The Fly-by: It’s a matchup of the cellar dwellers in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Both the Arizona Christian Firestorm and Biola Eagles have had less-succesful seasons than they had hoped for, but the each have a chance to start a turnaround this weekend. The last time these two teams met, ACU got the best of the series with two wins on Saturday following a Biola win in the Friday afternoon game. Those games were in Phoenix, while this weekend’s series is in La Mirada. Both teams enter this series coming off a very, very rough stretch that has left them floundering in the conference. The Eagles recently broke a 10-game losing streak, but have still won just one of their last 17 contests. ACU is not much better off as winners of just one of 10 games.

All Biola home games are streamed LIVE at http://client. stretchinternet.com/ client/biola.portal#. So if you can’t make it out, catch the team online.

2014 B iola B aseball Biola Eagles 2014 Overall Season Statistics 2014 Biola University Baseball Statistics Summary for Biola (as of Mar 27, 2014) (All games) Record: 9-30 Date Opponent

David McNeill has been one of Biola’s most consistent offensive weapons, and he has been a solid force in the field with a .994 fielding PCT.

Game Notes:

POWER OUTAGE Biola has had a rough go of it at the plate this season. This

is evidenced as just one player is hitting

.300 in the late stages of the season. The team has been unable to get above

many rallies going because of a lack of power and extra-base hits.

The Eagles

have been out-doubled by their opponents,

81-49, over the first 39 contests of the season. The deficit in the homerun category is even steeper, as Biola’s pitchers have given up 18 big flys and the Eagles’ bats have produced just four, the worst total in the Golden State Athletic Conference. If you couple that with the Eagles’ team ERA of 5.35, it is a recipe for a 30-loss season.

it has been even more rough for

Both teams are

currently in sixth place, seven games out of fifth.

Arizona Christian has played

two fewer conference contests to this point, and has a chance to win a few

Eagles, unless Biola can pull out a sweep this weekend. It is not the battle that Biola wanted to be in, or thought it would be in, but it is one that will keep the Eagles competitive extra games to pass the

cesful in at least one offensive category this season, and that is pinch hitting.

Biola is 8-for-21 when hitters come off the bench, good enough for a .381 batting average. Sage Poland has been the most used pinch-hitter (2-for-5) and he is batting .400 on the season. The Eagles hold their opponents to a .196 average off the bench. WHAT’S NEXT? Biola has just three Golden State Athletic Conference series remaining on the season slate. The Eagles get to face Concordia in their final road GSAC series and then draws Vanguard and San Diego Christian at home to finish the year. Biola took one of three from Concordia when they came to Eagles Diamond. Biola’s one win was the last game it won before losing 16-of-17.
