Katrina Etherington Senior Practice Development Officer, Rockingham District, Perth Western Australia
The Impetus • Child protection workers must apply the Signs of Safety Child Protection Practice Framework from the point of duty interaction to case closure. This includes cases relating to children in the CEO’s care (i.e. Looked After Children) and child centred family support (i.e. Child in Need cases). • ‘…child protection workers should develop a ‘Words and Pictures’ to explain to the child why the Department and Court decided the child could not live with their parents. Where this is undertaken the child protection worker must involved the parents and the child. • Safety plans must be written in clear and straightforward language that is understood by all children and adults involved in the safety network.

The Map as a Multi-Purpose Document! The Proposal to the Court
The Map as a Multi-Purpose Document! The Provisional Care Plans For example in the Safety dimension of the Care Plan we noted: • When Shakiya & Stevie were taken into care; • The Danger Statements as the reasons why; • The Safety Goals to highlight what we were working towards; • The fact that a Words & Pictures Explanation had been developed to inform these things to the children and the network; • The rules of the Safety Plan; and • How the plan was now to change the initial Protection Application to the Court from a Protection Order (Time Limited) to a Protection Order (Supervision) as outlined in the s.143 Proposal. • The majority of this was a ‘cut and paste’ exercise!
The Impact on Claire’s Practice…
It’s Not All Roses!
We anticipated and encountered hurdles along the way!
Believe it or not as well as being challenges these were opportunities! The issues raised more questions - which we asked and as a result we got more depth and refined the plan and …it’s a work in progress!
