend in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. for the 2013 National Wrestling Coaches Association Coaching Leadership Academy. At the academy, Smith was mentored by legendary coaches and members of the wrestling community. BOLYARD ADDS MATTINGLY TO STAFF: Head Coach David Bolyard announce the addition of Scott Mattingly as a part-time assistant coach for the 2014-15 campaign. Mattingly has spent the last five years as a student-athlete on the CMU wrestling squad, where he headlined the 149 lb. weight class in his senior season. The Uniontown, Ohio native was a four-time Mid-American Conference Tournament placer, including a runner-up finish in 2011. As a sophomore, Mattingly qualified for the NCAA Championships after grabbing a third-place finish at the MAC Championships in 2012. With the hiring of Mattingly, the EMU wrestling staff is complete with a trio of coaches who each wrestled for the Central Michigan wrestling team. A QUICK GLANCE AT THE 2014-15 CAMPAIGN: The Green and White will face four teams that placed in the top-25 of last year’s NCAA Championships: Northwestern University (ninth), the University of Missouri (14th), the University of Northern Iowa (15th), and Old Dominion University (23rd). EMU returns two of its four NCAA Championship qualifiers in redshirt-junior Vincent Pizzuto and redshirt-senior Brandon Zeerip, while returning six other grapplers who saw time in the starting positions at their respective weight classes during the 2013-14 season. A NEW LOOK FOR 2014-15: After the graduation of four starters from the 2013-14 campaign, Head Coach David Bolyard will need to revamp his starting lineup for the 2014-15 season. From the looks of the projected 10-man lineup for this season, the Eagles will have five new starters and will shuffle some of their grapplers around within the weight classes.
