(Vestavia Hills, Ala.) and then-sophomore Taylor Reed (El Dorado, Ark.). Howard (5-11, 194) has played in a total of six games before last season, took the majority of the snaps the remainder of the 2013 season. He finished the season 144 of 234 (61.5 percent) passing for 1,848 yards, with 18 touchdowns and just 4 interceptions. In his first career start at Lamar, Howard completed 26 of 40 passes for 281 yards and 3 TDs. He topped that with 403 passing yards and 4 TDs the next week in the blowout win over Stephen F. Austin. Howard threw for more than 4,000 yards with 37 touchdowns at Vestavia Hills HS. Reed, a 6-3, 215-pound transfer from the University of Arkansas, played in nine games with no starts, completing 30 of 37 passes for 315 yards, with 5 TDs and 0 interceptions. Reed redshirted at Arkansas in 2012 after starting nine games at Memphis in 2011. Reed completed 169 of 295 passes for 1,690 yards and 10 TDs at Memphis before an injury ended his season. He played in three state championship games at El Dorado, winning twice. Ironically, both quarterbacks are lefthanded and both played with their fathers as their high school head coaches. Reed played all but one series against Texas Tech three weeks ago, completing 20 of 34 passes for 149 yards. He also ran for 29 yards and a touchdown. Against UT Martin, he was 18 of 30 for 157 yards and a TD, and was the leading rusher with 66 yards on 10 carries. Howard played one series and led the Bears to their final touchdown at Tech, an 8-yard pass to Damien Watts that drew UCA within 42-35 with 2:57 to play. He came on an engineered a perfect two-minute drill last week, leading the Bears on a 13-play, 80-yard, game-winning drive, capped by a 14-yard TD pass to Courtney Whitehead. Howard threw five TD passes off the bench against Montana State.
CONFERENCE AFFILIATION:
The Bears have been members of the Southland Conference since they moved to Division I FCS in 2006. UCA’s record in SLC games is officially 33-16. The Bears also beat two SLC teams (Sam Houston & Stephen F. Austin) in their first year in the league when they did not play a full league schedule. UCA won the “unofficial” SLC title in 2008 and was co-champion in 2012.
KICKIN’ IT:
Senior placekicker Eddie Camara, from Cedar Hill, Texas, moved into fourth place in career scoring at UCA last season with 242 points. He is also third in career extra points (137) and field goals (35). Camara trails record-holder Curtis Burrow (1982-85) by just eight field goals. In between Burrow and Camara is Camara’s predecessor Eddie Carmona. Not only do the kickers have similar names and numbers but they are both left-footed kickers. Camara is just one away from tying the school record for extra points (138), held jointly by Justin Smith (1999-2002) and James Paul (2003,
05-07). Camara is also second in season extra points made with 53 in 2012. The record is 57 held by Paul (2005). Camara is also third and fourth (14 & 13) in season field goals made. The school record is 16. With Camara battling injuries throughout camp, junior Jace Denker ha done all the kicking so far this season, hitting 4 of 5 field goals and 6 of 7 PATs.
SERIES vs. OPPONENTS:
The Bears have a 44-23-1 overall record against its 12 opponents on the 2014 schedule entering the season. The most wins (9) have come against UT Martin, the opponent in Week 2. The Bears will be meeting three teams (Texas Tech, Montana State, Houston Baptist) for the first time in history this season.
PLAYERS OF THE WEEK:
UCA earned five SLC Player of the Week honors during the 2013 season, with Ryan Howard and Jatavious Wilson earning the award twice each. Wilson had a 93-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in UCA’s 58-7 season-opening victory over Incarnate Word to earn Special Teams Player of the Week. He scored three total touchdowns, including two on receptions of 29 and 36 yards. Wilson earned his second special teams award after setting a school record with 314 all-purpose yards, including an 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, against SFA. QB Ryan Howard was also that week’s SLC Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 403 yards and 4 TDs in UCA’s win over SFA. He earned his second award after the season-ending win over Sam Houston State, when he threw for 349 yards and 4 touchdowns. Senior DB Marcus Peters took home the defensive Player of the Week award after the SHSU game when he had two interceptions - including a 52-yard touchdown - and broke up four passes.
THE OFFENSE:
The Bears’ offense has been consistently prolific during their time in the Southland, averaging 3,154 passing yards and 25.2 touchdowns per season since joining the league, with a 3,000-yard passer in four of the past seven seasons and three different quarterbacks throwing for 30 or more TDs in a season during the last six years. Last year’s 3,979 passing yards were the second most in school history, trailing only the 4,421 yards in 2001. UCA’s total offense average over the same time frame is 4,787 yards per year. ACADEMIC PROGRESS RATE (APR)
CONWAY, Ark. _ The University of Central Arkansas football program earned the award for the top Academic Progress Rate (APR) score in the Southland Conference for the fourth consecutive year, it was announced by the Football Championship Subdivision Athletic Directors Association (FCS ADA). UCA’s football program had a four-year average of 949 and a yearly score of 916 for the 2012-13 school year. It was the fourth straight year that UCA topped the SLC. “Our football program has set the benchmark in our conference for four consecutive years,’ said Dr. Brad Teague, UCA’s director of athletics. “Having the top four-year average in the conference for four consecutive years is a tribute to our student-athletes and coaches. “It’s also amazing that our upcoming score for 2013-14 is on target to be our best single score yet. I am very pleased with the type of young men our coaches are bringing to UCA and the emphasis which is placed on academics here.’ The APR Award recognizes one institution at each of the 13 FCS conferences that has the highest APR score. In addition, the Association also recognizes one institution from each conference that has improved the most from the previous year. In all, 25 awards will be given this year. “Our Association is pleased to present these awards to spotlight one true mission of all FCS programs, embracing the academic progress of their studentathletes, who will become leaders off the field,’ said FCS ADA President Brian Hutchinson, director of athletics at Morehead State University. “We are happy to continue to recognize the FCS institutions and their football programs for continuing to reach exemplary APR scores.’

school history, trailing 2001 (6,536) and 2005 (6,122).
Jonathan Woodard (49 T/10.5 TFL/7SK). Returning safety Marvin Mitchell was UCA’s interceptions leader with 3. UCA was second in the SLC in rush defense, allowing just 150.4 yards and less than one touchdown on the ground per game.
PRESEASON ALL-SLC:
UCA had nine student-athletes selected to the preseason AllSouthland Conference football team by the coaches. The Bears were led by senior WR Dezmin Lewis and senior OL Cole Caruthers on the first-team offense. Junior DE Jonathan Woodard was also a first-team selection. Second-team selections were senior WR Damien Watts, senior OL C.J. Simon, senior PK Eddie Camara, senior NG T.J. Randall, juinor DB Dillion Winfrey and sophomore KR Jatavious Wilson.
ODDS & ENDS:
UCA senior WR Damien Watts was a high school basketball teammate of St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Michael Wacha at Pleasant Grove HS outside Texarkana, Texas.. UCA is now 5-4 in season openers since moving to NCAA FCS in 2006... UCA played its first BCS opponent (Ole Miss) to open the 2012 season, losing 49-27. UCA lost to Colorado (38-24) in Game 2 of the 2013 season. Texas Tech was UCA’s latest BCS opponent three weeks ago. The Bears will play at Oklahoma State next season and at Kansas State in 2016... One of the top QBs in UCA history, Nathan Brown, is in his first season at offensive coordinator for the Bears. He was quarterbacks coach for the past three seasons and also retains that title this year. Brown threw for 10,558 career yards and 100 touchdowns during his career (2005-08)... Because of the rash of injuries last season, UCA returns 19 players with starting experience and 54 lettermen.

The Bears have scored in 213 straight games, dating back to the 1995 season. UCA lost 19-0 at Delta State for their last shutout loss. The Bears have scored in 319 of their last 320 games, dating back to 1986.
RECEIVING CORPS:
UCA had 17 different players catch a pass last season, with six catching more than 30. Of the top 12, 11 pass catchers return this season. The only one missing is tight end Chase Dixon. Fourteen of the overall 17 are back in 2012, missing two others who are no longer with the team. UCA’s receivers caught 361 passes for 3,979 yards last season, an average of 331.6 per game. The top receiver was senior Dezmin Lewis with 50 catches for 721 yards and 7 touchdowns. No. 2 was running back Willie Matthews with 45 for 265. Lewis is on the College Sports Performance Awards Receivers Watch List.
